And they told me to use a phone to call someone, and that someone forwarded me to their colleague, who is apparently a voicemail machine. The only better part about the second group is that they told me bixi doesn't exist anymore. Those were the highest rated places around. Well there was one more place nearby, so figured to give it a shot. Finally came here, and guess what? They .. rent bikes. $15 for 4 hrs. Very reasonable. Great bike, it was a Norco. Rode all around Mount Royal and it was a breeze. Brought it back, no hassle. Don't bother with the other guys, who may or may not have bikes and don't even know where to refer you. These guys will take care of you. They have lots of bikes and the guys seem to know what they're doing. Highly recommended.

We took the trail that runs along the canal and the flows along the outer perimeter of the city. It was super windy, but otherwise nice, and we had the wind in our face when we were fresh so it went very well. The bikes were great and clearly well maintained as there were no annoying sounds of derailleur rubbing or loose parts. Zero mechanical issues. We rode about 31 miles and turned the bikes back in with plenty of time remaining. They will charge you a $500 CA deposit but it gets immediately refunded upon return. Great business. Would recommend.

We wandered into Bicycletterie JR without any reservations or anything, and within 15 minutes we were on the road. They gave us instructions for the bikes and hooked us up with locks and helmets and we were off! They were super flexible about when we returned the bikes so we didn't have to get locked into a particular time to return. The bikes were in great shape and we had a lovely afternoon. HINT: If you ride down Rue La Genesse to the Prairies River and turn north you're in a protected bike lane the whole way and then you get to bike paths and lanes that go through nature reserves, parks, and cute little neighborhoods. We did 25 miles (40km) without ever being off a bike lane or path.

Small brands grown out communities of people focused on similar passions/interests. Brakeless is as much a clothing shop as it is a bike shop. Its interesting to contrast the experience of walking into Brakeless and walking into Off The Hook, another "streetwear" shop in Montreal. Im not dogging Off The Hook by any means. I liked that shop a lot. But there is something raw and unique about Brakeless. Authentic is an overused word, but if it applies anywhere it applies here. You can see it in the palette of more subdued colors of the clothing. You can feel it in the shops rough around the edges charm. And most of all if you spend a few minutes chatting with Sylvester, the owner, you know its all coming from the right place. Im honestly bummed I will probably only make it here once a year. Honest team, will give you good recommendations for upgrading/replacing parts for your bike if you need service or with accessories like safety products. The pacing of the tour was perfect, not too slow, not too strenuous. It is obvious that JF is deeply knowledgable about urbanism, bicycle culture, and the way our built environment impacts our experiences of life. The details he pointed out and the places he brought us are easily overlooked, but super interesting. It is rare to find someone who takes so little for granted in their home environment. This tour was not just a lesson about history and some neighborhoods of Montréal, but about how to observe the world around us. I would give six stars if possible. It did not hurt that the weather was perfect. If it had rained, probably only five stars. It was a fantastic three hours and a highlight of our visit to MTL.
