She is also a master of cutting my toddlers hair while he is having a full blown meltdown. I visit Crystal every 4 months for a keratin treatment and a trim. The treatment she applies lasts longer than the usual treatments that I've had in the past. Not only is Crystal very skilled in her profession, she also has a great personality. When I arrived for an outdoor haircut, Crystal was prompt and thoughtful--she asked all of the right questions about styling. I have gotten my hair cut a few times here is the past year because I go to school in Ithaca and can't get to my regular salon frequently enough. Overall, I am satisfied with my experience with the salon. I have a very basic haircut, I have long straight hair and just some layers at the end, so I can't speak about the full range of skills they have. I like the location, it's in a converted house which is cute and the interior is well kept. A huge bonus after my first appointment was that the part time massage therapist offered me a free five minute shoulder rub after my appointment! I kept this to three stars because they charge for blow drying, a practice I have only ever seen in Spain. I also tried to get my eyelash extensions filled once and was initially really excited about the low cost of fills. They turned out to be very chunky, gross looking clumps of lashes that were loosely glued in groups of three that fell off within just a few days. It was much cheaper for a reason and I would not recommend that service. However, my friend and I both had our eyebrows waxed there and we were satisfied with the results. The clinicians paid attention to our specifications and were detail oriented. I will continue going to Crystal's while I'm in Ithaca. read more

Crystal is amazing. For 10 years she has always made me feel and look my best, and saved me from myself in my never ending quest to straighten my naturally curly hair. I went in two weeks ago on Tuesday for a Keratin straightening treatment and moved to south Florida on Thursday. Went through airport security with 3 bags, 2 kids and a stroller alone, installed 2 car seats curbside at the airport. Sweat like crazy in high humidity and my hair did not curl or frizz. I went one day as a walk in with my 5 year old who is biracial To get her hair done, cornrows or box braids, the young lady said she was the only one there and she didn't know how but someone the next day would. So the next day I call to make an appointment and the owner answers the phone. Crystal then goes on to tell me 'they don't do black people's hair because it hurts their hands and they can't do things for the rest of the day.' ummmmmm what!!!!!!!! Crystal's is a mediocre spa. a nice physical set up, but the services borderline on unprofessional. the experience left much to be desired. my pedicure itself was okay, but not a very relaxing experience. my facial was fair to poor, and I felt I paid a lot for a little facial scrubbing followed by some bizarre "energy healing" and "chakra visualization" that I did not realize was part of the package... next time I'll pay a bit more to go somewhere more upscale and professional. read more

I made an appointment for my daughter this past summer to get a perm. The word 'perm' in the context of a hair salon appointment means 'permanent wave/curl.' Period. It does not mean permanent coloring! This is how her session was recorded and booked. I dropped her at the salon, and returned in 90 minutes to find her sitting with aluminum strips in her hair. When I questioned this, everyone seemed amazed; at no point was the word color ever uttered with regard to this endeavor, only the word 'perm.' Enter Crystal, who proceeded to prattle on for 20 minutes about how my daughter's hair was too fine to 'perm' with the usual normal methods, but that she, Crystal, could do it for $100. Until she saw me in the doorway, this refugee from 1965 (judging from her silly wardrobe) was hard-selling a 12 year old on a $100 technique. Poor communication, excessive cost, and bad customer service = never going here again. Ever. Period. read more

I'm feeling a bit generous with 3 stars--but two felt a little harsh! I got my wedding hair done here and honestly LOVED it--got so many compliments on it and it stayed all night and so I couldn't be more happy about my personal hair experience. I think I had Jessica. My bridal party however had mixed reviews....a couple of the girls at the salon didn't seem to listen to what they wanted really, or didn't seem to have the skills to make the requests happen. My MOH had Jessica too, and loved her hair. So I guess Jessica is really the plus of the place. and the prices.....that's why I went there. For a large group it is more affordable if you're paying for them, but you sacrifice the feeling of a nicer salon and you can tell that a lot of the people aren't as experienced. read more

I booked a facial at Crystals having tried all the other spas in the Ithaca area and wanted to try this one. I requested an hour long deep pore facial with extractions. I walked into this establishment with clear skin and no inflammation. The woman who performed the facial began to do the extractions with no gloves on and hadn't even steamed my face yet...then in the middle of it, she decided to steam me as if she'd noticed she'd forgotten to do it. She did so for literally less than ONE minute with the device so close to my face that it burned. She broke open my skin in two places and I basically paid $85 dollars to this place to walk out of there looking like I just had a bad breakout. I spent all of my Sunday trying to soothe and repair the damage to my chin and my cheek. Extractions is a process that requires experience, and this woman, although super nice, didn't know what she was doing. Get your simple facials there as it doesn't require too much thought to smear creams and mud all over someone but dont expect anything more from this place. I'm super ticked off. I rebooked while I was there...but I think I'll cancel it at this point. I will not be returning. read more

Honestly I've never been to a better salon than Crystal's. I'm Asian and have coarse thick and very black hair but my stylist Jane got it to an amazing steel gray color that is to dye for. (haha) she even threw in a 50 dollar keratin treatment for free!! It took a bit of time but I finally got the color I wanted and service was fantastic. It took me a while to physically reach the salon being in the middle of nowhere but at the end of the day it was worth it! read more

I go to Crystal because she's Deva curl trained and does a really nice job with my corkscrew curls. She knows to cut it dry, doesn't use a blowdryer, etc. I really appreciate that she takes the time to learn all the latest on curly hair because I really think it makes a difference. It always ends up just a little bit shorter than I want it though. Once time they tried to push some kind of treatment and that made me uncomfortable. I also appreciate that they stock Deva curl products, but everytime I go out there it seems like they are out of what I need. I had a mani-pedi once and it was ok but not fantastic and it took forever. read more

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE whatever you do, do not go here for hair extensions. Biggest hair related mistake of my life, and spent hundreds of dollars for it. The bonds on the extensions were insane, they were HUGE, even as she was putting them in I noticed this and that they stuck out of the top layer of my naturally fine super straight hair, I asked her about them sticking out like that as she was doing them and she said something along the lines of Oh dont worry, they will relax and lay flat over time. The next day at work I did not wash my hair that day as advised, and braided it over night as advised, the extension hair looked like frizzy chemically damaged terrible hair and I felt like I had bonds sticking out of my hair at the top, so I took my cell phone and clicked a quick photo of the back of my head and nearly had a panic attack at what was going on back there....the entire top row of bonds were sticking through my hair and looked like huge ugly clumps of glue which is exactly what they were....I called a stylist all the way in Owego, NY to help me and sent her the photo, She could not believe how terrible the bonds looked either and said that I got bad hair extensions. She did advise though to not go to her for help if I was going to go back to the other stylist because sometimes they will not do work after they've been tampered with by someone else. I told her that I did not care and there was no way I was going to put the health of my hair in the hands of someone so obviously incapable and unaware of what they were doing AGAIN.... So I drove that night all the way to Owego where she took out some of the top row for me because I felt like a crazy bag lady walking around like that. I slowly and very very carefully took all the extensions out myself over the period of the next few weeks. I have learned that there are much better ways to do hair extensions than they did at this Salon, through knowing other people who got some and also talking to salons, however my experience here was SO BAD that I will never do it again. IT WAS AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE!!! I had a bad feeling about it before having them done and wish that I would have listened to my intuition. PLEASE BE WARNED! LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE! read more
