Terrible food. I don't write negative reviews often, but this was not good. First, the fried…read morepickles we ordered as an appetizer came out burnt. They were in the fryer so long they were practically charred. The cole slaw seemed almost puréed. My wife ordered grilled chicken tenders. They came out fried and overly cooked. She thought at first bite that they were fish because of the taste. I ordered fish, so it is obvious that everything was fried in the same basket. And the grease/oil has needed to be changed for quite a while. My fish tasted bland and mostly if burnt oil. The fries were over saturated and tasted just like the bland fish. My mother ordered a tenderloin sandwich that also looked burnt to a crisp. Lesson learned here: order NOTHING that goes into a fryer. And apparently order nothing grilled, because it will get fried, too. The wait staff was brand new and was having some trouble figuring out our order. There didn't seem to be any shadowing or training happening. It took a long time for our main dishes to arrive. We did like the unique decor and overall appearance of the restaurant, but that's about the only thing I can give them credit for.

The menu included appetizers, soup, sandwiches, and several entree options. The restaurant is decorated as if you were in a cabin at the lake. The downside was there were no more than five other parties within the restaurant, and it still took over an hour to get our food. Refills were forgotten or not offered, and the food was good but not great. It wasn't what they had initially built their reputation on.

For years I have wanted to try Payne's since I have driven by the sign on the interstate so many…read moretimes. So glad I finally did. The restaurant was a lot more kitschy than I was expecting, which I loved. Our waitress had a wonderful energy. She was very knowledgeable about the menu. The menu had several unique items. I ordered a Scottish soda called IRN BRU. I love trying food and drinks from around the world. It tasted like an Orange Crush soda. Our waitress said they were known for their Cauliflower soup. It was cold outside so soup sounded perfect. I also got a pepper jack grilled cheese. The soup came in a huge bowl. The combo of the soup and grilled cheese was very filling. My friends ordered the sticky pudding. I had a bite and it was delicious. I cant believe it's taken me so long to eat here. I throughly enjoyed it and cant wait for my next road trip.

My wife and I were visiting the James Dean museum in Fairmont on a nice sunny Saturday. The owner…read moreof the museum (Lenny) suggested driving a few miles north to Payne's for lunch. It's a few minutes off the highway, but certainly doesn't feel like you're in Gas City, IN. It looks like they added on an outdoor space recently. Nothing too extravagant, but nice enough for lunch. A nice younger man took care of us on the patio. The menu was quite eclectic and unique. The tortilla chips and cold bean dip was a great way to start. Both our soups were fantastic....cheddar cheese for one and leek soup the other. Fish and chips hit the spot and apparently a fan favorite. My wife had the club sandwich of GF bread. Great little local spot if you're ever in the area.
