We spent a delightful four nights at the Cuthbert House as an interlude stop between Charleston and Savannah. When visiting city it only makes sense to stay at a beautiful B and B directly river front with unobstructed views, As a senior couple we decided to opt for the ground floor coast suite with sitting area outside fanned seating and a large bathroom. This worked as it avoided stairs except for breakfast and social hour. We didn't miss out on spectacular views however as the breakfast alcove or veranda during social hour provided them . Cuthbert house is about a 5 minute stroll into the main part for town for restaurants and activities and parking is plentiful in case you wish to venture further afield. The served breakfasts and social hour appetizers were delightful. Chris the owner attends the social hours is a wealth of information and insures that all details of operation are attended to. Its not surprising that a number of our fellow guests were return visitors. We are glad we opted for a 4 night stay. The staff we polite engaging and extremely helpful with great local recommendations. We still owe the chef a Mofongo recipe which will be forthcoming shortly. Thank you for a great stay! read more

Honestly, I don't know why things have changed here. They had a good thing going, but this stay was not as good as our last one which was 8 months ago. The Inn was full our whole stay, which is good for them, of course. The owners were too much in your face, when all we wanted was quiet time away from chaos at home. The social hour was just OK and for around 16 guests, the appetizers were very minimal (crackers and hummus). They did away with the evening sweets, although you still get a chocolate at turn down service. This was our 4th stay here and yet they were not aware we had stayed before. Breakfast was yogurt every morning, you better love that for 4 mornings, along with a main dish which was cold, every morning. I am not a fan of cold eggs and cold plastic looking cheese on top of everything. Options would have helped, like no cheese. They asked if all was OK, but I am not going to be put on the spot in front of a room full of people who are ooogling over everything they are offered. I would have loved a piece of toast instead of yogurt offered, but they didn't give you that option. Disappointed and will not stay here again. By the way, since they renovated the rates have climbed up. Some paint, change of decor in areas, a wet bar, and a fence were the changes made. Our room was the hideaway. Winding staircase and then a short steep stair case to the room. The bathroom is nice with a large walk in shower, seems like the water is at the end of the line to this room as everyday was low pressure and hard to get hot water. We were able to take showers later in the evening after dinner times. Tried to one morning around 6:30 to 7am, but after letting the water run for 20 minutes it was still cold and dripping out of the shower head. We inquired about it and was told the road works are to blame, later we asked a guest if they had problems with the water and they had no issues. Location is awesome! Owners are nice, staff are nice and shoot you a smile, but we will stay elsewhere, because we can't take out a loan just to stay here as well as all the issues we've mentioned. read more

Today was our last day at the Cuthbert house. We spent Saturday to Tuesday for mother's day weekend. Ed and Connie were amazing hosts and Mary is a phenomenal chef. Breakfast every morning was beyond tasty and so full of flavor. When we arrived all three of our names were on a sign at the front desk welcoming us to the house. It was a very cute and personal touch that made our first day very nice. The room was fantastic! We stayed in the "Coastal Suite" which had a lovely view of the water front and marina. The house is in walking distance of the town with a lot of unique shops and very good restaurants. Highly recommend the restaurants, Hemingway's Bistro, Plums, Sultus River Grill, Breakwater Restaurant and Bar. Overall a wonderful stay and will definitely be back. read more

