I am picking my brother up from the airport and so I decided to look for food around the general San Mateo area and found this place. I remember eating Cuban sandwiches back in college and thought they were one of the holy grails of sandwiches so when I saw that this place made them, I had to swing by and get one. I ordered their signature Cuban sandwich, the family meal which came with black beans, pickled onions, veggie sofrito, spring mix salad, fried sampler which included yuca fries, maduros(fried plantains), and tostones(different version plantains). The sauces I chose were the guava habanero bbq sauce, Guantanamo sauce, and the habanero salsa. The main protein of choice was the lechon pulled pork and I added the Cuban beef brisket on the side. Cuban sandwich- definitely can't go wrong with this item. The bread was nice and crispy, the cheese had next level umami and was dripping in delicious gooey-ness, and the meats were near perfection. Lechon pulled pork- this dish was decent, it had a hint of that sour taste you get from lime and the flavor paired well with the habanero and guava bbq, which was by far my favorite out of the three. Brisket- bursting with flavor, you can eat it with the rice that comes with the family meal or throw it in a tortilla to bring all the flavors together, I personally prefer this over the lechon. Fried sampler- the maduros were delicious, never really liked plantains that much but this was pretty good. The tostones were okay, they definitely needed sauce, and yuca fries were okay as well, also needed sauce. Cousins took me out for lunch. We felt the need for pork and we settled on this place. The location is on a main street but there was plenty of parking as we got there early at noon. My go to is a Cuban sandwich and it didn't disappoint. Plenty of pork and ham with extra pickles. I also saw the yucca fries and wanted those as well. It wasn't over salted and was tasty. The highlights I thought were the condiment sauces they provided. I recommend the habanero sauce as it was delicious and totally not mouth searing. The staff was friendly and unobtrusive. Cubano - the closest real cubano we've had is in Miami (man those were good)! This cubano was okay. It seemed like it was cooked in rush because the cheese didn't melt enough. Friday night dinner with my sister and mom, this place did not disappoint. Small restaurant on el Camino with indoor/outdoor seating offering tasty Cubano dishes. My mother had the bistec Cubano with rice and beans- the steak was seasoned well and tender. My sister had the crispy shredded chicken- the chicken was delicious, a bit oily but very flavorful. I ordered the surf and turf sandwich but asked for lechon instead of the steak. Let me tell you, this sandwich was delicious!!! I put a phone order in and thank goodness I did. 30 mins for food pick up. When I got there, there was a big line just to pick up food. They do not have two separate lines. It was such a mess. Items are pricy and small. "the best Cubano", was certainly not the best cubano I've had. The pastries were very tiny and not the best. My cheese was not melted on my sandwich , a big pet peeve of mine. I'm probably the only person in the last 700 reviews they have to not love this place and that's okay. So happy that I stopped by & finally tried this place. Perla our server brought us our menu, we ordered at the counter & then she brought us chips & 4 kinds of house made sauces. They were all delicious. We got the Cubano & the Philly bistec, that philly was a 10 out of 10, so juicy & flavorful!! I'll definitely be back for that. I was craving a Cubano real bad and had been wanting to try Cuban Kitchen for quite some time now. Since we were already in the area, we decided to give this place a go. We called ahead and placed an order for the Cubano as well as a Bistec sandwich with a couple of side orders of the Yucca fries. While they said it would be a 15-20 minute wait until the food was ready, when we got there less than 10 minutes later, our food was pretty much ready to go. The first thing I tried was the Yucca fries - their small order comes with 3 pieces while their regular comes with 6. The fries come with an aioli dipping sauce on the side which is absolutely delicious. The fries themselves are cooked so that they are perfectly crispy without being greasy. A plus. However, I was a little disappointed with my Cubano. The sandwich has not just the traditional ham but also some pulled pork but the pork was pretty dry. While the sandwich itself was not bad, there wasn't anything that really stood out to me about it. My husband's Bistec sandwich was better in terms of the moisture of the main protein but overall, in our opinion, it still wasn't a noteworthy sandwich in terms of taste. That being said though, I'm still glad I gave Cuban Kitchen a try and will definitely be coming back if only to get some more of those Yucca fries! read more

They have indoor and outdoor seating. It's not a big place, but it is busy, and very tasty. The cubano sandwich was excellent. And I ordered the mojito chicken platter, it was perfect. There are sides you can select, though I went with beans and rice. Plantains were perfectly cooked. and the chicken so flavorful. I also appreciated the cashier explaining the various sauces, drinks, and preparations for us. If they are busy, you may need to ask for the sauces, but they had a selection of Crema Ajoii, Habanero, Guantanamo Sauce, and Cien fuegos. Really excellent place. Though they have cocacola, give one of the Cuban soft drinks a try: Mate, pineapple or other softdrinks. They also had a limeade, that I want to get next time. read more

