But these older adults be out here putting in work! Classes: I took a Bodypump class. If you've taken it once, you've taken it. Buttt I still enjoyed the class as a whole. Gym itself: okayyy, this gym is deffffff dated. It's on the smaller side, but I haven't been to the floor - only the class areas and locker room. The locker rooms are kind of gross. They smelled like chlorinated sewage and are just kinda grimy. Lots of hair (gag) and dirty lockers. Defffff bring your shower shoes. Showers have body wash/shampoo and conditioner. I also saw lotion and blow dryers and multiple scales. It's not my favorite place but I'll be back for some classes because I like OneLife's class offerings.

OneLife Old Town Alexandria update January 2026…read more Looking back to July 2025 when I first reviewed Onelife Fitness - Old Town Alexandria, VA, things have only deteriorated. Apparently corporate management determined not to allow any additional time between the end of the 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday Tai Chi classes and the noon start of Functional Lab (on Tuesdays) and BodyPump (on Thursdays). As a result, participants in the Tai Chi classes are still in the room at 4 minutes to noon, because management has elected not to change the schedule to permit more time in between these classes. Today the Group Fitness Director was personally present before the start of the noon Functional Lab class, and deflected concerns raised by participants waiting to get set up for the noon Functional Lab. She dismissed those concerns: she imagined, hypothetically, that participants in the Tai Chi classes would reject the schedule change, saying that if the 11 a.m. class ran from 11 to 11:50 instead of 11 to 11:55 a.m., it would appear that this was a "Tai Chi Lite" class. That hypothetical seems to ignore reality; it also permits continuing disrespect shown by the Tai Chi instructor toward both her peer instructors and participants in the noon classes. As the Fitness Director personally witnessed today, the Tai Chi instructor was still holding class at 11:56 a.m., disregarding the schedule. Whether this approach is due to the Tai Chi instructor's deliberate disrespect of the incoming class (and the respective instructors) or simply her inattention to the time, management has yet to effectively address this problem.

You don't have to be PTO employee to join the gym, though you will need to register for a badge to enter the building (no fee nor obtaining the badge is that difficult). Go in as visitor to the gym (the security guard to the building are super friendly too), let the gym staff show you around and price range. If you decided to quit the gym and leave they give you back remaining amount (i.e. sign up in Jan, and want to quite in June? they refund you the amount even in the middle of month and year). The only downside to this gym is that it closes according to the federal government operation (snow days, delays, and holidays) and compare to other gyms their operation hours are somewhat limited (closed on Sundays, and weekdays closes by 8:30PM).

I went to this gym in the beginning of June as a guest of one of the fitness instructors. I was truly impressed by the professionalism, the equipment and the number of group fitness classes (M-F only). This is not your typical "we have a fitness center in our office building to show people we care about your health gym" but rather a top notch facility that people outside of the PTO would pay a competitive price for.

Next week I will have my 200th training session with (James) Eliot Hyche at Onelife Fitness -…read moreCrystal Park, in Arlington, Virginia. The fitness center is in what is rapidly becoming the Amazon.com-friendly hub of high-tech businesses in Crystal City, Virginia (which straddles both Arlington and Alexandria VA). My purpose in working with Eliot was straightforward: I retired after 45 years as a lawyer and judge and needed to gain the resilience needed to meet the travel challenges of my retirement. Eliot has been an amazing trainer. In 30-minute workouts two days a week, Eliot has introduced me to the essential exercises that focus on balance, range of motion, agility, and upper body strength. With the Onelife Fitness Center's platform of equipment and space, I've learned how to work with hex bars, kettlebells, dumbells, barbells, medicine balls, resistance bands, TRX equipment, and free weights safely and effectively. As a new-comer to the fitness experience, I have learned with Eliot's help how to manage my time in the gym to get the most out of a 30-minute workout. Eliot emphasizes how to properly set up for each exercise - to move safely and confidently through a series of different routines that never get old. What's been most impressive is Eliot's range of knowledge about how each exercise set affects the body. His more than nine years of experience has given him useful insight into how each kind of exercise can address goals - like improving balance, strengthening key physical functions, and losing weight while maintaining a balance that takes into account protein intake, calorie monitoring, and life affirmation. This training is goal-oriented. After I retired, I sought out polar expeditions offered by Quark Expeditions, in both Antarctica and in the Artic Ocean. These expeditions come with a level of risk that few voyages pose: each day the itinerary includes boarding a Zodiac - a military-grade 10-person outboard motor-driven rubber pontoon raft that carries us from ship to shore. If a wave breaks wrong (or if Orcas attack) the ten of us who are passengers on the Zodiac will have seconds, not minutes, to try to get back to the Zodiac. This requires balance, resilience, and upper body strength. Over the past three years, Eliot has guided me to where I have the strength, resilience, and upper body strength needed for these expeditions. Among the skills Eliot brings to the table is his engaging outlook: he remembers what we've studied, offers well-informed exercise alternatives when I reach limits due to my age and abilities. He's friendly, supportive, easy to understand, takes excellent notes about the progress I'm making, and is clearly comfortable in the trainer's role. He's also been great at scheduling and re-scheduling and knows the resources of the Crystal Park Onelife Center (including its outstanding salt-water lap pool). Not once has he been late for a scheduled training session; not once has he had to cancel a session. I've had trainers before and was concerned about starting a training program with a trainer at OneLife. They're not inexpensive. I got lucky with Eliot - he's the real deal. Over the course of the last three years, I've gained confidence in working out on my own. I've lost ten percent of my body weight, reduced my blood pressure, seriously improved my LDL cholesterol score, totally removed all (like 100 percent) of plaque in my coronary arteries, and gained a new appreciation for watching my food intake. This year I'm planning my sixth and seventh polar expeditions - after exploring Antarctica for the second time last year I'll be joining a Quark expedition to the Northwest Passage, and then a Quark expedition to the east coast of Greenland later this year. With the improved balance, upper body strength, and resilience that I've gained through this training, I think I'll be ready for the Zodiacs exploring the High Arctic.

