This family run habitat and tour was one of the highlights of our trip to NZ. Since it was the start of Winter, we booked the 4WD tour instead of the kayak option. Kevin and daughter Nest were wonderful hosts!
Prior to reaching the habitat, Kevin drove us around and we saw some beautiful sights of Akaroa and learned a lot about the history of the area, agriculture, and environment. Kevin is quite knowledgable and an absolute pleasure to be around!
After the driving tour, we arrived at the penguin habitat property and had lovely tea in the garden after feeding a few friendly sheep. Learning about the history of the habitat and the care that goes into preserving these adorable blue penguins was quite impressive and inspirational. The property is breathtaking. It's amazing how far these little penguins will travel to nest with their partners and the dangerous obstacles they endure along the way.
We were fortunate to see a couple of pairs of penguins in the cute little box houses made just for them. They are precious creatures and I think the world should be a bit grateful of the passion and hard work that goes into preserving them.
We found out that you can actually stay overnight in some cabins on the property and spend more time at the habitat. This would be a great option to see the penguins swimming in the cove and waddling up to find shelter.
I highly recommend this tour.
One thing to note, the tour runs out of Akaroa, an hour and a half out of Christchurch. There is a bus you can catch to Akaroa with perfect timing respective to the tour. The bus arrives about 1/2 before the tour starts (enough time to get a light lunch or snack). It picks you up at 4 p.m., right after the tour ends.
If I had figured out the logistics sooner, I would have stayed the night in town because the next day, we bussed back to Akaroa for the whale watching tour. Akaroa is a little waterside village that is not only quaint and charming, but packs in some good shopping and foodie spots! It would have been nice to spend a bit more time there. read more
