I like hanging around in the morning and make new friends in this place. It's convenient, clean and the (young) staff very friendly. During the rally the parking is packed with cool vendors. They also don't gouge the gas price. Make sure you stop say hi and check all the stuffed trophies.

Their small cabins have no running water however the bathrooms are only steps away. The bathroom building has showers and laundry available and they keep them squeaky clean. Very nice amenities. The cabins themselves come with AC, heat, Cable TV, microwave and mini fridge. Each cabin also has a provided picnic table, fire pit and BBQ pit. We brought our own propane cooktop and pop up shade. Both are not a necessity. The General store and gas station were super convenient and vendors fill the parking lot at rally time. The store has almost everything you might need while camping. The jerky and gourmet pickle selection was awesome! We also enjoyed the dried fruit. All available at the general store. Another great stay at a high class camping lodge!!! The kitchenette has a full size fridge, coffee pot (drip with mesh filter), dishware & utensils, microwave, and 2 burner cooktop. Bathroom has walk-in shower, towels, and hair dryer.TV has Roku and there's a picnic table & grill outside the front door. There's no place to hang clothes and the dusty old antique dresser has tiny drawers, so plan to live out of your suitcase. It's a quick 5 minute drive to Hill City which has several good restaurants and a grocery store. The hosts live and work onsite, always around, and are very good with communicating. I'll definitely return!

The beds were comfortable, the kitchen, fridge and stove allowed us to prepare meals (we didn't use the grill outside but would have if we weren't touring so much). We appreciated the TV with cable, the "living room area" and the covered porch area where my wife sat out and had her coffee each morning. This spot was perfect for day trips to Custer State Park, The Mammoth Site, Mount Rushmore, Deadwood and so many others. The only minor issue we experienced was that we came during an unprecedented heat wave, and there's one air conditioner for the whole unit. They do provide fans, but this meant we couldn't close doors at night without rooms getting warm. All pretty minor and not something that would matter during normal seasonal temps. We'd definitely recommend this place. It is very affordable and provides plenty of room for your family.

Needless to say this place won me over. Lisa and Harvey have done a phenomenal job with this campground and are fantastic hosts. The General Store has most everything you need in case you forget some essential camping needs. All the sites are on nice, flat ground though there isn't much shade. Our site was next to porta potties (plus) and we also had a shelter over our picnic table (plus). We didn't look inside the cabins but they look cozy and have a porch swing out front. The swimming pool is small but really nice and is naturally chlorinated due to the 750 lbs of salt that's been added. Good for the skin :) It can be cool at night here so bring warm clothes. We arrived in July and on the way through the hills we saw snow on the ground!! It's quiet, relaxing and really beautiful here.

Took a tour of the facilities and they have lots of things to do. Darts, slots, pool tables, TV's, cards, the list goes on. There is a very nice golf course on site. It is one of the few lodges that is open to the public, in addition to Elks Members. They have 10 RV spots with water/electric hookups for members only. I'd highly recommend fellow Elk's to stop by if you're in the area.

The set originally built for the movie "Dances With Wolves" is now a bunch of ramshackle shops that house historic displays and sell handcrafted items. Live demos show how these items were made in the olden days. Herman Jones, the octogenarian owner of Fort Hays, is the real thing. Do listen to his personal story and ask questions. He not only welcomes visitors but delights in demonstrating how to fashion rope out of toilet paper! Of course, the dinner and show are the main reason to visit. Guests are seated on communal benches in a rustic mess hall. The chow, slung in rapid-fire chuckwagon style onto handmade tin plates, is remarkably tasty and filling (beware of the feisty "slapper" who all but slams a baked potato onto your plate). The hearty cowboy menu never varies. No alcohol is served. Live entertainment features a cast of multitalented performers who encourage audience participation. The "Elvis" impersonator is a riot!

I would expect this rating to improve as the improvements to the facility continue. We stayed for a week and would certainly come back if we find ourselves in the area. As it stands, here are some pros and cons: PROS- The location is beautiful and very peaceful with great night skies. It's out of town but not too far out to access stores and restaurants. There are quite a few full hook up sites, but for those who only get into an electric and water site, the shower houses are nice. We came late in the season so they needed a little cleaning and maintenance, but they have good water pressure and plenty of hot water. The laundry facilities are free. The machines are a little tired, but you can't beat free! Over the air TV reception is good. We got 15 to 20 channels including the four major networks. The owner, Terri, is very accommodating and wants to make this an inviting facility. CONS- The full hook up sites back up to a road. This was not a big deal for us and the road is not very busy, especially overnight. The water pressure is pretty low and variable. The sites are currently all grass and have no fire ring or picnic table. There is no Wi-Fi. (In our experience, even the places that advertise Wi-Fi still don't have it...). However, we have Verizon cell service and got four bars of signal.