Lovely location on the water. The service for breakfast was terrific! There was a mix up on my room reservation and instead of the more modern coastal room I was given the more antiquated period Eastlake suite which just isn't my style but the inn is lovely. The reason for the 4 stars is the sofa bed. It is extremely thin mattress with the metal bar feel through your back. A new sofa with an actual bed mattress is very much needed. Stayed two nights in this wonderful antebellum inn. Shannon greeted us at the door with a big smile and southern hospitality. Our suite was on the ground floor with a private entrance looking out at the waterfront. Spanish moss dripping from the trees and spring in the air. The room was possibly the most comfortable, quaint room in which we have ever stayed. Every little detail was seen to including a Kureg in the sitting area. Time stood still for two days as we were transported back to a more genteel time and place. Short walk to town and the Beaufort waterfront. Looking forward to our next stay. My husband and I took an impromptu trip to Beaufort to celebrate our anniversary and booked The Coastal Suite at the Cuthbert House Inn, based on their stellar reviews. We were in our room all of three minutes before deciding to extend our stay! The Coastal Suite has a private entrance at the garden level, along with a patio with the most stunning views. I had been afraid when choosing the room that it may be dark due to the garden level at which it's situated, but was thrilled to find it light and bright with all of the windows and beautiful light sea foam green wall color. I had added on the romance package, choose two, in order to surprise my husband with some bubbly and chocolates. I emailed the Inn and asked that the items be put in our room as a surprise. I received a prompt reply stating that they 'love to help with surprises!' and that they would take care of everything. We were also invited to park in the Inn's parking lot prior to check-in in order to explore downtown without having to pay for parking. Upon check-in, we found our champagne set up and perfectly chilled alongside the chocolates, which was a great way for us to start our stay! The location of the Inn can't be beat, either. Extremely close to the quaint, historic downtown, we were able to walk to the bookstores, bars, and restaurants with ease, sauntering back along the water at the end of our evenings. We started our first night (after our champagne!) at the nightly social hour the owners Ed and Connie host. They were so gracious! We were able to sit and enjoy snacks, wine, and warm conversation. We really enjoyed getting to know them and meeting the rest of the guests at the Inn. We would then run into fellow 'residents' throughout town while we were out and about and felt like we were having a bit of a shared experience with fellow visitors. We also enjoyed one of our breakfasts at the Inn, as well, and were treated to fresh fruit and eggs Benedict, which were a great start to our day. Ed was in the Inn's office and made sure to come out and say hello to us, ask about our night, and make recommendations for lunch and dinner locations based on our conversation from the night before. Very thoughtful! Our trip to Beaufort will stay close to our hearts, and our experience at the Inn is one of the reasons why. We live in Savannah, just an hour down the road, and truly believe that we've found our home away from home when in need of respite. read more

We had an AMAZING elopement at the Cuthbert House! After two cancelled weddings due to COVID-19, my husband and I decided to elope with our immediate families at the Cuthbert House in December. It was the best decision we've ever made. Ed and Connie were the most wonderful hosts. They arranged everything, from our photographer and our officiant, to our cake, to our champagne toast, our evening happy hours on the porch, and our beautiful breakfasts each morning. Connie also got us a dinner reservation (which was difficult to do during COVID) at the most delicious restaurant in downtown Beaufort (Saltus River Grill). I cannot recommend the Cuthbert House's elopement/small wedding package enough! It was so stress-free and everything was stunningly beautiful! It was the best weekend of my life! read more

We stayed 5 nights in the Coastal Suite, while visiting my daughter who lives in Beaufort. The MOST AMAZING B&B I have ever stayed in. Beautiful old historic, impeccably maintained southern coastal mansion right on the waterfront. Our Suite was ground floor (under the verandah and sunroom), so very quiet, and private. Huge main room with super comfy king bed, large separate sitting room with sofa/chair/ottoman/tables/fridge/microwave/ bar height table and stools. Everything anyone would need! AMAZING bathroom with heated towel rack, oversized walk-in shower with multiple shower heads, and the softest, hottest water...(being west coast residents, I always swoon at soft water). The breakfasts were over-the-top, and where I put Cuthbert House #1 of all the B&Bs we have stayed in. Table set with fine cloths, linen placemats, real silver, crystal, beautiful botanical china, fresh flowers, individual French press coffee pots (or a lovely pot of tea with all the trimmings), and glorious cooking!! Every breakfast began with a bowl of perfectly ripe mixed fruit, with coffee/tea and juice of choice, followed by main entree of the day. In 5 days we had French toast with sausage patties, orange/blueberry pancakes with sliced ham, frittata, eggs scrambled with cream and chives and sliced breakfast sausages, eggs florentine (2 poached eggs on a pile of country hashbrowns cooked with sliced ham, mushrooms, onions, and sauted cherry tomatoes over a bed of spinach, topped with truffle cream sauce). OMG... it was like being a pampered guest in pre-Civil War luxury!!! The Hosts were so gracious, and friendly, we felt like family. Free passes to the nearby state beach, plus beach chairs and beach gear are available. Bikes are also there for guests to use. Evening "happy hour" on the verandah with wine and appetizer gave us a chance to mingle and chat with the other guests. There are so many excellent restaurants just a block or 2 down the street we could have stayed weeks and never tried them all. Just an overall FANTASTIC B&B EXPERIENCE!!! read more

The best time of year to visit, the weather was awesome and the views from our front patio room (Coastal suite) were spectacular. The best B&B we have stayed in. The owners were out of town so we were greeted by Mary. She is fabulous! So friendly and outgoing. She entertained us at the evening social with her Mardi Gras mask and beads, such a nice touch to the evening. We chose the Coastal Suite and loved it. Very private with its own entry and a beautiful view of the water. The room is just perfect, a nice seating area with high top table and chairs, sofabed, microwave and fridge and wine glasses. The sleeping area looks out at the water and the bathroom is beautiful. Heated towel rack, large shower with a handheld along with a rain showerhead. Bed was so comfortable and the breakfasts were delicious. Easy 2 block walk to the charming town. The river walk park is the best I have seen. Lots of swings and benches. Wish we could have stayed longer, but we are only 5 hours away, so we will be back. read more