Also got the maduros which were sweet and soft just like I like them. If the edges were crispy it would've been perfect! Got the veggie bowl with mushrooms and broccoli. I was surprised that it was pretty delicious. The mojito limeade and guava cran were both refreshing. The guava cran ran on the sweeter side. I've had this place bookmarked for awhile now and spontaneously decided to make the trip here for lunch, it did not disappoint. I don't have much experience eating cuban food, but I am qualified to tell you if something is good or not and man was this absolutely delicious. Outside has colorful seating and some plants which give it a fun little vibe. Inside is clean and modern with a touch of that authenticity that you'll find in a many latin American restaurants, to make you feel like you're about to get a nice home cooked meal. We ordered the ropa vieja, side of tostones and a side of plantains. The ropa vieja plate comes with rice and beans. Everything was perfectly seasoned, even the rice was not just plain white rice. The meat was perfectly juicy and flavorful, and the beans were a nice compliment, especially with the pickled onions. The tostones were hot and crispy, probably the best I've had. The plantains were warm, sweet and perfectly caramelized. The real star of the show is the sauces they give you to add to your food. There was a guava bbq sauce, a spicy sauce, a garlic white sauce, and a yogurt crema sauce (sorry i didnt get the names of the sauces, the labels on the bottle were illegible). Cuban Kitchen is located right on El Camino Real in San Mateo. I visited them for the first time last month for some take out on a Friday evening. I ordered at the side door attached to their parking lot. The young man was polite, and after placing my order he went looking for me in my car after a short 15 minute wait to drop off my order, which was quite considerate of him to do so. I went with the Ropa Vieja(shredded flank stew in a tomato based, chipotle-paprika sauce with green & red bell peppers) and I shared an order of the Maduros(sweet plantains) and Yuca Fries(made with cassava). The Ropa Vieja was lightly spicy and the flank was juicy and tender. I went with the salad and rice as sides. The salad was a large portion and I liked how it was individually packaged. The Maduros and Yuca Fries as recommended if normally enjoy these sides. Supporting small businesses these days is as important as it ever has been for me, and when I find a small business that deserves my support for its quality of products and service levels, then I am not hesitant to sing their praises. The only disappointing thing about Cuban Kitchen is the fact that I've only JUST discovered it. This restaurant is amazing! Located just off of El Camino in the souther San Mateo area, Cuban Kitchen not only has ample parking but has also paid some attention to detail regarding covid precautions with posted signage/labeled parking spots to allow contactless curbside QR code ordering and delivery. They also have a small but sheltered outdoor seating area if you so choose to outdoor dine. All that aside...the food. Wow. We were able to try both the ropa vieja and lechon plates. They even threw in both the aioli and guava bbq sauces for us to try. Both meats were absolutely delicious: the lechon was perfectly cooked/tender and the ropa vieja was flavor packed. The plate was served with sides of rice, beans and maduros. The sides weren't just a nice compliment. The beans and rice were super tasty and surprisingly flavorful! I typically try to post photos of food for reference but the food was so damn tasty that the plate/container was empty by the time I remembered. The service/staff were really wonderful. I have driven by Cuban Kitchen countless times on my way to San Mateo or taking the local way back home. This past weekend, I finally decided to give them a try as I was running out of restaurants for take out. Ordering was a breeze as I parked in their attached parking lot and walked up to the small door on the right. The nice young man took my order and said it would be ready in 15 mins. It was about 5:30pm on a Friday evening when I placed my order. I decided to order the Shrimp platter(spicy, smoked paprika), and I choose salad(which came nicely boxed) instead of beans. I also ordered a side of Maduros(sweet plantains), and a half order of the Yuca Fries(fried cassava). I was definitely hungry on this Friday night. I liked how neat they were in boxing everything and nothing spilled over and everything stayed nice and warm until I got home. The shrimp was juicy, fresh, and mildly spicy. The Maduros were really nice and plump. The Yuca fries were good also. Everything tasted fresh and I would order everything here again. The young man who took the order came out to the parking lot calling me, nicely thanked me for the business and genuinely seemed appreciative. Great spot for takeout with lots of options! My boyfriend and I didn't feel like cooking so we decided to try this spot that's been in my bookmarks for YEARS. The staff was super friendly and the food was incredibly tasty, especially the ropa vieja plate and the surf and turf sandwich. Yeah I came here pre-Corona with my main man Tim on our post-work commute back from San Francisco. Tim recommended it to me, and it truly is a hidden gem. The flavors on their food are so strong and delicious, I love it. They also have some awesome sauces that go great with the food. This place is also awesome if you're on a keto or paleo diet, because they have a selection of paleo plates on their menu. My one gripe was that this time, my meat was slightly overcooked.
