Had the Cuban sando - would only recommend it if you ADD the PORK! This made it a little more expensive than I thought was reasonable for a very tasty sandwich because it's an add-on for the pork. Three of us tried this hopping restaurant. When you walk in it is crowded & emits a fun & authentic vibe. The food at other tables looks amazing! We apparently ordered the wrong dish, because our experience surely wasn't matching the experience of others. We each ordered a Cuban sandwich. I've had many of these at other restaurants & they have been so excellent. The Cuban here was really bad. Again though, I think the other food we saw at other tables would have made our experience a great one. Our Cuban sandwiches had the correct Cuban bread for sure. But the meat was not roast pork...it was truly like a piece of bologna...yikes! The filling was sparse & lacking flavor & truly disappointing. I can't believe the reviews, so I must have (silly me) ordered the wrong thing. What did I get? Funny you ask. A CUBAN. The 2* are for the bread. The meat in the sandwich is delicious cuts you'd get at subway. The flavor has a unique taste, especially when you bite into a black peppercorn. Something tastes like Mexican inside a sauce. Busy place between 11am and 1pm. Good idea to order ahead. I had a bit longer of a wait than I intended but nothing horrible. Maybe 25 minutes or so. Many people arriving and leaving with food while I was waiting. the restaurant was clean enough and the staff seemed polite enough for being very busy. I ordered some chicken soup for my under the weather son, he said it was very good, pricey at $9 I thought but it was an entire quart so well worth it. Tacos Al pastor were authentic and delicious with all the expected accoutrement. The Side of what looked and tasted like turmeric rice was skippable. Lastly, we ordered a couple Cuban sandwiches. Not great. They are basically bologna Paninis. They were not bad, just not what I was expecting. I will go back and try some other items for sure. Been coming here for lunch since 2006 since the they were a variety store across the airport. To now, focus on made to order services. With that said when you arrive, specially, for lunch around 12pm prepare to wait because they get BUSY! Line almost goes out the door. My advice arrive early or call in your food order. I came here for a quick lunch after work. It's a smaller sized place but there's is a ton of seating. Everything is made right behind the counter. The staff were really nice, went over the menu with me. I ended up getting a steak sandwich. Living in Miami, finding a place in Tampa that has Cuban food that's really good is fantastic. The steak sandwich was huge, a ton of flavor in it, came with a great spicy sauce. The pricing was normal, what you would expect to pay. I got 2 asada (steak) tacos and a asada quesadilla. So freaking bomb! 18 bucks for 2 tacos, quesadilla, rice, beans and a drink. Clean and homey feel. Reminds me of my tias house. I'm a frequent eater at the Cuban Mexican Restaurant and can't believe I haven't written a review for them! This cleverly named restaurant has...you guessed it...both Cuban and Mexican dishes. Here are my ratings based on different criteria: Quality of food: Pretty good...for tacos at least. Just about the only thing that I ever get here is Mexican style tacos...which is what I recommend this place for. My two favorites are the chorizo and the al pastor. The tacos come with seasoned meat, cilantro, and onions served with hot sauce and lime wedges. The greasy meat has top-notch flavor and the hot sauce is homemade goodness. The other thing that I used to also get was empanadas which they call meat pies. Then I started noticing just how greasy and old these tasted so I stopped getting them. Note: they have recently started using squeeze bottles for the hot sauce and it is not working out. The small hole in the nozzle causes either just the liquid part to come out or the cilantro ends up jamming the hole. Decor: okay. There are some posters of Cuba but for the most part you won't remember anything but the food. Oh...also...they loudly blare Christian music on their speaker system. Cleanliness: decent. The tables are kept clean and the trash is frequently emptied. However, the smelly unisex bathroom is not the cleanest and often runs out of paper. Service: ok. Usually, there is one (very bored looking) teenager taking your order and about 3 very overworked folks prepping the food. When the order is ready to be picked up, one of the guys yells out the number on your receipt and a lot of times people don't hear or pay attention to the guy. This causes some backup and annoyance from the rest of the folks waiting for their food. Speed of food preparation: hit or miss. This is the biggest need for improvement from this place. On random days, the line of folks almost reaches the door. It can take up to 10 mins to place the order and up to 15 mins to have just two tacos made. A lot of times, people place huge orders over the phone and the kitchen area really backs up. This causes people waiting to have to constantly check how much longer till their food is ready. I think they need to prioritize based on how easy or hard a dish is. For something like tacos, I should never have to wait more than 5 mins. Price: cheap. Two Mexican tacos after tax cost around $4.60 which is pretty cheap. If you're in the area and are craving some good tacos then this place is worth checking out. I would not go out of my way to come here though. read more

I was devastated when the Airport Variety Store closed and they opened this place. I went there once shortly after they moved and the food was fine but my attitude was not. I've grown up with the Airport Variety Cubans and was salty. I went today and absolutely loved it! I had the Cuban steak and cheese and a guanabana juice. Sorry I didn't get a picture before I ripped into the sandwich and I was feeling a little self conscious so I didn't take a better one. The Cuban steak and cheese is pallomilla with onion, cheese and shoestring potatoes the best. That time I came before and was salty I had a cafe con leche and egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. Both were great and so were the prices. I'm still salty that it's not in the previous location for nostalgic reasons but I love that you can get tacos now. And jugos. read more

I had a Cuban sandwich and a beef empanada. PRICE: Not too bad. About $5 for small, $6.59 for a large Cuban sandwich, but $2 more to add roasted pork on the sandwich. Empanada were $2.49 each. PORTION: the big sandwich is probably enough for two smaller people. The sandwich had tons of meat! The empanadas were a good size, not tiny. Yummmmm!! After a horrible experience at a neighboring business we came here for lunch for comfort plus we were starving. The good thing for us is we beat the lunch crowd and it got packed quick! I ordered the Cuban sandwich with Cuban roast pork of course and my wife had the meat pies that came with black beans and rice. My sandwich was full of pork, ham and salami and cozily pressed in perfectly toasted Cuban bread. Omg it was so good. My wife really enjoyed her meat pies and is still raving about the dough, "nice and flaky" as she said and the filling of ground beef was seasoned perfectly and "delicious " as she exclaims!