Departing Charleston, we head south west to our next place of lodging, Beaufort, SC as we booked several nights at the Cuthbert House. Constructed in 1810, restored to southern splendor, and recreated into a B & B, the Inn faces the Beaufort River and is a prime example of Victorian architecture. It's also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Situated on a corner lot, it's quite expansive, and greets it's guests with a wide set of masonry stairs leading up to a wrap around porch. Majestic columns are positioned at both the lower and upper porches adding to the dramatic grand facade. Period furniture and fixtures greet one as you enter the long guest hallway with a formal parlor off to the side. A spiral stair leads to the second floor suites. A charming breakfast room and nautical themed porch are situated off to the side on the first floor. Entry to the Inn by guests is usually made via the rear of the building which faces a generous parking area. Parking spaces are clearly marked by a series of elevated red reflectors. No cramped parking here nor tight maneuvering of your vehicle to get in or out of your space as the area behind you is very spacious. We stayed in the Oak Room, a romantic, cozy room with a Queen bed and a mattress you don't want to leave. The bathroom in this suite is very special; it houses a very large walk-in glass enclosed shower equipped with both a rain head and a hand held wand with individual temperature controls for each. Amenities abound in this suite including a wide screen HDTV and telephone. A comfortable sofa and ottoman complete the furniture ensemble. A side chair came in handy as well. For clothing storage, a large closet and, a chest of drawers were provided for keeping everything in it's place after unpacking. The Oak Room is on the second floor overlooking a formal garden and fountain. Table and chairs are for your use on the porch. Quiet was the theme as our evenings were not disturbed by anyone adjacent to us nor in the gardens below. Breakfast is a happening here. Reserve your time ahead and then join the others in the Victorian dining room for a real treat. Homemade baked dishes are served individually as well as fruit cups, coffee, tea, juice. Service was gracious, helpful, and transparent. Soft music is heard in the background; our table settings included silver plate and china; what else is there to like? Coffee is available around the clock via an automatic brewer. Wine, cheese, and imported meats are served mid-afternoon for guests who gather in the Drawing Room. You may sip your wine inside or out on the porch in a comfy chair. We walked to several restaurants while staying at the Inn. We shopped in the area as well and did not need the car until we took a side trip to Hunting Island State Park, a wonderful seaside area at the Atlantic Ocean. Hunting Island Lighthouse can also be climbed at this location. We also spent a day touring Savannah Georgia. It must be mentioned in this review that staff members, Wes and Tara, excelled at ensuring that our comfort and needs were met at all times. They are to be commended for providing excellent Customer Service. Thanks Wes and Tara for making our stay memorable! We also had the opportunity to meet and speak with the Inn's Owner, Jeff Thomas, who assisted us with a few minor requests pertaining to our room; thanks Jeff. The Cuthbert House was the icing on the cake ... this beautiful, historic antebellum mansion will not disappoint. You are warmly greeted by Sharon or Shannon and Ed and Connie are the ultimate and gracious host and hostess. From the moment you meet them and the whole staff you feel right at home! After you check and settle in, you are welcome to join the social cocktail hour that Connie and Ed host, it's a wonderful time to meet other guests and Connie and Ed are wonderful Ambassadors to Beaufort... restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, anything you need, they will guide and direct you. Do wake up for the delicious breakfast, grab a coffee, step out on one of the veranda's and through the magnificent and beautiful oak trees with Spanish Moss draping down you will see the sailboats moored in the beautiful Beaufort River. What a way to start a day! We loved Beaufort and the Cuthbert House so much that we knew this was where we wanted to exchange our wedding vows! We did just that on the 28th of December 2018! Ed and Connie took care of every detail for our "just us" wedding! It was lovely in every way, even the weather was perfect, with beautiful blue sunny skies we were able to exchange our vows on the beautiful front porch with the most gorgeous scenery behind us! The owners and staff went above and beyond to make our stay the best we have experienced at a B&B anywhere and we've stayed at several wonderful B&Bs over the years. They provided a very safe and clean environment while also providing the attention, service, and good food that we love when we stay at a great B&B. Shanon was awesome! Our two day stay was very nice. The building is beautiful. We spent one morning reading on the large front porch and looking out at the water. We stayed in the "Ballroom " which has high ceilings and a notably comfortable bed. The room had ample space, a mini fridge and a tv we never used. The only complaints about the room were that the door to the bathroom wouldn't stay closed and the rollaway bed our son used could use an upgrade. The B&B is beautifully situated just a short block from downtown and the Marina. The back harder is lovely and when it isn't blistering hot it would be an ideal afternoon spot to rest or have a snack. We also enjoyed a lovely social hour where we met other guests and chatted with the proprietors. The provided breakfasts were beautiful and of high quality, but small and very limited for picky eaters. read more

