    Espresso Toffee Bar
    Travis B.

Espresso Toffee Bar: Culver's originated in Sauk City, WI back in 1984. When I was a doughy kid in the 90's it had expanded slightly and I have fond memories of visiting the location in nearby Wisconsin Dells while on vacation. Today, Culver's can be found in 26 states serving up their famous Butterburgers and custard. For those unfamiliar with custard, it's similar to ice cream, except it includes eggs. The eggs give custard a smooth and extra creamy texture. Espresso Toffee Bar is currently one of Culver's rotating Flavor of the Day options. This custard has a rich espresso flavor swirled with old fashioned salted caramel, crunchy bits of Heath Bar, and gooey butter cake pieces. Beginning with the espresso base, it was perfect. Texturally it was smooth and creamy with the flavor not being too intense or bitter. My dish's mix-ins were not distributed very evenly, but when I got the rare bite containing all three (caramel, Heath Bar, and cake) it was superb. If you've never had a Heath Bar, they're crunchy toffee flavored candy bars. In this case, they go well with the espresso custard. I thought the cake pieces had a predominately vanilla flavor, with a hint of butter mostly masked by the espresso custard. Really my only complaint is it could have used more caramel, which was delicious but scant. Overall, this flavor is a must try for coffee/espresso lovers, but your typical frozen treat enthusiast will probably enjoy it too. Doughboy approved Doughboy_Food_Reviews

Review for today's stop. I was planning to stop at Sendik's to make dinner but changed my mind at the last minute and glad I did. Ordered inside and my order was made fresh. Everyone was friendly and the service was prompt. Checked the bag and all good- headed home to eat. Double on sourdough- excellent. Thanks Culver's and crew! #86

They have a bunch of gelato flavors, boba sundaes, Italian ice, and more! I decided to get a scoop of Superman gelato in a cup. If you were born in the 1900s, you might have had this flavor at a TCBY as a kid. Well, I had to go for it and it tasted JUST like I remembered! It's a couple different flavors in one scoop--blue vanilla, pink bubblegum, yellow lemon and green sherbet or something like it. Either way it was great and was only $6. My fiancée got one scoop of the mango gelato and it it was also very good and didn't have too much mango that it was overpowering. Hers was also $6, which isn't too bad for a scoop of gelato in this day and age. But they do have soft serve cones for $3.50ish if you want regular soft serve and don't want to spend as much money. The inside is cute and has neon signs of different things, it wasn't very busy when we were there. It is in the middle of a strip mall but don't let the outside fool you--the service was great and helpful. We weren't sure what was included in the boba or Italian ice and they were nice enough to tell us. I'd come back to try the Italian ice or to get the Superman scoop when I want some nostalgia.

In front is a sunken tree garden that must be a neat place to enjoy your food when the weather is nice. It's very shaded and has nice benches and a relaxing vibe to it. It's also the only place that I saw to sit down and enjoy your food. Inside the building is quite large but only has about 4 tables to stand next to without any seats. I think most people either go eat the food in their car or take it home. I ordered 2 scoops of their frozen soft serve custard. The flavored scoops were vanilla and turtle pecan. It cost $5 and change which was a real value too. I stood in a short line and had my dessert in less than 5 minutes. They have several lines to stand in to serve the many customers who come here. The vanilla scoop was rich and delicious. The turtle pecan scoop rocked my world! It had many half pecans in it and the custard was perfect in a buttery like taste that made me what to order another serving but in the interest of my waistline I decided not to. This custard impressed me. They also serve burgers, hot dogs, etc. too and I am sure it's all good here. This is a big operation that serves many people. I counted somewhere between 15-20 people working there all dressed in their white uniforms behind the counter. I wish we had a Kopp's where I live!

I would habe given 5 stars if it were for custards only, but burger and fries were quite poor…read more Reading thru a lot of old and new reviews, both from Yelp and internet in general, I got the sense that burgers used to be a lot better in the old days. Having tried them for the first time, I have to say, I can completely understand why they would say that, even without prior knowledge. I could definitely see the potential from the first bite of the burger. Patties were cooked right and gave me pleasant feeling of decent bite, except for being a bit bland. Buns definitely did not add anything to the totality of the burger, staying consistent with what everyone says. Made me wonder what kind of buns they used to use that made it better. Did not care for the soggy, green leafy part of lettuce they shoved into it. Like a normal person, I prefer a bit of crunch in my burger lettuce, but it did nothing but take away from the experience. I was sold on the idea of fried onions, but my onions didn't look or feel fried. Maybe my expectations were different on what fried onions meant? I was imagining deep fried battered onions, but maybe what I got was non-battered fried onions. Either way, it didn't leave any impression. I think I also made the mistake of asking for ketchup and mustard without specifically asking just how much. My burger ended up being too sour due to too much of both. I think I read on their website somewhere that I was supposed to be able to taste the specialness of their Wisconsin cheese, but everything else about the burger was so overpowering that I barely could tell if there was any cheese at all. Fries were SUPER soggy from the get go. I *only* brought the bad outside to open it immediately after grabbing them, so it wasn't like they stayed in the bag long enough to get soggy. Now.. having said all that. Custards were amazing! Definitely at the top of my list of frozen custards I've had thus far. The girl at the counter had me try both the daily specials and both were super good. So good that I'll probably drive my girls an hour out here just to buy them custards, especially as it gets warmer. If it were just for burgers and fries, I might have given them two stars. But since the name of the institution is Kopp's Frozen Custard, I'm more inclined to be a bit forgiving.. I had them at 3 stars originally, but I think I'll bump it up to 4, landing them personally at 3.5.

It's run and staffed by super friendly people and they are patient with people like me who can easily get overwhelmed by choice, especially when all the flavors look so good! The quality for price is such a good value. I never NEED the waffle cone, but I like to get it once in a while because more ice cream is always better! Every week they make new fun flavors, all in house, with fresh ingredients. When they're out, that's it. I have my favorites that I watch for, but then I always find a new favorite too. I don't know if they have a "flavor forecast" like Kopps, but they should if they don't. The ice cream is creamy and decadent with strong flavors that will make your heart smile. Honestly, a scoop is all it takes to turn around a bad day. There is a rewards program that doesn't require an app. It's a punch card that, after 10 purchases, gives you a spin on the prize wheel. And if you forget your card like I do, they'll give you a new one. You can bring them all in to consolidate too, which I verified with the owner last week. There are tables and chairs inside, as well as some chairs outside. It can feel crowded when it's busy, so I appreciate having chairs just outside to sit on if you don't wish to eat in your car. Though, I've done that as well. Other than waffle cones, they sell pints, cake cones, dishes and, for those who can't pick just one or 2 flavors- flights of ice cream. Among other things. And please note that they are closed Monday through Wednesday to make ice cream for that week.
