I waited 6 weeks to get my first appointment, I was excited for a fellow person of color to help me with my skin. I waited 55 minutes in the room for the doctor to come in. I heard someone screaming outside the door asking how long I had been in the room. I open the door to leave and the doctor was right there. I was given no apology for the wait time nor greeted. He spent perhaps five minutes in the room with me gave me medication and took pictures of my face and told me to come back in four weeks. FIVE minutes. So much for the first time consult the person told me over the phone. As a fellow professional with billable hours I get it, I really do. But this is not the practice for you if you wanted comfortable friendly bedside matter. As a point of reference, the first time I saw my PCP I waited about 45 minutes. But she came in and told me that she can be winded and apologized for the wait. That I understand. And I felt more like a patient than a copay. read more

Sooooo, I can understand some of the other reviews; however for me my experiences haven't been as earth shattering as some of the other reviews. About 20+ years ago I was still suffering with terrible adult acne well into my thirties. A Co-worker pulled me aside and said I know a great Dermatologist and referred me to Dr. Soden Sr. I went to the office and was pleasantly surprised. The office was clean and modern and Dr. Soden was very pleasant and had a charming "bedside manner" He examined my skin and said "Okayyy, let's get you fixed up." I don't remember the medicine(s) but it was a wash and topical solution. I noticed changes within the first (30) days and by the time I returned for my (6-8) week re-evaluation I saw a significant improvement with my acne breakouts. And this was after years of chasing skin care remedies in multiple dermatologists offices within my city. To that end I can honestly say with treatment Dr. Soden Sr was able to finally help me feel good about my skin. I recently, returned because I've begin to suffer with hyperpigmentation and this time I was assigned to Dr. Soden Jr. Our first meeting was friendly and cordial. He evaluated me and gave me prescriptions for a compound and a topical foam and I saw great improvement in a relatively short time and I had no compliants regarding his service or persona. So, that the good.... here's the not so good. Like many other online posters I too feel that his staff can be a bit abrupt. And it does come across as being rude. I know that they are busy and have to multi-task, but my feeling is that a Receptionist signs on to be in the "people business" and as such they are duty bound to have a personable and professional demeanor. I don't always see that or feel that. And even when my interactions with the front desk personnel have been without issue, I've witnessed what could be called unprofessionalism directed towards others. it's not so much what they say and more of how they say it. As if a person asking repeated questions is bothersome, when by definition their job is to answer "repeated multiple questions" daily. So, I in a nutshell, Yes prescriptions can be pricey, and wait times can be extended. The Front Desk Staff could use a cycle or two of professionalism trainings (maybe more than two) but overall, I personally like Soderma Dermatology and have been satisfied with my treatment. read more

Andrew R. is right. Yelp really needs a Zero star or even minus stars, just for people like Dr. Soden. I was taken aback by these reviews when I first read them. My primary care MD wrote me a referral to this guy but I confirmed I could find my own doctor. Other doctors who took my insurance didn't have appointments for months, so I took a Dec. appointment but kept my appt. here so I could get an acute problem taken care of. I got lost on my way to the appt. and was 5 minutes late. The waiting room was packed. I asked how long they expected the wait time to be, and was told an hour. They had only been open 2 hours at that point. I would hate to think what it would be 2 hours later. After 55 minutes they took me back to an examining room. Then Dr. Soden walked in to retrieve his laptop, told me he'd be right in. I waited 20 minutes. Brief interview, got changed into gown for exam. Waited another 20 minutes. Came in, spent 5 minutes looking at the rash, says it needs a biopsy but he doesn't have time to do "surgery" today, wants me to come back. I get dressed and wait for final instructions. Wait another 20 minutes for those & prescription. They are insistent that I make a follow-up appointment. I stand there while the nurse? clerk? tries to find an appointment time on a Monday or Wednesday (only surgery days available) and can't find one in THIS YEAR that wouldn't involve the risk of a long wait in the waiting room. Finally, I curtly inform them that I have already made an appointment with another doctor, and that I'd have that office contact them for information. They receive this news with the urging that I schedule the followup with them. My advice is to treat this doctor's office like a clinic: if you have something acute, make an appointment here, make an appointment at any other dermatologist. And shame on the other dermatologists in this area for not having quicker appointments available or sanctioning Dr. Soden's awful scheduling practices. I think 2 hours for 5 minutes worth of interview, and under 5 minutes of cursory exam is not acceptable. If the biopsy seems more pressing (and I don't think it is, I think it's more a CYA action for them), then they should be able to do at the initial visit. That's been my experience with my other dermatologists. read more

