I have a meeting in the Loop today so I'm headed to the city on the express train which has very few stops. Not all of the trains are express only the ones during rush hour. You can purchase a monthly pass or round trip ticket. Since I do most of my work from home, I buy tickets as needed. My tickets today total a little under $7.50 round trip. For a comfortable and relaxing ride, hit the rail to the Loop!

The station's ticket window is closed most days and times but it is staffed during peak hours. I would love for the inside of the station to be open during the winter months even when there is not an attendant on staff. Also, often ridders need to be prepared to move across the tracks as the oncoming train is moving towards them because the platform is rarely announced beforehand. I tend to have this problem the most with the express trains. Great station overall!

Tickets can be purchased using cash or credit card- buy your before you board the train and spare yourself the $5 fee. You may purchase a one way, 10 ride , or weekend pass (for unlimited rides Saturday and Sunday) which is perfect for a busy weekend in Chicago! Students and Seniors can get half price tickets which you can purchase from the conductor or get several when you are at the downtown station. During rush hour, there are zone trains which makes the trip about 40 minutes downtown. Cheaper than driving and parking and VERY convenient!

It may seem that I should have simply stayed at the hotel at O'Hare, but blah, there is nothing to do out there. I'd much rather be in the city. Anyway, back to the story, I used the Metra to get to the conference. It is easy and smooth. I could relax, work, read or better yet, Yelp! while on the train. I have been told that you are allowed to bring alcohol on the train and drink while riding... I don't know if you are 'allowed' or nobody cares to care if you drink on the train. If anyone has an official ruling on this, please let me know...

I really like this Metra station and not for any Metra travel because every year Franklin Park has…read moreRailroad days and the station and area turns into a festival. There is a carnival, massive sound stage, beer tent, train displays, swap meet, food vendors, model railroad layout and miniature train rides. The station fills with rail fans of all ages to watch the trains with all real life rail operations cutting right through the festival. The fest last about a week but on one Saturday there is a line up of real trains/cars that you can walk on and walk through. Metra always a locomotive on display that the adults and children can walk through and sit at the controls for pictures. Metra and the village really put on a nice festival for a great family outing which is usually in early June. I will also stop by when the festival is not going on when in the area to do some Rail fanning because it is the lead into the big rail yard with lots of action.

It's a small Metra station that serves the Metra Electric line, which means it's one of those few that goes to Millennium Station, not Ogilvie or Union. The 111th Street Station is located in Zone C for Metra fare purposes. It's one of the least busy in the entire Metra system--apparently there are fewer than 50 people boarding here on average each day. Given its infrequent use, there aren't any services here; you won't find an agent, but on the other hand that means that if you have to buy your ticket on the train you won't pay a surcharge for buying it from the conductor. Parking isn't available for this station but there are CTA bus connections. Most unfortunately, this station is not at all accessible. There's 30+ steps to the platform, but you won't find an elevator here, I'm afraid, so if you need one you'd be better served by finding another station to use.

This station on the Metra Electric line is a bit dated but it is still one of the better stations…read moreat this end of the line. It is usually clean and it's convenient to the Olympia Fields Post Office, Olympia Fields Country Club, as well as several subdivisions. If you're a member of the country club, there's access to the club directly from the station; you can park on the club grounds instead of the Metra lot. This stop is perfect if you're staying downtown and you want to attend one of the many golf functions at the club without the hassle of driving. The parking lot is a decent size and it has more than one entrance/exit which helps the flow of traffic. As of this writing, parking is $1.25 paid at old fashioned pay boxes where you have to fold a dollar three times over to squeeze out into the narrow slot. There are no monthly passes available for parking. There are no ticket machines at this location either so you'll need to buy your ticket on the train. Once this station is remodeled to include some of the amenities available at other stations it will be the jewel of the south suburbs.

CTA has an L station on Western Avenue on the South Side, which is one of those along the Orange…read moreLine. It goes between The Loop and Midway. Of course it's not in a terrific location, but it's mostly clean and safe. Lots of busses to get onto from here. There's a large area for shelter while waiting for one. A better than expected location, and it's usually pretty fast coming or going. It serves the Orange Line. The station is located in Gage Park. Even though it has a bad history, it's still an improving area. This is at 49th and Western. Best about this is how fast it is to get through here. This is the one that goes all the way to Midway, the other Chicago airport that gets unappreciated. Getting there is a lot faster. Stops like this are one of the reasons. It has fewer, meaning the trains come a lot more often. This station is pretty clean for as busy as it gets, and it doesn't have a bad smell. Getting to Midway is convenient from here. It's only a few stops away, and if you're getting off here there's lots of busses to take you places. There's usually not a long wait for trains.
