Absolutely stunning and magical! Like the other Cirque shows I have seen, this performance is (in a good way) sensory overload. The anthropomorphized street lamp makes a wonderful attempt at stealing the show; but the amazing acrobatics - both on the ice and aerial, hilarity of snowball fights and other such fun childhood games, and especially the deep raw emotion of the story is simply indescribable. (Upon reading other reviews, I'll attempt to describe the basic plot.) The story is that of a young girl, who is a dreamer and misunderstood by society, falling through the ice on a lake. As she is drowning, her life flashes for us to see - both her past and possible futures as seen through her imagination. She comes to understand new aspects of life, rejects her imminenet death, and fights her way back up through the ice in order to live the life she desires. All this is told in gorgeous skating, acrobatic, dancing, comedic, musical, and lighting effects as Cirque du Soleil is known for.

If you are looking for all the frills and twirls of a normal ice show - this is not it...this is better. Crystal is a brand new invigorating show by Cirque Du Soleil that is now touring across North America. This platform for Cirque Du Soleil is different than the traditional format of being under the Grand Chapiteau or in a standard arena format. Crystal by Cirque Du Soleil is a thrilling show that takes audiences to the ice. The show is about a girl named Crystal running away from reality to a world that seems too good to exist. ( I am not one to give away spoilers!) The one thing I love about Cirque Du Soleil is their creativity to always push the boundaries to make the impossible - possible. The music in this show is beautiful and fits the show perfectly. Cirque Du Soleil has always been known for the music they create as it is one of a kind. The skating is to a new level since they added acrobatics into the mix. The combination almost seems like it was always meant to be, as skaters perform flips on skates and acrobats fly through the air. I have two favorite acts from the show beginning with the swinging pendulums in the form of Chinese poles. Chinese poles is a hard act to perform by itself because of the hard grip it takes to have on the pole. Then you add the concept of swinging, which reminds you of the movement of a Russian Swing, (again, another act where you have to be very concise on your execution of tricks). I love this act because of the beginning of the scene with the maze of mirrors. My second favorite act is the hockey which is done the Cirque way. The scene executes x-sport caliber tricks with Cirque flare. There are some parts of the show where your mind wanders off a bit - unfortunately for me that is the straps act. It is romantic and is a beautiful act to see, however, nothing you have to see twice. Take a chance to see this fantastic ice show if it comes into your city - you will not regret it. Fun Fact: it is also the first time that Cirque Du Soleil has used cover songs in a show such as by Sia and Beyonce.

    Cool projections!

Crystal was the 15th different Cirque Du Soleil show that I have seen. While I was intrigued when I learned that there would be a Cirque show with ice skating I was a little hesitant as well. The last show that I saw that was 'outside of the box' of what you would expect from a Cirque show was Toruk, based on the movie Avatar, and I did not enjoy it. It strayed too far from what I enjoy about these shows (acrobatics, death-defying stunts, humor, incredible music, etc) in my opinion. Even though I was hesitant I thought that overall Crystal was a success. Another thing that made it apparent that this was a different type of Cirque production was that the show started with a video projection about the backstory. Another surprise was that not only were some of the songs in English, but there were pop songs as well. While I thought this worked I prefer the almost otherworldly soundtracks with made-up languages. It was interesting to see how they incorporated ice skating into the show. The most thrilling act was what I thought was going to be a typical Chinese poles act. It started like I expected but I was shocked when they started swinging the poles back and forth and then launching an artist into the air to have them land on a pad far away. I could see safety wires in other acts but I didn't spot them on this act. It was by far my favorite act. I was surprised how effectively the artists were able to do trapeze work while wearing ice skates. As much as I liked these acts there were some parts of the show that couldn't keep my attention. The worst was the part where everyone was seated in a group doing an extended bit where they were "typing" on invisible typewriters. Overall Crystal was an interesting look at a different side of Cirque.

This is my fourth Cirque Du Soleil show. I was skeptical that it would live up to the other three Cirques I saw in Vegas. Maybe it's because I had low expectations, or maybe it really is that good, but CRYSTAL is now my favorite Cirque show to date. The combination of visual effects with the dramatic lighting really sucks the audience into the show. And it's amazing how effectively a 3-person ensemble can pull off the explosive and dynamic music to accompany such a raucous occasion. As a cellist, I have to say, the violinist was exceptional. That's not to say that the keyboardist / accordionist and the saxophonist / clarinetist / guitarist weren't also amazing. If I have one criticism of the show, it is also probably one of the show's greatest strengths. This is an incredibly ambitious program. Ice skating is challenging enough, but doing it in this way probably demands more than just about anyone is prepared to do flawlessly. During the performance we saw (Phoenix, Arizona - 3/11/2018), there were a few slips and falls. Although it adds to the excitement in a macabre way, it also detracts from the finesse that the performers have worked so hard to achieve. I am not a big pop music fan, but hearing the deconstructed versions of Sia's Chandelier and Beyonce's Halos really lured me in. Had you told me those songs would feature in this show I would have been very skeptical. Luckily, I didn't know about it, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well the orchestrators and the music ensemble captured the true spirit of both songs, dare I say, even better than the original renditions. Some of the acrobatics were pretty amazing, and there are plenty of aerial acrobatics. At times, there was so much going on that it was hard to know where to look. If you go into the show with low expectations like I did, then you will probably be blown away. Sorry if I ruined that for you with my glowing review.

During my time with the company (two mainstage productions and one cabaret over about a year and a half), I saw a clear divide between the quality of the performances and the care for the people creating them. After I reported a more serious recent incident to members of leadership, it was deflected and ultimately ignored. In a follow-up call with a board member, he emphasized that their priority was "getting shows on stage," not addressing what happens between cast members offstage. That response made it clear that actor/performer safety and accountability are not treated as part of their responsibilities. From the outside, the organization looks polished and community-oriented. Inside, it lacks consistent, transparent leadership when harm occurs, and more troublingly, behind the curtain in rehearsals and offstage. The company prioritizes polished productions and familiar faces over genuine community. Long-standing contributors, especially skilled musicians or directors who have been around for years - also seem to operate without accountability. When serious issues arise, leadership's focus stays on keeping shows running and maintaining optics, not on addressing harm. This makes it difficult for newer members like myself to feel safe or valued. Connections at this theater stay surface-level because the culture doesn't encourage honesty or care beyond the stage. The theater's attention to sets, ticket sales, and production value is clear, but that same energy is rarely shown for the well-being of the people creating the work. New or prospective members/actors should be mindful of this culture and take care to understand how leadership handles concerns before committing their time energy, and talents here.