I have visited three times and have never felt so unwelcome in a business establishment ( it is as though you are being a bother ). The front desk employees are just rude. I called to make an appointment while sitting in the office and they had me on hold for 11 minutes...I was watching them just putting calls on hold. Then when I had my appt ( about 45 minutes late) the doctor had staff talking in his ear through an earbud which made him stop mid sentence my visit to respond. Visit was rushed and then was told I would be called for a follow up. That call never came and I had to call back and again was immediately placed on hold...21 minutes. Plain awful. We are definitely looking at taking our business elsewhere. Definitely going to have my firm do the same with their referrals. read more

My experience was not like everyone else. I can agree that the wait time is horrendous. My first visit I waited for an hour, but my second visit I took the first appointment of the day and only waited 10 minutes. I had some weird rash called pityriasis and after my primary care told me it was eczema, I was referred to Dr. Soden (Senior). My first visit I went into the room, put on a gown. I has a rash on every part of my body which he photographed and told me he thought it was pityriasis, but he needed to do a skin biopsy to rule out Syphilis. He wasn't rude or anything like previous reviews mentioned, it was just that God awful wait time. My only other complaint is how quick he is to do a biopsy. MY skin shave biopsy resulted in a small hypertrophic scar, but I'll just deal with that because knowing him, he'll try to cut that off too. read more

First time I tried to call, the phone rang busy for an entire day. Second time I tried to call, receptionist rudely put me on hold for 7 minutes until I hung up. Third time, tried to call & was prompted to leave a voice message but the mailbox was full, tried to press ) & was given the run around before I was disconnected, Fourth time tried to call, greeting said office was at lunch, call back, Called at 3:43, office was closed. The time years ago that I actually got an apt, the office was staff was rude, slow and very unprofessional, while the phone rang off the hook in the background. & finally on another note: When you go to the FB page for information, it is inundated with post about Beauty Pageants. What this has to do with dermatology is beyond me & just kind of strange. Avoid this place AT ALL COST if you like good service. Just horrible. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Soden Jr for a couple of years. He is very knowledgeable & professional. I have maybe waited ten minutes max for the visit. Which I believe is fantastic since I have been in the medical field for a long time, I have certainly seen and experienced worse. I do like seeing the son at this practice because he is very informative and comes across very down to earth. He's also not bad on the eyes. But, my time is very valuable. I made a 7:30am appointment and he strolled in at 7:40am. I was not see until 8:00am and I was the first patient. I was a little confused. This has also not been the first time this has happened. Once the doctor actually comes in, the appointment is pretty speedy. I got shots for a few keloids. Less than 10 minutes total. Suggestion: work on time (which clearly seems to be in issue per reviews below) and you reviews will go up. Its a great practice minus the wait. read more

I've already posted a very lengthy review on Google. I want to say that it is time for Patients with Real Medical Neglect to start filing complaints with the Maryland Board of Physicians. Writing a review on Yelp or Google is helpful. Especially to inform New Patients of Wait Time in a Doctor's Office or Rudeness. But when it comes to Medical Neglect, then we need to send a clear message by filing a complaint with the Maryland Board of Physicians. If the complaint is valid, they are able to send a Confidential Advisory Letter to the Provider. Because as long as Dr. Soden or Dr. Soden Jr can see 3 stars or more in a review; they could care-less about the few 1 stars they have received. read more

I have learned to go in the morning for most doctors offices. Otherwise you pay for the patients that come in LATE and screw up the flow. Since I have done this I am in and out of there in an hour. Dr Soden Jr is considerate and discrete when you want it, and good at what he does. I recommend him, but go in the morning and things move faster. read more

