Cyride always gets me to where I need mostly on time! The bus drivers are almost always extremely friendly and even on a crowded bus try their best to not leave anyone behind. They are also incredibly understanding if you forget your bus pass. It's nice to be able to have accurate, up to date, descriptions of what time the bus will be arriving! I called Cyride because I needed the midnight express. The man hung up on me and did not call me back. Leaving me stranded in the middle of the night by myself. I would like to be compensated for their mental trauma caused by this experince. read more

Cy-Ride is amazing. Seriously. I can't say that I've ridden a ton of public buses, but I know that I've heard, from many, many people, that Cy-Ride is possibly the cleanest, most efficient bus system they've ever used. I've never heard anyone say anything to the contrary. Not once. Part of that is probably the fact that Ames is a college town. That means that we're mostly filled with college students using the transportation instead of lots of average people. Average town people can purchase tickets or pay per-ride, but as University students get to ride free with college ID, it leads to almost 95% college students for each ride. The bus drivers have never been anything but extremely nice. Even when they've had people saying abusive things to them or they've had to try and reduce a situation when someone's getting on the bus, they've always been nice. The driving has been fantastic too. I've never been particularly concerned that the bus is doing something dangerous, and I pay attention constantly. In the six or so years that I've been around here, I've never once heard of a Cy-Ride accident that caused any injuries. There've been times where a car has hit the Cy-Ride, but aside from getting jumbled around a bit, passengers have always been fine. It's a very safe method of transportation. With that in mind, it also can be a crowded method of transportation. If you go on any of the buses that lead you to be on campus right before a course is scheduled to begin, you'll find the bus to be cramped. Depending on where your stop is on the route, it may be standing room only. Later-day buses are a lot better than buses between 8:30 to 11. Evening buses, after 7, are almost always pretty abandoned. Once you get super-late-night, though, you have some people who are slightly tipsy riding the bus. I've never heard of anyone throwing up on the bus, though, so there's that. The routes are almost always on time - or within 3 minutes. I've never had any problems with buses driving past me while I'm waiting. Even if I'm sitting on a bench and waiting for another bus that drives the same route, the bus will stop and ask if I wanted on. I've heard horror stories about big-city buses being horrendous about this, so I'm really impressed. The bus system reaches a good part of the city too. There are a couple spots that might require doing a transfer somewhere on campus, but you can get to pretty much anywhere in town with the bus and a bit of walking. There are a couple spots it doesn't go to (the Airport, for example), but you can get around that by a longer walk. The places it doesn't go aren't standard places for students to go, so it does make sense that the bus wouldn't go there. The buses are always clean. I've never had an issue with even garbage being on the bus. I think I, once in thousands of times riding the bus, saw a candy wrapper on the ground. It's amazing how clean they keep the buses. They're relatively well heated/cooled as well. It's not always perfect, but it's enough to be comfortable enough on the way to where I'm going. For those that aren't aware, the Cy-Ride is funded both by the university and the city. Pretty much, I'm insanely impressed, and I'm sure whatever public bus system I take next is going to be absolutely horrible compared to Cy-Ride. I'm spoiled for life. read more
