She gave me some of the best haircuts (and blow outs) I've ever had, so when we coincidentally moved back to Nashville around the same time, I was thrilled to be able to continue seeing her. Her haircuts grow out beautifully (can't tell you how many compliments I get). As someone with thick hair, I love the movement and life she brings to every cut. One of the things I appreciate most is that she just gets it--I never have to explain what I want. She always knows exactly what to do! On top of that, she's genuinely great to talk to, which makes the whole experience even better!

On a recent search, Kammi's place popped up. Her studio is near where I live. The combination of reviews, Instagram pictures and proximity convinced me to give her a try over one of the two spots I bookmarked. I initially scheduled a consultation/haircut. I'm Asian and my hair is naturally black. It was almost at my waist and had 1.5-year-old balayage that was a brassy orange on the bottom half. Kammi was welcoming and looked at a picture I brought in (#4 in my pic). I explained it was something I was inspired by because the blonde tone was not brassy nor that yellow/orange color that Asian hair gets when bleached. But I also told Kammi that if she felt this blonde tone didn't go with my skin tone, she should do a different blonde. The most important thing was that my hair was not brassy nor yellow/orange. Kammi said she wanted to do a blonde with a lavender undertone. I was intrigued and excited. Kammi's haircut was efficient. I wanted to take a good 5-6 inches off my length in a straight cut and add some long layers (comparable to #4). She completed most of it while my hair was still dry. Then, she washed and styled my hair (#1 in my pic). It was $63. When scheduling the appointment, Kammi said she could do the color in one or two sittings, whatever I wanted. Of course, no one would choose to come twice for the same result! I came in the next day for my appointment, the last of her day. She was running late because her first appointment was late and it created a domino effect. She was nice enough to let me know about 10 minutes prior to my appointment time. I had just parked so I opted to sit in the chairs by the entrance. She called me back to her studio 20 minutes after my scheduled time. She just finished up a client and had another client waiting with dye in her hair. Kammi said she was going to put the balayage foils in my hair and then finish the other client's hair. When Kammi rinsed, dried and styled my hair, it was definitely lightened. I wanted to get home to see it up close. The initial color was a bit darker than I expected and because I was told "lavendar blonde" I convinced myself I could see it. But after a single wash, my hair looked very yellow/orange with no hint of lavender blonde (#2 in my pic). I also noticed that there were lots of issues with the coloring - spotty color, sections of hair that went from light to dark to light, and some sections that went from my natural hair color to yellow and then to orange at the ends. My friends know I have a hard time speaking up in a restaurant when a waiter asks, "How is everything?" Unless I've been given the wrong dish, I tend to assume the chef intended the dish to be that way. With no indication from Kammi, I assumed this result was what she intended. So, I eventually got the courage to write to Kammi to let her know about my hair. Kammi was immediately responsive and willing to fix my hair for me. We set up a time and she made sure she blocked more time so she wasn't rushed and could get it right. I was running late and let Kammi know I was going to be about 15 minutes late. When I got there, she still had 5-10 minutes left with a client so the timing worked out perfectly. Kammi said she could immediately see all the issues I raised. I felt comforted that I wasn't imagining things. She proceeded to put in the balayage foils, this time starting from the front so they would lighten more than the back. While my hair was soaked with the toner/gloss, she worked on her next client. Again, the timing worked out because her next client arrived just after Kammi applied the toner/gloss. Though noticeably lighter, Kammi said she could still see warmth in my hair (#3 in my pic). She told me that if I wanted another round of the toner/gloss, I should come back in a few weeks or try a purple shampoo for blonde hair. I opted for the latter. In the end, though I'm not 100% satisfied with my hair and the lengths it took to get to where it is, Kammi's dedication to her client's satisfaction definitely left a positive impression on me. Unfortunately, Kammi's lack of experience with hair like mine and quality issues make me hesitant to return or recommend her to others.

I always prefer the quality of blowouts I get at a salon vs a dry bar type of situation, and M, Studio is near my office and had a little availability for day-of. Bonus: the blowout was very reasonably priced at $45 for a classic blowout. M. Studio is an Aveda salon tucked into the cute strip of the Shops at Porter East. It's shockingly spacious inside and incredibly dreamy: calming, plant-filled, lots of cozy seating, and knew I was in for a treat. A girl greeted me immediately and asked for my preference of water, coffee, or the special blend of tea only available at Aveda. I opted for the tea. The Aveda tea is very herby and not for everyone but I loved it, and it came for me adorned on a tray with a Dove chocolate - this spot is about all of the small special touches. Sarah sat me down and we walked through what I wanted in my blowout, noting my hair concerns, how the weather would affect the style, and what products I liked. I'm a hair product nerd and very familiar with Aveda products and Sarah is one of the few stylists I've had to truly understands how to use products tuned to hair type and style wanted, and I appreciated that she sought my advice for everything. Next up: a relaxing head massage, double cleanse shampoo and condition. While I sat, she also added in a little complimentary aromatherapy, hand massage, and weighted eye mask. The towel she wrapped around my neck after was nice and toasty warm; the whole experience was dreamy-levels of relaxing. We chatted throughout the actual blowout and though I'm not normally super chatty, Sarah was such a delight. They offer the option of a silent appointment, and I appreciate how explicit they are about catering to all your small preferences. The girl at the desk came back when I was getting my blowout and offered complimentary snacks: mixed nuts, sun chips, etc. The blowout was exactly what I wanted: smooth but with a bit of bounce, and a style that lasted me through a kind of drizzly night without requiring much upkeep. The next day, I spritzed with a little dry shampoo and was good to go for a second day of the style. I'm on day 3 now and just really impressed with how well the blowout has lasted for me. This hair studio is such a hidden gem for anyone looking for attentive, kind service, really relaxing vibes, and just a small treat to yourself in a hectic week. Cannot recommend them enough and I know I'll be back!