Today I spent more than an hour there, basically just to vent and complain about my last visit with him when he forgot to write me the prescription medication that he said he would. Today was my third and final chance to give the Sr.guy after I was disappointed with his son's treatment the very first time. They both seriously have a lack of respect for others time. Each time, I got there at least 20 mins before the apt and always did the paper work ahead of time online, so I won't have to waste time AND each time I saw the doctor over 40-50 mins from scheduled time. I don't understand this as they rush you so much and hardly spend 5 mins with you before they leave you sitting alone in a room. Today he finally admitted that he had forgotten the prescription that he was suppose to and for the other medication, didn't specify its uses for another ailment that he assured me he will. I told him his front staff is very rude when I called twice, as they put you on hold then disconnect you and never bother to call you back because they know you have questions and want to speak to the doctor about your medication. They told me to make appointment for that too and even I visited in person with a bag of medication to show the doctor, they didn't bother to help, instead told me the same thing that doctor is very busy and won't be able to see me. So I suffered for almost 4 months and would never want to see him or his son again. I politely asked me to refund my $40 for todays' appointment as I don't want him to be my dermatologist as I have no wish to suffer most. One of the medication he gave for my bruised knuckles, made the problem much worse. Good Morning All, Unfortunately, my experience at this clinic was not that great. I am a Veteran, which is what attracted me to the clinic given that Dr. Soden, SR. is also a Veteran. In this regard, my skin condition is linked to my deployment to the Middle East. I paid a $45 copay for less than 10 minutes of service. Moreover, I was given samples of a medication that Dr. Soren, JR. prescribed to me and told that I would be contacted by a pharmacy regarding a full prescription, which would be shipped to me. Well, the pharmacy contacted me and said that my insurance didn't cover the prescription and the cost was over $10,000. The pharmacy instructed me to contact Dr. Soden, JR. to request another prescription. I did so, but I've yet to receive a call back or new prescription. I also sent a message through the clinic's website, but still no response. It's been about 2 months and I actually waited for a response, but I haven't received one. I finally made it to a VA facility for treatment, which I should've done in the first place. I'm done with non-VA physicians. Have a great day! read more

We made an appointment for a family member, when we arrived we provided them our insurance information. A short time later they stated that we had to pay a $91 deductible. I have had the same insurance for 28 years, yes 28 years, and I have NEVER had to pay a deductible. I asked them if they would still submit to my insurance and they said no. I called my insurance and confirmed that no payment was necessary to the doctor's office. Anyway, paid the $91 and sat in the waiting room for 30 more minutes, past my appointment time, and then was called back with my son. The doctor came in, looked at a bump on his back, said it was a wart, and suggested that we have it remove. I said ok, let's do it. The doctor then said, oh no, we can't do it today, you have to make another appointment. I asked, do I have to pay another deductible and he replied yes, and it will probably be more then this visit. I asked why we couldn't do the 10 minute procedure now and he didn't reply. Went to the receptionist desk to make the appointment, then left. After leaving I felt that the staff, including the doctor was unprofessional and the only reason I was told to come back is to have to pay more money. I cancelled the appointment (which has to be done within 48 hours of your appointment time or they charge you $100) and the woman on the phone became very rude when I wouldn't reschedule. Furthermore, she wouldn't give me her name so I can say who I could talk to if they charged me a cancellation fee. Worst medical establishment I have EVER been to! Do yourself a favor and find another dermatologist to go to! read more

