The store is very…read moretechnical and although certain departments are very well laid out, it can sometimes be difficult to find the things you want if you don't know exactly what you are after. Items are very technical and you are sometimes left to feel like you need an engineering degree to track down certain electrical components or electrical accessories. The great thing about this shop is that you are able to find components that virtually no other high street shop sells and that it is accessible i.e. You can enquire about exactly what you need before purchase, unlike on the internet, where it is very easy to buy the wrong component because you are not really sure what will work with your piece of equipment. They have an abundance of staff to assist you who are generally very polite, (at times almost too polite in a slightly annoying American Have a nice day way!!). However, due to the technical nature of the store, the staff are nearly always engaged with other customers. I spoke to two members of staff, one of whom was not particularly helpful because I didn't know the make of the item I wanted (If I'd have known that I would not have required his assistance!!!), and another member of staff who was very polite and very helpful indeed. When it came to paying for the item a queue started to form at the till so staff promptly opened another till to alleviate the wait, which was refreshing. When I had to replace an item, they were also very accommodating, found the item I required and replaced it with no fuss.

The store is really well laid out and the staff are very friendly and helpful, (a guy behind the counter couldn't wait to come up and hand me their new brochure!!) The tiles are a selection of ultra modern and the more traditional, with prices ranging from 50p each to £20 a tile depending on the type of effect you are after. Some of their new glass tile range looked absolutely amazing. When it comes to tiles, they have everything you need under one roof.

The garden centre area is also large, but it tends to have lots of familiar and popular favourites, so if you want anything specific or out of the ordinary, you'd be better off going to a specialist nursery. It is possible to park here and walk to the main shopping area nearby, which includes the Asda and Sainsbury's, as well as the furniture and other stores in the Princesmead retail park.

A very large and accessable B&Q in Farnborough, supported by an equally large customer car park…read more The place is located next door to ASDA and can be a real pain to get in and out of on busy weekends, so better to leave the DIY shopping to late evenings or early mornings. This store has everything the budding DIYer or gardener needs at quite reasonable prices for a large DIY chain. I tend to find smaller items like tapes, screws, nuts & bolts etc are not cheap here and can be found for a much more reasonable price at stores like Wilkinsons. However, for your larger items it is hard to beat with a very good returns policy if anything goes wrong with your purchased items. The garden section can be excellent or very dissapointing, depending on which day of the week you go or what the weather is like when you get there. The place is typical of many large DIY type stores that try and take on the garden centres, i.e. there is plenty of choice (usually slightly cheaper), but the plants are not looked after, and many of them are dead or almost dead when you pick them up. I suppose you have to get in there early in the morning before the sun has a chance to dry them all out. Their garden equipment is quite expensive, however they do do an excellent line in composts, mulch etc which is the cheapest around. They have a whole section of self-service tills in the store that need a cohort of staff to keep them working (they would be better off binning these tills and putting the staff on the normal tills). I steer well clear of these tills and usually go through the normal payment process much quicker than the poor old individual who spends their Sunday afternoon waiting for a member of staff to reset their self-service till !!!! They also have a very good selection of free "How To" guides to help you get the most out of your DIY project. On Sunday Craig from Big Brother was outside the store trying to sell garden products to passers by, but I don't suppose we can hold that against B&Q too much!!!

Good local decorating shop with a wide selection of paints, wallpapers and decorating materials…read more Formerly selling only to trade customers, they are now open to the public. They have 50 years of experience in the business. As a result, their stock includes trade brands as well as familiar domestic brands (eg Dulux, Crown, Cuprinol) and high-end paints (eg Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and Craig & Rose). But the main reason for shopping here - apart from the convenience - is to get expert advice, which is not normally on offer in large chain stores. They'll also colour match any item to order. Some items may have to be ordered in, with a few days' wait.

As it's small the range isn't great. In general Debenhams returns policy isn't good as the other department stores like John Lewis. I purchased a bathroom robe which started fraying straight away. The staff in Debenhams were not interested and telling me to send the item to their QA department! I only use Debenhams if I have to!

Initially when you approach Wickes at Farnborough you start to think, how good of a DIY store can…read morethis place be when the outside looks so dated, is so in need of a lick of paint and requires general modernisation. Unfortunately the trend continues inside, with very dated aisles and the whole place looking like it should make use of some of its own stock and trend the place up a bit. Notwithstanding the look of the place, you can get some extremely well priced DIY items here. I required certain bathroom items and when questioning staff they were extremely helpful and knowledgeable and presented me with alot of information that as a DIYer I would not necessarily have thought of (which will ultimately save me a bob or two!!). Helpful staff, competitive prices facelift required!!
