HOTEL: A former estate built to display wealth, converted into a hotel. The grounds are beautiful. The first floor rooms have the intended ostentatious display of ornate detail. It doesn't feel very Dutch... ROOM: The good: Room 205 has gorgeous large windows overlooking the pond and trees. The king size 4 poster bed has a comfortable mattress. There are two large wingback chairs so that a couple can easily relax with each other. The room is VERY large. The bad: Located on what seems to be an annex, room 205 is very tired. The theme is Indonesia/Asia, which is a nod to the Dutch colonial presence in Indonesia. Two of the four walls are painted a dark red. During the day this is not an issue, but at night the room is VERY dark as there is very little lighting. The top bedding is very warn and thus made me feel like I didn't want to touch it. BATHROOM: The WC is very dated and there is a persistent odor in the WC, which I also noticed in the bathrooms on the first floor. The bathroom had updated white tile in the shower and around the sink. BREAKFAST: Served in the modernized basement. Breakfast was delicious and there were many options: hard/soft boiled eggs, yogurt, fruit, fresh breads/rolls, cheeses, meats, hagelslag (breakfast chocolate sprinkles), muesli, etc. Very fresh and many options. My overall impression: this felt like an over-used, not-so-clean Bed & Breakfast, not a hotel.

The next day, we got a new room with excellent AC a view of the ocean and the sound of ocean waves to fall to sleep with at night. In response to the first day's AC issue, we were comp'd breakfast for all six mornings we were there... and, since we're talking about breakfast, let me tell you it is awesome! The spread of fresh meat, cheeses, eggs, salad, and baked goods is on par with what you would find at a Four Seasons in the US (with less posh). Oh, and don't get me started on the coffee maker that pumps out espresso, coffee and cappuccino with a perfect top of crema every time! I kinda got addicted to it. They miss the 5 star rating from me for one reason though: we had a "queen" room and it was just two twin beds pushed together. They weren't the nice, comfy, foam mattresses that I usually find in Europe but the type with springs, and the springs were old and had seen better days. And, since its two beds pushed together, there's always an extremely uncomfortable gap in the middle so, cuddlers beware--you're gonna both have to cuddle on a twin bed or fall into the crack! It is the only reason (and a major reason) I might not choose to stay here again.

The cancellation policy is very difficult to find AFTER ordering - also the selection for insurance is easy to miss. The cancellation policy is in Dutch and is untranslatable easily (on a non-edit pdf) unless you navigate to their main website (roompot) - I booked on the Qurios one. Anyway the main point is that the policy for such a short time between booking and cancelling is draconian and far too severe. They tell me that after 25 hours of booking, you'd lose 90%. A typical booking will be around 1000 Euro. I approached them in a friendly manner but was simply referred to another website. A second approach was curtly answered in the same way. The policy is grossly unreasonable. i.e to charge 90% cancellation within 10 days of ordering?? However, they would have done just the same after 2 days. Think about ordering a car, a shirt, anything in the UK. Would you expect to be liable for such a loss? It stinks. It's disgusting. What this informs is that Roompot only care about your money. I bought this holiday on more or less blind faith and simple belief in business ethics and reasonable trust. Then I get treated like I've met a SPIV or CONFIDENCE TRICKSTER. Also, there is a main road between you and the beach - this is not clear from their advertising. We used to come over to Belgium frequently until the Zeebrugge ferry ended. We love this part of Holland and will visit every year using the Newcastle to Amsterdam DFDS ferry. Great holiday - just choose another seaside lodge/cabin company.

The bar closes at midnight most nights, just after the local late shift working regulars come in for dinner. They are located roughly 4 km from Haarlem and 6 km from Amsterdam. Family run place that started out as a playground for kids in the 30s. There are 0 smoking rooms available, but two smoking rooms indoors. Also the vending machines sell Heineken if the bar is closed late night and there is a cozy lounge area without service that never closes. Lovely hotel

It does have a great vibe/atmosphere and was packed. Friendly, attentive, multi-language staff. Parking is very limited so you might have a few minutes walk.
