Located within the major harbour of Lyttelton, Cruise Port Lyttelton is a deep water port allowing very large cruise ships to dock landside, allowing easy disembarkation for passengers wishing to explore the area, specifically Christchurch. My brother and I came on the Ovation of the Seas on one of the last dockings of the season, and admired how well organized the process was, and how friendly the guides and advisors were.
We had come from Dunedin the previous day, and ship was able to dock by 07:00. The outdoor dock is large, with space for ship sponsored excursions to meet up very close. There are also two shuttles running: a free one to the nearby town of Lyttelton (5 minute trip) and a 20-25 minute drive to the city of Christchurch (costing $10 per person roundtrip, purchased onboard). We ended up taking both, and both were worth doing.
You are not allowed to exit the port on foot. There is wi-fi on the shuttle bus, but I found it to be not reliable. read more