From what I see staff at the front desk is trying to improve from rudeness and wait. I did like the visit. What i wound say is that I could tell the doctor was in a rush trying to get to the next client. I just had to voice all of my concerns, and he got through them. My main concern was hair loss, and i appreciate the options i have. Tech savy as well as the send email reminders your appointment. You also can fill out your paperwork online. If I could give zero or negative stars I would. I seriously cannot believe this guy is in business. Dr. Soden was the rudest, most condescending, unprofessional, callous, and indifferent to the needs, thoughts, feelings, and time of his patients. You could not pay me to go back to him. I walked out before we had finished because I could not believe how poorly he was treating me, and I certainly wasn't going to start any procedures that would require me to come back. I have sent a formal letter of complaint to my insurance company about this issue and have called my credit card company to stop payment on the co-pay, since we didn't complete the appointment due to his unprofessionalism and rudeness. I arrived on time for my appointment, but it was over an hour before the doctor actuall saw me. He saw me looking outside the room I was waiting in and said "I'll be with you shortly." I said, "Ok, 'cause my was for an hour ago." Then he replied, "Well, sometimes it takes longer." Fine, I get it, this wasn't the first time I'd been to a doctor who crammed patients in to make more money, thus making everyone wait longer. It's not my favorite thing, but I can deal with waiting. When he finally did get to me, he asked me why I was there (he didn't even glance at the form I had filled out explaining just that, he was in a hurry). I starting telling him about the first of my reasons, the skin around my eyes was very dry, as a remnant of severe allergy reactions I had had, that my allergist had helped heal. We had gone through a lot of steps with the allergist that would save time, test, and money with the dermatologist, but he didn't want to hear anything. I still was sure to explain everything so he would have the full picture, but he reaction was just, "well, was this doctor a dermatolgist, or just an allergist?" I understand that different specialists have different focuses, but they can still overlap in some areas, and he could at least have respectfully listened to what had happened to get all the information he could. He started rattling off all these new soaps and things I should do to my face, not even acknowledging the information I had provided or trying to explain how he was going to build on it and why that was necessary. I was quite uncomfortable by this point, but I could deal with it, since so far I just had to use different soaps in hopes of helping the skin around my eyes. Then he got up and was ready to rush to the next patient without checking to see if there were other reasons I was there. So I stopped him and had him look at some moles on my back. He had me strip and rotate, which I know is standard procedure, but his manner made me very uncomfortable, then told me to get dressed, then started writing, then had me strip and do the whole thing again. My guess is he was going so fast that he didn't even remember what he just saw to write on the form. He said that there were at least 3 moles that should come off as a precaution. Then he said that he won't take off more than 1 during a visit because "the lab can get confused." Now I'm no scientist, but the lab is receiving many different samples of all kinds of things for testing all the time. As long as you have the right barcode sticker on, there shouldn't be any more risk of confusing my samples with each other as confusing my samples with other peoples' samples. But, by having me come back 3 more times instead of doing them all today, or coming back just ones, he can charge me 3 more copays and charge my insurance for 3 full visits. When I said, "I'd rather have them taken off all at once to avoid having to come back 3 more times and paying the co-pay 3 more times," he said, "You will if you want them to be taken off here." Now I wish I could convey with typed words the feelings of uncomfortableness and humility that were only exacerbated by shock when he he went from just ignoring my thoughts to treating me like I was some lowly pion who was asking this great favor for him to treat me. This is when I picked up my things and said, "If you ever learn to treat your patients with respect and care, give me a call." I walked out of the exam room. I stopped to say goodbye and thankyou to the receptionist and to check out yelp.com in a few hours because Dr. Soden was the rudest, most inconsiderate, condescending doctor I had ever seen and would not be back. Dr. Soden had followed me out, and after I had said this to the receptionist, he said, "Good, we wouldn't want to have you anyway." Regardless of anything, it is completely inappropriate for a doctor to say something like that. I was completely shocked that such a person could be in business for so long and treat people so badly. This goes beyond clashing personalities or my expectations being too high, this guy was rude, inappropriate, and cared more about pushing more people through for the money than actually caring about his patients. Will NEVER return to this doctor. Had an appointment with Dr. Soden (Senior) to discuss having a small pimple-looking bump on my nose removed. Several months prior, he'd told me the bump was just cosmetic, nothing to worry about...that I could have it cut off if it bothered me. I waited for ***90*** minutes to see him. 30 mins late is one thing, but I literally was about to walk out the door before he finally walked in. (Mind you, I had thought I was there to discuss something cosmetic, so, had I left, who knows when I'd have gotten it looked at again!) Well, when he finally came into the room, he looked at it and quickly said "We need to cut it off and send to the lab to rule out skin cancer." I was shocked. When I mentioned our conversation during the last appointment and reminded him what he told me, he QUICKLY left the room (WITH his iPad that CONTAINS my electronic medical records) saying he "had to go check my records". Well, my records are right there in your hand, sir, are they not? I sat there for TEN more minutes, alone and terrified, not knowing how serious this could be. What doctor someone they may have cancer and then leaves them alone? When he returned, he insisted that we discussed two other things during my last appointment and tried to make it sound like we hadn't spoken about the spot on my nose. I know for a FACT that we did as it was the primary reason for my last visit. For all I know, he was in his office manipulating the notes to cover his you know what. As much as every part of me wanted to bolt out of that room, I also realized that the sooner I had the spot tested, the better, so I agreed to have him do the procedure and send it to the lab. (Knowing darn well, I was NEVER going back there.) He injected the spot on my nose with a numbing shot which started to spray into my sinus cavity and was running down my throat. When I told him that was happening (I was practically gagging on it), he said, "Oh no, that's not possible, I injected into bone, it can't be going down your throat." Um, YES, I think I know if there's something running down my nose into my throat, and side note, my throat was beginning to numb! After the shot, he LEFT ME ALONE again, saying, "This will take about ten minutes." Well, excuse me, but on the release form you JUST had me sign, it CLEARLY states that some people have adverse/allergic reactions to the anesthetic, so...not sure you want to leave people unattended when it could possibly KILL them. I was beyond irate by the time I was leaving. When I asked for my records of our last appointment, the lady at the desk called back to Dr. Soden and then told me the doctor said he would have to send them to me by mail or fax. Later that night, DR. SODEN himself left me a voicemail saying, "I understand that you want a copy of your medical records, I was thinking we should wait for the pathology report to come back, so I can send them all to you at once." Sounds extremely fishy to me. Like, let's wait and hopefully everything comes back ok, then she might not care about the records (or lack thereof). And how often does the doctor call you to tell you that vs. their receptionist??? It's like he was trying to be extra careful. I understand that things change. Perhaps the spot on my nose didn't concern him the first time, but did the second. I'm fine with that part. The way he tried to DENY that we'd even spoken about the problem before is what was COMPLETELY unacceptable. Maybe he's been sued before or something so he's paranoid. Either way, between that and the waiting, leaving me alone TWICE during the appointment, telling ME what I was/was not experiencing during the procedure, not giving me my records right away and everything else, I'm done. I don't care if it's convenient, I will find a new, more responsible dermatologist. Side note, the results (which he said would take 3-4 days to come in), came 2 days later and, again, the Dr. called to leave the results on my phone. (Thankfully, everything was fine.) A couple weeks later when I cancelled my follow up appointment, HE called and again left me a voicemail. Made no sense to me why the doctor would call me yet again. He was clearly worried that I was going to post a bad review (to match the many others I see here already) or something. I hope he reads these and learns a bit about how to treat people that are paying money and putting their trust and health in his hands. read more

