Dear Carolyn Shapiro:
It saddens me to have to write to you regarding your article (though well written) featuring Amanda Moshovetis (posted on April 20, 2016). When you asked her "How do you keep curls sane?", part of her answer was "When (clients) leave, I print (clients) a custom 'curl-scription', which outlines all of the products I used, how much to use and how to use them."
I patronized her establishment on Saturday, March 05, 2016 and spent $175.00 for services. I never received a printout listing the products she used on my hair, though she mentioned the products to me verbally. In fact, I attempted to simply obtain the name of the brand of demi-color she used on my hair and she refused to provide this information to me. Amanda, in my communication via text with her this month, made it very clear to me that I must "make another appointment" (translation: spend money) in order to obtain the information she stated that she provides her customers in your article.
One of Amanda's statements in your article that was true was the fact that she is "really about cutting the hair in its natural state", which sadly, was to my detriment. I have afro-textured hair. My type of hair requires a "blowing out" or "straightening" of my natural curls to be evenly trimmed. Amanda, putting it politely, butchered my hair and I have the pictures to prove it.

To append to my feedback, I truly thought that Amanda was sincere in appreciating me as a customer, especially since I spent $175.00 for services at my first visit on March 05, 2016. To her credit, Amanda did not rush and explained the services she provided and allowed for me to ask questions. Her salon suite was nicely arranged and there was adequate space. She also provided refreshments and candies of which you may partake of throughout your appointment. Given her recent attitude toward me (dismissive - for no reason), I must surmise that my prior interaction with her was a facade on her part. It is very disheartening to encounter a business owner who is two-faced. Sadly, I have no other choice than to state that this has been my experience with Amanda.
On the brighter side, I've been able to nurture my hair and recapture its glory after Amanda butchered it (please refer to my photo). I wanted to discuss her mistake with her privately via telephone. I did not contact her about it this past March for three reasons: 1) I loved the demi-color brand that Amanda chose, 2) I travel often and did not have the time to contact her and 3) I understood that she did not intentionally mean to 'cut' my hair so unevenly - she simply did not know how to evenly trim afro-textured hair. Any stylist who is familiar with Afro-textured hair knows that the curl patterns must be straightened before they are trimmed. Thankfully, I already had a stylist who knew how to cut my hair down to even it out.
In fact, I highly recommend Jayme Sartelle of Montreal Stylze at http://www.montrealstylze.com/ for your trimming and cutting needs. The prices are reasonable and you can always reach either Jayme or a colleague via telephone. When I visited Jayme soon after having had my hair butchered by Amanda, she thought that a trainee at one of the local cosmetology schools was responsible. I did not mention Amanda's name at that time. I informed Jayme for the first time when I visited her on 09/21/16 for my routine trim that Amanda was responsible for the botched cut I endured on March 5th.
I also had the pleasure of meeting another DevaCurl stylist yesterday, Mr. Angus Purve of Joli Hair Salon at http://www.burlingtontowncenter.com/store/joli-hair-studio/2137040383/2138845782, who did a wonderful job of doing a demi-gloss on me. I was also surprised to learn, after I discussed my matter with Angus, that the "DevaCut" was not supposed to have been done on wet hair. Also, Angus also styled me very nicely and freely allowed me to see and take photos of all products that he used on me. I also recommend Angus for your DevaCurl needs as he can be available from 11 am - 7:00 pm most days (and later). Angus also stated that he can be available for special appointments as required and will also refer his clients to other colleagues if he is not available.

I wrote this review for four reasons: 1) Amanda made it clear that she did not wish to interact with me unless I plan to spend more money for her services 2) It is unwise to underestimate clients and make them feel devalued 3) she made a published statement that contradicted my experience and 4) Amanda must learn that the marketplace does not cater to the needs of businesses and 5) she must learn to deliver courteous "after care" to all (not some) of her clients. read more
