Haircut Review: $25 for an old lady with clippers asking you how to cut your hair. I'm sorry, but it was terrible and uneven. San Francisco seems like a shitty place to get a haircut. No wonder so many guys here either have shaved heads or shaggy mops. I would not recommend this place at all, but I suppose if you want a good haircut it'll cost a lot more at a fancy appointment only salon. I feel extremely sad and miss Los Angeles. Haircuts were only $15 and nice and actually involved the use of real scissors and skill, not just clippers. Depressing. The hair situation seems bleak. read more

Don't be fooled by the look of Curl's Up... it may seem like a hair products store, but dig a little deeper and you'll find a legit hair salon. Being as I am a guy, there are only a few things I looked for in a good haircut experience. 1. The person cutting my hair understands how to use the settings. I don't want someone who just goes by numbers and doesn't understand that you need to have some sort of transition between a 2 and a 3. These people AKA Supercuts are a dime a dozen. 2. The first trial haircut always puts you in one of those classic awkward moments with your beautician. You get into some really meaningless conversation that seems completely forced by them to pass the time and you just wonder... how many more minutes till I have to NEVER COME BACK. Curls Up: The guy cutting my hair (Mo) was absolutely PERFECT. Not only did he work on my hair like it was an artistic masterpiece, going over and over spots so that it looked great (fading, and working between the settings), but he didn't try to overdo our convos. Like a stripper in a strip club, he knew that conversation wasn't what I was interested in... just the final outcome. I would definitely recommend it to any dude who wants a quality cut... I'm surprised nobody has reviewed Curl Up yet.... Well, what can I say, this place is really great. I first came here to get a haircut in late August 2007 and thought that maybe they would just do a simple haircut. Not so, my friend. I sat in the seat and my stylist asked me if I wanted all my layers trimmed. I was very surprised to hear that she noticed my layers! So I was happy to know that she was able to trim all my layers without messing up my hair, haha. Today I actually just went back to get another haircut after waiting these past few months trying to grow my hair out. As you can tell, I became tired of my hair quickly and wanted change. So I went with a picture of a style that I wanted, and the same stylist was again very very good at cutting the style. I believe the owners are Korean--they are so very kind. They're quick with their haircuts, but it doesn't mean that they're not keen with details. Another plus--the haircut only costs $16, which is a pretty good deal for me since I was used to paying around $30+ for haircuts elsewhere. Sure, I could have gone over to Chinatown to get a $5 haircut, but I don't know if any of those stylists speak English..... I highly recommend going to Curl Up for great, quick service. What a gem of a salon! I have a fairly average bob-type haircut (not a simple cut because it is so precise) and have gone to pricey salons and was not as happy as I am with the cut I receive here--for $16! The first time I went to this salon it was out of desperation. My hair was getting that lovely, too full mushroomy look to it--it reaches my shoulders then seems to stop growing in length--and my most recent stylist had moved to Australia. I leave nearby and thought--"ok, I might as well go in and get rid of this mane." The stylists and the cashier are incredibly friendly and the cuts I have received in my now 6 visits to them have been cute. What more could a girl want? read more

After an unusually hot and humid day in San Francisco, my husband and I had come into the Northpoint Center to cool off a bit. I saw they carried French hair clips and wandered inside Curl Up. I love the way Curl Up feels like a throw-back from the 80's! The salmon colored cabinetry and decor was like stepping back in time. I was irritable and cranky due to some idiot at the store prior to our arriving at Curl Up looking me straight in the eye before looking down at his damned cell phone and walking directly at me. Needless to say I braced myself, continued my forward path and shouldered the guy and his cell phone fell out of his hand. Dumb f*c%! That'll teach yet another bratty Millennial to look down at their phone after eyeballing me and continue to walk into me like I'm going to move. I was ready to go back and bust the guy's chops until I met Lily. If you're looking for a wonderful stylist, look no further. Lily gave me a refreshingly cool hair wash and blow out that was soothing and altogether just what I needed today. We shared some great conversation, she was cheerful and funny! I very much appreciated her kind yet sassy nature and was immediately at ease and comforted. She took time to condition my ends and left my hair feeling light and bouncy. Thank you, dear Lily! My review is for getting my bangs cut only. I was desperate for a trim and on my way to the Safeway/24hour shopping center. On my way in I thought I might as well try it. I was a little nervous. I hate "cheating" on my hair dresser, but she is all the way across the city! All I needed was a quick cut... I was literally in and out in about 5 minutes. I brought a picture (just in case!) and right away the woman said no problem, "that is so easy!" So snip snip and I was on my way only $6 poorer. Coming in also gives you a chance to peruse the aisles of hair products including brushes, dye and anything else you may need. I've been searching for a go-to hair stylist for years, but no one has ever really caught my eye until today. Although she didn't work on my hair, Ivy made my aunt look like a new woman again. We didn't know what to ask for, so we just asked Ivy play around and do what she thinks looks best. She seemed to know what style would suit my aunt and exactly how to frame hair against face shape. Tons of selection of shampoo, conditioner and holding products (only) at this little strip mall shop. Poor/non-existent help a) only hair products b) you better know what you want because no one will know what your asking: Can I get some hairspray with some hold - "what, huh, you want what?" Do you carry spoolies - those things you put on mascara with - "what, huh, you want what?" Do you carry conditioner caps - "what, huh, you want what?" on no, maybe at walgreens c) probably going to pay a bit more than you might somewhere less convienient and more helpful read more

I showed him a pic of a loose updo with bangs and he started with a tight updo, forgot about bangs. I asked for a small basic bun and he did a very big messy thing in the back of my head. he kept it up just with tons of hair spray that showed my hair like plastic. I was charged $75 which is what I usually pay for a perfect elegant updo. read more