I came in for laser hair removal, the wait time was awful then a nurse came in and gave me naming cream after which I waiter another 30mins for it to take. Dr Soden senior came in, barely looked at my face (he seemed in a hurry) then said they would charge me twice as much because I had more hair than he thought. I was shocked that after all the time I waited plus the naming all over he said 2x more or go get more money and come back. I said I am sorry I am a student this is all I have, he said he can do half the are and next time when I have more money he can do the whole thing!!!! I was shocked and accepter, I was so disappointed and upset. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!! If I caught him on a bad day he should've cancel and let his son takeover (his son also works there). Unbelievable! I was fine with Dr. Soden. The only thing that I agree with - is the long wait. However this certainly wasn't the first doctor's office I've been to that offers long waits. He was very respectful to me - we had a long conversation on my first visit. He took off the offending moles and when I experienced what I thought was unusual pain a few days later he offered to have me come in on a Saturday morning when he just happened to be in the office (not regular office hours). Turns out it had become infected and he gave me antibiotics.. He called my house that night (or a few days later - I forget - this was a few years ago), to make sure everything was getting better. The ladies in the office are pleasant and friendly although they do seem harried - not sure of their opinion of their boss! I've been going back once a year since then for annual check-ups. Once - when out to dinner with my husband, Dr. Soden and his wife spotted us in the restaurant and came over to say hello. Now - with all that said - my husband's regular doctor made an uncomfortable face when he mentioned that he was going to see Dr. S for a procedure, and she suggested he go to Hopkins instead. Since then my husband has become convinced that the procedures I received were perhaps not necessary, or at least in one case - botched - in the sense that I now have a big scar on my back. So - not sure who to believe. But I myself, have had a very positive experience. read more

