The Old Shipping Building is in the small town of "Akaroa", which is located on the "Banks Peninsula" in the Canterbury region of New Zealand.
Back in 1840, Akaroa became the first French settlement in New Zealand. The town soon became the main whaling port in the region.
After all these years, the town still maintained its character as a whaling town with its charming old homes and businesses along the waterfront.
The architectural design of the Old Shipping Building was quite unique and stood out amongst the rest of the buildings in town. The building was built in 1895 for the Union Steamship Company and is today one of New Zealand's finest & smallest example of an elaborate "Italianate Style" Building. What is so amazing is that the building looks like it has a stone facade but is totally made of wood ! It's timber was made to simulate stone. Amazing !
The Building has won many architectural restoration awards and was placed in New Zealand's "Historic Place "Act in 1980. The building may be small in size, but Is big in "History" ! As always "thanks" for reading !