You have to look for this place as it's buried in the North Point Mall but it's worth looking for. Lily, a VERY sweet Irish Gal, who'd been cutting my hair for years, recently moved here after many years at another place in North Beach. Lily is such a pro and fun to talk to as well. And the new place and people are so friendly! You can park in the garage for free (they validate), go shopping (there's a Walgreens, Safeway, and a bunch of other stores), and get an amazing new look at Curl Up at the same time! read more

Haircut review: After getting my hair cut here recently, I have to say you get what you pay for. I couldn't get an appt. with my normal stylist so I went here for what I thought would be a quick, cheap *trim* only and was not pleased. A shampoo and cut is $25, the shampoo was great, but the cut was awful. I have long hair (4 or 5 inhes below my shoulders) and told him I just wanted an inch cut off the bottom and NO layers, and by the time he was done, i had three choppy, uneven, layers with the shortest having been cut off about three inches. He was cutting for a long time so I was suspicious but didnt say anything and figured he was just making sure it was even. When he finished he said something about doing it to make it "easier for me to style" - great, but not what I asked for. Went somewhere else and paid a lot to get it fixed and closer to one length, like I originally wanted. Very disappointed and defintely the LAST time I pay for a quick, cheap trim in the city! read more

Highly recommend this place, especially Lily. She was awesome. I'm so happy right now with my hair cut. She's the best hairstylist I had since I moved from New York City. I wasn't able to find anyone in SF that really made me happy. But then a friend recommended Lily to me. And man was it worth it. She takes her time to go over ideas with you and doesn't rush you and really makes you feel comfortable. She gives you advice on what works for your type. This place is HORRIBLE. I made an appointment for shampoo, conditioning, blow-dry and flat-iron. I called in advance, asked if they were busy, and scheduled the appointment for the same day. When I came in at my allotted time, a whole family was getting their hair done. I thought they would at least honor my appointment, but NO. They kept on attending the family which didn't have an appt. They said "30 minutes" except I am on my lunch break and only have 60 minutes. So this would NOT give me enough time to get everything I needed. Suffice to say, I am super annoyed, never want to go back and they just lost a customer because I work very close by and usually tell my co-workers where I go for Nails and Hair. NEVER GO TO CURL UP. I ventured in this place to have a quick blow dry and I was totally no satisfied with the service of the owner Lily. She washed my hair in a strange looking plastic basin, and the wash didn't feel very well rinsed and was pretty harsh. The blow dry was also a disaster the lady doesn't know even how to brush long hair and let alone using the round brush and blow dry. My hair look much much better when I do it myself and sorry to say the lady was not aware that she was not doing a good job at all. Looked around for products and it seems well stocked. We'll go back to buy products but NOT for doing my hair. read more

this place is a huge mom and pop store. really nice owners, great selection when you comes to hair products, and they really know their stuff... as for the hair cut itself, it was okay. i'm not a big fan of clippers, and ever since my last hair stylist only used scissors, i've been even more turned off to clippers. that said, this place is fine for what you pay ($16) but i wouldn't rave about it. read more

After going to this place for over 18 years, I am finnaly over the rudeness of the women that work there. This is EXACTLY what has happened alll five times I dropped in: Woman behind counter on phone. I walk in, she moves toward me, all the time still talking. I look on the shelf for the product I asked three months ago when they would get more in (been told "next week" every time). She does NOT get off the phone, doesn't help me. I pick a different product and go to pay - this woman could not be bothered to hold the phone to inform me I cannot pay with a debit card, just waved me off. I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN - with apologies to the very nice man that (I assume) owns the place, I will never be treated like this woman CONSISTENTLY treats me. read more

I have been coming here for the past 3 years. I love the guys who general cut my hair but all of them are gone. It's only the owner working And she is HORRIBLE, she cut my hair all uneven and I just wanted to a long bob. I made the mistake of getting influenced by her to let her cut my hair. I had hair till my elbow and she managed to chop it of uneven till my shoulder with layers on the back. Which I told her no and no agin. She basically did what she thought looked nice. I had to go to another hair dresser the same day to get my hair fixed cus it was so noticeable. This process took her two hrs and I literally had to tell her STOP cutting more layers and I jumped off the chair. I would still be ok if the hair cut was even. On one end it was short and then on the other layer it was long. PLEASE don't go if you love your hair unless you see a lady who is a bit on the heavy side and is tall. The owner is a tiny Korean lady with short bob. RUN!!! No matter how nice she seams. read more

Oh my gosh, don't go here. We stayed at the Hilton, coming in from Alberta to elope at city hall, and this and one other salon were within walking distance (the other closed on the Monday). I have fairly short hair and brought pictures of how it should be done... hairdresser did not even look at all pics (4 which had different angles... especially the BACK). I told her I needed a big barrel and flat iron to achieve the look and she didn't even own a flat iron (and the barrel was perhaps a med. which was her largest)! Hello, this is 2012 and you don't have one in your tool chest... I should have ran I guess. I did get an excellent shampoo but she curled little grandma curls straight across the back and seemed to get a little miffed when I said too tight, fluff them out. Other than blow dry my bangs, they were brushed straight down so I looked like a member of the Beatles. I ran back crying to my hotel to have to re-do my doo... stress I did not need at all. My husband to be came in with me, and had his appointment immediately before me... he has pretty much no hair, so how can that be screwed up, right? Well she managed. He buzzes the horseshoe shape around the lower bowl and he has stragglers on top. He told her several times "be sure to buzz the top empty" and he still had to shave the top when he got back to the hotel. I wanted to rant and rave at her but what was the point. Would never attend here again if I lived in SF. Wow, talk about being stuck in another decade which is surprising when you see how nice the shop looks. read more
