I am caucasion and wanted to dread my hair. I spoke with Anta on the phone and she assured me that she was very familiar with caucasion hair and could dread it. She quoted $40.00 which I thought was rather low, but great!
I got there and walked in. My hair is very curly and I felt it should dread easily (as I always came home with a couple dreads after a week at Burningman!). She said she would need to "braid" it first and then after 6 weeks when my hair would be REALLY kinky she could then dread it by twisting.
I felt that was excessive and I was really wanting dreads now. She said she would twist it and hope that it would stick. The price went up from $40 to $120.
I stupidly agreed even though all my instincts told me this was NOT the way to dread caucasion hair!!! But I thought they must be experts here..................so I did it.
I was soooooooooooooo uncomfortable in the shop. Talk about racism!!! Nobody would look me in the eye. Nobody addressed me when talking. All the ladies (customers AND employees) were chatting about movies, families etc.etc. NOBODY would even acknowledge me. It was so weird and uncomfortable. I tried to join in but it's hard when no one will look at you. I, of course, being the only caucasion in the place. You would have thought I was from the IRS or something the way I was ignored.
Anyway,I basically had scrawny twisted hair all over my head when they finished. It was only twisted partway down, leaving about 8 inches of loose hair. They plastered it with gel and told me not to wash it for 3 weeks and to come back for more twisting.
I tried to pay with a credit card and they told me then that they only accepted cash. So they sent me to an ATM machine, making some sullen girl who had been lurking in the corner ( who either was somebody's friend or who may have actually worked there) there ride with me (so I didn't take off without paying..............Jeez!). They gave her directions to the ATM and told her to go with me. The minute she was in the car she was on her cellphone yelling. I made hand-gestures, telling her I didn't know where I was going. She paused on her phone long enough to tell me she didn't live in this town and she really wasn't listening when they gave her directions. She then continued yelling into her phone. I had to pull over, call the shop and ask them to give ME directions.
It was a ridiculous situation. And to top it off----- I looked like a cancer patient with wisps of hair sticking out of my head.
I came home and my roommate and I looked on the internet. We found a GREAT site that gave dread instructions. She worked on me and 2 hours later I ACTUALLY HAD REAL DREADS!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's 8 weeks later and they look really cool. The website said that I could have "twisted" my hair until hell froze over and never have had dreads. That only works on African hair.
All in all this was by far the worst experience I've ever had as far as the beauty world!!! read more
