Cuisine: 3 Service: 1…read moreDecor: 6 Value: 7 Overall: 1 Many of the pizzerias in Lexington/Columbia sells pizzas by the pie, so I always love seeing a pizzeria that sells slices like NYC, where I lived 85% of my life. Therefore, I had to visit Nicky's for a taste. Traveling to eat every good slice of pizza in the five boroughs of NYC, my standards are very high. Sadly, Nicky's regular slice fell short of my expectations. The dough was lacking any taste while the crust was somewhat cardboard-ish. In addition, it felt like there was barely any tomato sauce. All in all, not a very good slice of pizza. What's worse was witnessing the owner and an employee arguing with a customer. Not every customer is in the right. I don't believe that concept. However, this was a small matter that could have been avoided. The customer complained, then the employee escalated the situation. Instead of the owner diffusing the argument, he poured gasoline on the fire. Not saying the customer was absolutely right, but a shouting match really dampens the mood of the other customers. I will not be back.

We got there about 20 minutes after opening and sat in one of the booths. The waiter took our orders quickly and brought out our drinks. We ordered 3 personal pizzas and a steak and cheese sub. We had one plain cheese pizza, a Supreme personal pizza and a build your own personal pizza with pepperoni, onions and mushrooms. We also ordered one small Garden salad. 1 sweet tea, 2 waters and a diet coke. The salad was excellent. Crispy cold lettuce with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, two types of cheese and good croutons with ranch dressing. The steak and cheese sub came out and we were surprised when wee saw the bread. We were expecting a regular style hoagie bun or baguette type bun, but looked almost like a pita bread from the top. I asked the waiter what type of bread it was and he said they make their own bread. It was excellent. Looked like a naan bread almost. She ordered jalapeno's on it and it was excellent. Said she'd order it again. The pizzas were good. I had the supreme and the sausage was real good. We all agreed that the crust and cheese were very good. Two of us thought the sauce was different and must've had something it it, as they didn't rave over the sauce. I had the supreme and there were so many toppings that I didn't pay much attention to the sauce. Mine was very good. We were surprised that they only offer two sizes of pizzas...personal and large. Large is $24.95 and personals are around $14.95. They have a good selection of pizzas. Our one complaint was the pricing. They charge $2.00 for toppings and $3.00 got premier toppings. It's the same charge for either the personal or large pizzas. Our personal Cheese pizza (with no toppings) was $9.50. My personal Supreme pizza was $14.95 (which contained mushrooms, onions, pepperoni, bacon, black olives and green pepper) while my wife ordered just a personal pepperoni with onions ($2) and mushrooms ($3), totaling $15. Seems like they'd charge less for toppings on a personal size than on a large! My bill as $43.97 before the tip. Our neighbors bill for their pizza, sandwich and drink was $32.59 before tip. They were charged $4 for jalapeno's on the side and slices of tomato.

Unfortunately, while the service was excellent, the food was a major disappointment. My wife ordered the Chicken Parmesan, and I ordered the Penne alla Vodka with meatballs. The vodka sauce had an overpowering smoky flavor that tasted like either bad bacon or way too much liquid smoke. It completely overwhelmed the dish. The meatballs were even worse rubbery, bland, and tasted like they contained more filler and egg than meat. I honestly couldn't enjoy them. My wife's Chicken Parmesan wasn't much better. The chicken was dry, and the tomato sauce was surprisingly sweet, which just didn't work for us. The bright spot of the evening was our waitress. She was fantastic friendly, attentive, and did a great job taking care of our family. Our disappointment was entirely with the food, not the service. Being originally from New York, I've eaten Italian food from neighborhood pizzerias and family-run Italian restaurants my entire life, so maybe my expectations are higher than some. But good Italian food doesn't need to be complicated. It needs good ingredients, properly prepared sauces, tender chicken, and meatballs that actually taste like meatballs. For an anniversary dinner, this was unfortunately a big disappointment. Based on what we were served tonight, I'm not sure we'd return. Veneziano's could benefit from taking a culinary field trip to New York and experiencing what great Italian-American food can taste like.

This place came highly recommended by our friends, and they were all spot on. When I first looked at the menu, I was surprised at how many choices they have! You can choose wheat, or a gluten free cauliflower crust for many of the pizzas. You also have the option to CYO (create your own) and build a pizza from crust, to sauce, to toppings. There are so many options- and the hubs is pretty traditional, so we chose one off the menu. We went with the "No Nitrate" which is essentially a meat lovers type of pie, except this one had onions-- which was really nice! We carried out, and the place was packed. The service was still excellent and the staff were super friendly and asked that I check to make sure everything looked ok before I left with our order-- which I thought was really nice! This place will definitely be in the rotation. I can't wait to come back and try some of the more unique options they have!

Hearing that the owner/pizza maker is from Long Island, I had high hopes. After tasting a variety of their pizzas, pastas, and desserts. I believe it satiated my cravings, but it's clearly not the same quality I would find in NYC. With that said, our server was quite friendly and helpful, albeit sometimes absent when we needed water to be refilled or more napkins. This restaurant is not the best Italian i have had in SC, but it has that local Italian shop feel. If I am aching for a taste of NYC, I would come back.