I didn't know what to expect after reading the reviews but I had a wonderful experience. I had a 8am appointment as a new patient and was done with my appointment by 9:15 which included filling out new patient paperwork and a procedure that was added on last minute. I thought that the doctor was very kind to offer the procedure right then and there instead of making me schedule another appointment and come back. Compared to my previous dermatologist where I had to wait an hour and a half to be seen and rushed during the appointment I thought this was great. I did not feel rushed at all. I am very happy that a friend recommended Dr. Soden. I was able to get an appointment very quickly. Dr. Soden is compassionate and takes time with his patients. He is knowledgeable and up to date on current technology. The office opens early which is very convenient. I tend to make early appointments and find the time in the waiting room very short. This doctor does not rush through his patients but takes the time to provide the appropriate care. What a great experience. Of course going to any doctor's office can be a little nerve wracking however, Dr. Soden Jr. and his assistants, and even the check-in crew made my visit there quite nice. I went in to have a Squamous Cell removed. The check-in was quite fast and I did not have to wait more than five minutes to be seen. Dr. Soden Jr. was very informative and educational on the different types of skin cancers, and about what I had. Then he explained the process he would be performing. His bedside manor was wonderful, and made me feel quite comfortable. I would highly recommend Dr. Soden's office to anyone. I agree with the previous reviews. I have seen Dr. Soden, and he is a decent physician, however, his front desk staff is rude, unhelpful, and dismissive. The wait time to see the physician screams of double to triple booking as an office norm. I waited an hour and a half for my appointment, and needless to say, I have found another dermatologist in Olney, Maryland, that respects his patients time, the front desk staff is polite and friendly, and scheduling a follow up is not problematic. I would give this office a zero, but its not an option. Unfortunately, I would not recommend that anyone goes to this office! read more

Dr. Soden Sr. was recommended by a friend. I was able to get an appointment in a timely manner and that was important to me. The office staff was helpful and very kind. As the other reviewers said, there was a 35 minute wait before I was called into the office. Dr. Soden took his time with me and I certainly did not feel rushed.He answered all of my questions. In my case he suggested a biopsy and I felt that was an appropriate course of action. The procedure was scheduled and was done as planned. Several reviewers were critical of that, but I can not imagine doing a biopsy on the first appointment. I had a biopsy done and must admit I was a bit scared. Dr. Soden explained everything that he was doing in a calm, professional manner and reassured me and took away my fear. The follow up care was also fine. read more

I would like to say that I have had excellent experiences with Dr. Soden for the past 20 years. It all began when my 3 children (toddlers at that time, now in their twenties) had the same scalp condition that had gone untreated after visiting 2 other dermatologists. Topical creams were prescribed that really didn't treat the problem. The minute Dr. Soden examined my children, he knew exactly what the problem was and treated them with oral medication, and the condition never returned. Recently, I scheduled an appointment to have several moles on my face looked at for removal. I arrived 10-15 minutes ahead of schedule and waited less than 10 minutes in the waiting room. Dr. Soden recommended that I have the moles removed that were causing me problems and asked if I had time during my appointment to have the procedure performed within the same visit. I was surprised to get it all done in the same day, thinking that I would have to come back for another visit, I am very pleased with the service that I received from Dr. Soden and his office. This doctor is amazing. I recently had a treatment (filler) done for dark circles and puffiness beneath the eye and saw IMMEDIATE results. The process was nearly painless and left minimal bruising. I will be back for this (although not anytime soon as it is expected to last for several months) and other treatments. The staff was amazing and my appointment went quickly. Wow.. My experience was SOOO different from the others that posted! I was able to get an appointment the day I called. When I got there they took my information and I only waited maybe 10 minutes before Dr. Soden saw me. He came in and shook my hand and went over my issue with me. He made sure I understood what I was suffering from by showing me a skin diagram. We even talked about personal things (where I'm from, my commute to work, etc..) I am so happy I went here because I've been suffering with skin problems for years Dr. Soden prescribed something that finally seems like it's working for me!! He even gave me a coupon for $35 off my prescription! read more

I have been going to Soderma for the past few months. I got treated for mild acne and have been getting laser treatment done. Overall, the practice leaves a lot to be desired. The front desk staff are most often rude, dismissive, and generally unhelpful. I have only been seen by Soden Jr. He is decent as a doctor, but all staff wear a radio/earbud, and he will often pause mid-sentence while seeing you to talk to another staff member. I understand the need to communicate, but it's a dermatology practice-- not a trauma center. It's not like I feel starved for attention, but the regular stopping makes the visit seem disjointed and awkward. It's not the worst place ever, but don't have your hopes up for good "bedside" manner or courteous staff. read more