Most people complain about Jim's because of two things: they want all the amenities like you're going to the Bellagio in Las Vegas and they wait on you hand and foot or you have a lot of sensitive people who just because they don't get what they want when they want an exactly how they want it, they complain. All the staff that work there are really cool, they open up really good hours which is 5:00 a.m. and if you can't get your butt into the gym at 5:00 a.m. whose fault is that? I wish they would close a little bit later maybe 11:00 or midnight but that's neither here nor there. It's a huge facility and they have great amenities. Basic but good enough. So in summation I've been in this gym for over a year and I like it a lot and I have no problems with it. So what the heck are you waiting for after reading this? GET UP AND GET IT DONE!

While trying to find the exit, I made an honest mistake and walked across a small green section. Instead of handling it calmly or professionally, multiple staff members were rude and condescending, and one staff member even made a threat about following me out. That felt intimidating, inappropriate, and made the environment feel unsafe and very uncomfortable. The overall staff interaction and vibes came across as unprofessional and very ghetto. I was looking at their personal training here, but after how I was treated, I would never choose to give this place my business. I'll just stick with my current trainer. On top of that, many of the machines appear very old, run-down, and unstable. A lot of the equipment looks outdated, which raises concerns about maintenance and overall care of the facility. Overall, this was a really disappointing and off-putting experience, especially for a first-time member.

Today, my kid was turned away because the kids club was at capacity due to poor planning, crappy ratios and the staff's inability to look at the schedule, look at who's registered for classes, look at who in those classes has a kid's membership and go from there. When I raised concerns with the staff and front desk, I was met with attitude and told to call guest services if I need help. This was what Ivan said after he said "we can remove the service for you right here" before he doubled down and threw a card on the counter and told me to call guest services. Additionally, one of the inept employees in the kids club, misidentified me as the parent who cussed her out and was hostile. I wasn't hostile - I made a few faces and asked specific, pointed questions. Y'all can't handle it because you don't know how to work under pressure and weren't given talking points? Fine. Be mad then, sis. Don't care. So, Ivan wanted to play savior and "write my name down" so that he could "determine what to do." FOH. Don't get mad at me when I ask legitimate questions about your policies that are not posted. Further, when you elevate your voice, don't get mad at me when I do the same. I have never had a positive experience here with the management team. I have filed multiple complaints and addressed multiple concerns and have never been followed up with. Ever. I have already requested cancellation of both of my memberships, and a refund. This gym is a hot mess. The management team is terrible. Spare yourself. And they're anti-Black American. I've had multiple experiences that demonstrate that: -no acknowledgment of Juneteenth in similar ways as July 4, despite it being a majority Black club -prior to opening, the guy whose last name is Tillman spoke about the fact that they don't have a gym because "this is PG COUNTY and all the thugs would show up sagging" -ongoing interactions I've witnessed and experienced between myself and the management team