The Cuthbert House Inn is everything we were seeking and more for our weekend getaway. A beautiful anti bellum structure facing the Sound and the park, the establishment is run by hoteliers who obviously enjoy their profession. Our room, known as the Ballroom, was huge and beautifully appointed. Ceiling height windows faced the Bay and Park. And the quiet was hypnotizing! Our room opened onto a veranda, furnished for lounging! And we did!. Even read through a rainstorm protected by ancient trees festooned with Spanish moss. Our host and hostess guide the place unobtrusively. But are available to suggest dining spots, places of interest and make reservations. Unlike many establishments of this sort, the place is fresh and gleaming, The Breakfast Room is an elegant starting point or the day's adventures. Breakfasts are always a delicious surprise, made to order and served with exquisite attention to detail. Do go. We did and we're returning soon. read more

I paid $227 for one night stay in the Victoria room. The bed in this particular room is very uncomfortable since the mattress sinks towards the middle and my head felt it was on a decline. The view of the room was not as expected. The shower is very small and I am 5' tall and 108 lbs. I would not stay in that room again. read more

It was within walking distance to local restaurants and the boating dock. We receive a free parking pass to the lighthouse which as beautiful. It's $2/person to climb up the lighthouse. This is our third visit to the Cuthbert House Inn and I owe them a review. First, Ed and Connie are the perfect hosts. They go out of their way to mingle and chat with their guests during the complimentary wine and cheese hour. For you Francophiles, Ed is French and you can share stories about travels in France. They have two dog friendly rooms and both are spacious and beautifully decorated. The inn itself is tastefully appointed in a fashion which highlights its historic significance. Breakfast is always delicious and the service from the attentive staff is most welcome. This is now a permanent stop for us on our travels to and from Florida. Well worth a detour. Lovely, historic and ideally situated on Bay Street which is THE street to be on in Beaufort. With it's many quirks and creeks, the Inn makes you feel like you'v steeped back in time ... except there is electricity and running water. The staff friendly, there is an informal approach to hospitality and the breakfasts (which are included) are worth waking and coming downstairs to enjoy.Would like to have seen an upgrade in bed linen and feather pillows instead of those dang rubber neck benders. We LOVED this B&B! Such a beautiful, historic home in the heart of quaint Beaufort. Our room was quiet, comfortable, updated and the bed was high quality (foam mattress I believe). The bathroom was large and had a nice big jet tub. Our suite had a sofa, small kitchenette with a Keurig coffee/tea/hot chocolate maker. They gave us a roll-a-way for our 12-year-old daughter. There was also a sofa, upholstered chair and several table/chests. The staff was so friendly and conversational. The breakfast each morning was very good quality and fresh fruit included. It was a nice surprise that they had bikes for us at no charge, beach chairs and a beach bag full of towels. We will definitely stay here again. read more

We stayed here for our 5 year wedding anniversary! It was absolutely beautiful! Very close walk to downtown and the yummy restaurants! (Our favorite spot was Old Bull Tavern!). Staff was very warm, friendly and helpful! The social hour at 5:00 was a fun way to get to know the other guests and the owners (who made you feel right at home!) We just loved learning about the history of this breathtaking house and the welcoming city of Beaufort! My Hubby and I brought our bikes with us and were so glad we did! After taking a buggy tour, we rode our bikes past any of the beautiful mansions we wanted to visit again. A great way to see the sights at your own pace! We can not wait to come back! I found this B&B online and after looking at the pictures, decided to book it. Upon arrival I was in awe of the room we stayed in. We stayed in the Mariner Suite. Many times, pictures can be misleading, but in this case, the pictures do the Cuthbert House no justice. The room was very neat and very clean. The breakfast is served a little early (8 - 9 am) compared to other B&B I've stayed at, but the food was great. Rather than the breakfast being served to you in your room, you must go to the dinning room area and sit at one of the 6 tables set up in there. It is a great house to stay in just to experience being in a place that is 200 years old. Because it was pouring down rain the weekend that we stayed, we did not venture out much. However, the house was right down the street from galleries, restaurants, and right in front of the water. So, the location was great. We drove across the bridge and went to Hunting Island to visit the beach and light house there.
