It's also weird how they at times have a lot of TSA level fake security while a drug dealer is literally cattle calling that he is selling weed 20 feet away from them. Like why not just call the police & have them escorted off the premises? At times I've seen security act just as wild as the passengers. The station itself is nice. It looks like it was recently renovated. It's pretty much a bus depot with buses that go all over the southside coming here. As always KEEP YOUR HEAD ON A SWIVEL & CALL THE POLICE if you need help. There are a ton of shady characters. I've seen people before try to get a CTA employee to help them out with an issue & act surprised when the employee doesn't help them. Just like the "security theatre" that is TSA, CTA isn't law enforcement... they CAN'T enforce laws. They will only assist you by making a report & contacting the actual police.

Watch your back too especially getting on the Red Line or waiting for Pace Suburban Bus or CTA buses. This station smells like smoke, cheap beer. Don't risk on taking the elevator unless if you ever smelled a crackhead urine. I only go there if I gotta transfer different buses or going straight to Downtown Chicago on CTA Red Line. Don't trust anyone. Do not take the taxi. I had seen few fights there. I had gotten few starred. I had beggars asking me for money too. Just say no if any people asked you anything.

Of course it's not in a terrific location, but it's mostly clean and safe. Lots of busses to get onto from here. There's a large area for shelter while waiting for one. A better than expected location, and it's usually pretty fast coming or going. It serves the Orange Line. The station is located in Gage Park. Even though it has a bad history, it's still an improving area. This is at 49th and Western. Best about this is how fast it is to get through here. This is the one that goes all the way to Midway, the other Chicago airport that gets unappreciated. Getting there is a lot faster. Stops like this are one of the reasons. It has fewer, meaning the trains come a lot more often. This station is pretty clean for as busy as it gets, and it doesn't have a bad smell. Getting to Midway is convenient from here. It's only a few stops away, and if you're getting off here there's lots of busses to take you places. There's usually not a long wait for trains.

I was planning on being nice…read more I'm telling you all... other than encountering some human excrement once, in probably 100+ visits to the station I've had no issues. Being a big city, you might meet an occasional character, but at no time did I feel unsafe. Full disclaimer I usually use Monroe right around rush hour or early evening. The station has a customer service agent in the booth, and is well lit. While it could benefit from a thorough pressure washing, it's not terrible cleanliness-wise. Seating is extremely limited at one bench for the whole station, but that's understandable for a 24 hour underground train stop. Monroe is not accessible, though there are up escalators. The station is also fairly easy to navigate. All this would equal a three star rating. The issue comes with the stairs in the winter. While they were salted, it seems the foot traffic has worn the salt out somewhat. While it wasn't a stair shaped hockey rink, I felt that the steps in winter were at times too slippery for comfort. More salt (or just "salt" more often) was called for.
