Searched online for barber reviews. Found Cuts by Hugo near my downtown office. Walked over and asked for Hugo. Greeted very nicely. Hugo asked what I wanted to do with my hair and I explained what I wanted. He took his time using mostly scissors to cut my hair ( a sign of a true barber versus most hacks that use clippers to shave your hair and call it a haircut). I was very pleased with the end result. Clean, crisp, professional haircut. I will definitely return to Hugo and would recommend him to others. The shop was clean, quiet and I was able to relax while getting a great haircut. read more

I've gotten bad haircuts all over the DC area, and these guys are the only place that don't require me to fix all sorts of issues in the mirror once I get home. They're quick and smooth. The young guy stationed closest to the door is definitely my favorite and knows to just go with my "usual." The straight-edge razor with warm foam is a nice touch on the edges and they have you out of there in about 20 minutes. The $25 is fair, but they only give you change in $5s, so that'll likely be the tip. Again, it's definitely worth it if you want something safe, simple and clean. read more

I walked in yesterday around 3 and they were able to seat me immediately. It was really a great experience overall. I don't remember the name of the barber, but he was the first guy when you walk in. He gave a nice, fast, quality cut and, unlike most barbers, he was able to get all of the little clips of hair off of my face and neck. I came away from the cut thinking that I'll definitely be back during my lunch break. I was also surprised at the price. For DC I was hesitant to go to a barber because the normal prices have been about $45 and they cut for $25. Definitely a great experience and worth checking out. read more

I've been going to Mario's for three years now. I never have to wait long for a haircut (I'm usually there about 10 am) and I always leave satisfied. The barbers are a guy's guys: South American futbol is always on the TV and they are pretty friendly. I do wish that their rates were a little cheaper ($22 for a normal cut), but good luck finding anything cheaper in DC. Still, I say that Mario's is about the best bet in town. read more

I can say that Hugo Gonzalez , a barber whose trade is well-polished and seems to be born with a trimmer in his hand has cut my hair without mistakes...and can fashion any style put before him. Went to Mario's in a rush on Friday afternoon at 3:30. I read the reviews on Mario's and since I work downtown, thought I would give it shot. My hair is fairly straightforward getting a scissor cut. I walked right in and sat down. There were two gentlemen there working, so I would guess lunchtime would be slow. The gentleman who cut my hair was the younger guy at the first chair. He did a great job. It took about 15 minutes with the hot shave of the neck at the end. All for $25 CASH ONLY. Will definitely be back. read more

One of the best hair cuts in my life. Hugo really knows what he is doing on any type of hair and any style. Very friendly and fun enviroment. Always showing the news or any live sports event of the day in the TV at the shop. Its really a very good experience being here and get a great hair cut, cant really ask for more. I walked in with my 6 year old son and was able to get his hair cut immediately. The barber quickly fixed my son's precious bad haircut and followed my directions precisely. Super fast and convenient if you work downtown. Mario himself didn't cut my hair but the guy who cut my hair was excellent. Make sure you get there before noon because it starts to fill up quickly. I didn't have a wait but by the time I was done (about 20-25 minutes) there was already a line. It's cash only. They give great haircuts. I had pretty long shaggy, unruly hair, and got a great haircut that is very business professional. I highly recommend. read more

The older gentlemen furthest from the door is as bad as others have alluded-- after completely messing up an easy request for a fade on the sides and a bit off the top that left clumps and waves on both sides of my head, I asked him to blend it in more. I made the mistake of suggesting he use a comb and scissors (which most barbers who cut my hair will do to completely or after using clippers)-- he started ranting about how he is the doctor and patients do not tell him what to do. So I asked him if he could fix it with clippers-- he said most likely not. So again, I asked that maybe he could just do a bit with the scissors. He then kicked me out. I suspect he can no longer use scissors and frankly-- he couldn't really use clippers anymore. The JW Marriott where I was staying then directed me to Allous at the W Hotel around the corner and they were able to repair the damage from Marios. The young barber nearest the door seemed quite comfortable and good (people were passing on the older gentlemen to wait for him). But if it is the older gentlemen-- pass and wait or go to another barber. read more

I've been going to Hugo since I came to DC almost three years ago. Every time I'm traveling or out of town and have someone else cut my hair I have to come back to Mario's to get it right. Went for a walk in appointment and came out happy as can be. As a guy, finding a decent haircut for under $40 in this city can be a challenge and so when I heard about mario's I was intrigued. As soon as I walked through the door, Marco greeted me and started to cut my hair. This man is a true professional. After 15 min, I looked in the mirror and saw myself with one of the nicest haircuts I have ever had all for $25 + tip. Would def recommend this place 10/10. read more
