So here I was sitting in my new flat in Glasgow, smug. Except the carpets were boggin. Hummin. So I got out the lovely Dyson and began to hoover. About half a second in, something small and round rolled across the floor, coming to an abrupt halt at the skirting board. "Hahaha" thinks me, "What is that?" Oh wait, it's the feckin wheel. One wheeled Dysons don't do the job. Off we toddle down to W. Crum & Sons to buy a new hoover. It's at the end of a fairly scary-looking row of shops at the eastern edge of Strathclyde uni's campus. In the windows prices are trumpeted in neon starbursts. It's a friendly wee shop, selling washing machines, cookers, hoovers, dishwashers and other such very boring but very necessary stuff. It specialises in repairs though, and it seems that is their main line of business. It is perhaps not as cheap as the likes of Argos, but I would rather spend an extra few quid if it's somewhere local. Especially when it's the letting agents' money and not mine. read more

W. Crum & Sons is a longstanding family business, situated on the corner of High Street on the edge of Merchant City, selling and repairing electrical home goods. I ventured in here when I was on the hunt for a washing machine for my new flat, as I realised how unpractical it would be to continue carting my washing around to my mum's forevermore, unfortunately. I was welcomed in by the owner who was friendly and knowledgeable about all of the electrical appliances and helped me pick out a nice white washing machine that was within my budget. It was delivered to my door the very next day, complete with a year's warranty. A great little locally owned business that prides itself on customer service and quality. read more

This family have saved me on two occasions now - once when the inside layer of glass from the oven door became unattached and once when the grill element blew. They can also fit some parts so fitted our grill element because I wouldn't have a clue what to do. They sell some accessories too and I bought a great stove-top kettle a couple of years ago that's still very much in use. The guy is so lovely and really knows his stuff. Can't recommend this place enough! read more

I was completely delighted with the service I received from Crum & Sons. My washing machine was acting up - the water wasn't draining properly, and the clothes were coming out with manky marks on them - worse than when they went in. We had a sneaking suspicion that it was the drain filter, but we didn't have the right tools and couldn't loosen it, despite my sister making admirable progress using a pair of kitchen tongs. I'd phoned Crum, told them the make and model, and what we thought might be wrong with it. The chap on the phone was really nice, and said they could get someone out to have a look in a few days. I was happy with that. When the chap arrived, he was great. Very friendly and got right down to it. He also struggled to loosen the bit (which made me happy as it confirmed that it wasn't us just being pathetic), and informed us that yes indeed, it was the drainage filter. It was all clogged up by colour catcher sheets - 4 of the pesky little blighters. I didn't know they could get in there! Anyway, turns out you should really put them into one of those nets for 'delicates' so that they don't make their way into the filter. Life lesson number 1. He confirmed that that was all that needed done, everything else seemed fine, and gave me some advice about washing machine maintenance. Another life lesson here folks - apparently if you're being all eco-friendly and doing your washings at 30 degrees, well that doesn't kill all the bacteria, which can then grow in your machine and gunk it up a bit. So washing your towels or sheets at 60 degrees, and occasionally doing a 90 degree wash is a good idea to keep your machine clean and bacteria free. The standard call out charge is £40, and parts are on top of that. We didn't need any parts, and I was happy to pay the £40 - I think that's a very reasonable price, and I was really happy with the service overall. I'd definitely use these guys again. More in the interests of reviewing than needing new electrical equipment, I engaged the staff in a discussion of the merits of certain brands and products- since Crum does repairs, they have a really good working knowledge of electrical products. Pretty quickly, my attitude to white goods (which used to be- what do they have in the local shop) was exposed. Crum is a storehouse of information, and explained why it was that my floors never quite got that freshly hoovered smell- and I won't be buying from a convenient store next time. Of course, I came away coveting a proper fridge, but Crum at least have a good range of affordable but excellent items. A relief to visit an electrical store not staffed by bored assistants with a straight line of learned patter. read more

W.crum & Sons, called them out as years ago they had a good reputation.. Sadly that No longer applies, 4 weeks the washing machine saga lasted, not once in the 4 weeks did they contact myself or my partner i continualy had to chase them for answers as to what the situation was with my machine.. continuously got fobbed off with silly excuses. And after having my machine so they could look further into it, i again had to chase them for them to tell me they couldnt fix it. Avoid using them, as nothing but hassle having to chase them, have family do washings for 4 weeks and would just have bought new machine and saved myself the hassle. read more
