High Quality & Healthy Options in Whiteville!…read more I stopped by Penn's Grill around 9:30 AM and had a wonderful experience. The atmosphere is calm and inviting with lovely local decor, and the staff is incredibly friendly. My waitress was very helpful in navigating the menu, which is surprisingly customizable. I ordered an egg white omelet with steak and cheese, and it was hands down the best-tasting egg white dish I've ever had--the seasoning was perfect! The steak was tender and juicy, and the homemade old-country style hashbrowns are a must-try. While the prices might seem a little high at first glance, the quality of the food absolutely justifies it. It's hard to find places in Whiteville that accommodate healthier breakfast options this well. Highly recommend!

Walking in, it raised many memories of my youth: not fancy or particularly clean (especially the restrooms) yet greeted by pleasant smiles, friendly servers & staff, always more important to me/us! Our server was quick with taking and returning with our drink orders. She followed with attention to the time we needed to decide on our orders. Further, she was one of only 2 servers of a completely full dining room! I'm so disappointed I didn't get her name...I just didn't want to interrupt her industrious focus. Each of the 4 of us ordered a brunch item: eggs, omelette, and waffle with either country ham, bacon, sausage and/or grits, and coffee, that my husband stated "was the BEST!" A disappointment I do have is the condition of the restroom. It neglects an opportunity to reflect the positive qualities of the "front of the house" yet, we would return to Waffle International if ever passing through again.

Pulling up to this place you can tell that this is visibly a hole in the wall restaurant. The outside looked tired (old) and is not appealing to customers. But, it was still busy, as this is cited as the "best breakfast" in Whiteville. That is undeniably subjective. When you walk in you will notice that most things look dirty (except your table). The floor is sticky, the bathrooms are dirty, and the paint on the wall is peeling. It is also dark on the inside (poor lighting). Our food took about an hour to get to our table. My waffle was actually great, meanwhile my eggs and bacon and all of my dad's food were cold. This is because our server left our food that came out first sitting instead of giving it to us, and waited for my waffle to come out. We would have rather had that food first while it was hot, and I would have been fine with getting my waffle afterwards. That was disappointing. What bumps it up to 2 starts instead of 1 is the service. Our server was nice, and frequently checked on ALL of her tables.

The service was nice, the atmosphere, "quaint". The food was very good--a welcomed relief from the so-called "organic". As expressed on the menu, the eggs are from "cage free" chickens--evident by the texture and taste. If you're an out-of-towner, or an another demographic you may standout--as much as the food does. A fine compliment to my wife from the host, "You look like Lencia Kebede from the Broadway play Wicked". REC & TLC

They had rice, Brunswick stew, peas, collard greens, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, baked chicken, fried chicken, breaded pork chops, macaroni and cheese, and fried pork rinds. Corn bread, and slices of cake ( red velvet, carrot, lemon, chocolate , are in a separate area.) I had a piece of the baked and the fried chicken. Both were salty, dried out tough, even though the place only opened 40 minutes before I got there. I liked the cornbread and the sweet potato. I chose this place based on its high yelp rating , leaving the interstate . It's the first time yelp failed me.

It was fast, good, and easy (not to mention inexpensive). Stay focused... I am talking about lunch. When you arrive, the parking lot might be full (it was when we arrived), almost always a good sign. You can grab a spot on the street or behind the now mostly defunct main street. When you walk in, you glove up and start serving yourself from the buffet. Someone will take your drink order (ours was taken as we were going through the line), then find a seat. I didn't know what fatback was, but I had already Googled it before we arrived, so I easily identified it. After one bite, I decided my dentist might become richer if I continued to try to chew it. The fried chicken was good but a bit salty. The fried pork chop was good as well, but I would have mistaken it for fried fish if I hadn't read the menu. Smoked sauage, yum. The biscuits looked good, but I took (and ate) the cornbread but would not have known what it was if I didn't have the cheat sheet. The salad bar was primarily lettuce. They had a few salad toppings, but the tongs were short and difficult to use. I suspect most people do not come here for salad. Oh, did I mention dessert? Huge cinnamon rolls and something chocolate with pudding and cookies. It fit the bill for what we were looking for.. a quick, inexpensive sit-down lunch.

All three times I went, my bill had overcharges that I only caught because I requested a printed receipt. Decent food for the price, but definitely ask for an itemized bill before you pay.
