KiwiRail - Comfy seats. With complimentary earphones ready for you

What a great way to travel from Christchurch to Greymouth! The only challenge was that there was only one open air car for photography, and some folks basically parked themselves there, and had no intention of giving anyone else a turn at taking photos...since none of the other cars had windows that opened, we had the challenge of taking photos through glass...oh well...we were taking too many pictures anyway! For those interested in the mechanics of rail travel, there is an extremely long tunnel that required some fancy engineering to get trains through without asphyxiating the passengers. Never fear, they have it figured out! It involves an electric engine that they attach at Arthur's Pass, and some very fancy ventilation that they describe in the commentary. The cafe on board was quite good and the prices very reasonable! We had some delicious ice cream bars for around $4 NZD each.

Know that it is there for tourist traffic only but that's okay as they do it well. There is ongoing commentary about what you are seeing as well as some history along the way. The headphones are provided and a tone and screen let you know when the commentary is going to be beginning. But the best part about the train isnt it's comfortable seats or the snack bar on board where you can buy things, or even the clean restrooms. Nope. The highlight of this train are the two "open air cars" where you can basically stand outside to take some really fantastic photos of the passing landscape. Truly amazing but bring a sweater or coat as it is pretty chilly out there. I picked up the train in Greymouth so I went from west to east ending at the train station in Christchurch. They load your large luggage at the train station and you can carry on your smaller pieces. The ticket for a one way trip runs about $199 and takes about 4 hours. You go through tunnels, over bridges, across rivers and plains, and it really was a nice way to spend an afternoon. The train has plenty of room and even though it makes a couple of stops along the way to pick people up, it never got crowded. And be sure to ask at the station if it is running on time. It often has a few delays which should give you Plenty of timeto grab lunch in town before you board. A great way to see this amazing country and all the different vistas it offers!

Metro - At Christchurch Bus Interchange

I found the Metro to be easy to navigate and the driver was super nice. Much easier than Auckland for sure! Operated by the Canterbury Regional Council, the main bus service is known as Metro. It uses a proprietary debit card which of course is not compatible with any of the other NZ transport networks. Or you can buy your fare from the driver but it costs much more. The train from the airport to the CBD was clean, smooth and the onboard power outlet was most welcome. Easy to work out the timing for the next bus from the bus stop and where it's heading. Probably one of the most simple public transport companies I've dealt with in quite some time. [Review 362 of 2024 - 15 in New Zealand - 21395 overall]

On the other end is a bakery, a mini-mart, a sushi place, and an ice cream-bubble tea shop. There's an information office and some seating. There are four platforms (A, B, C, D). Find your bus on the big board and head towards the proper platform. The routes and bus bays will be announced. Buses are physically accessible. However, stops are NOT announced. The gondola and airport stops are apparent, but be sure to ask for the driver's assistance if you are unsure. A grocery store, coffee shops and restaurants are just across the street.

Air New Zealand - Checking in is SO EASY AND EFFICIENT

Efficient and professional…read more This was my first time using this airlines to travel to New Zealand, and it was excellent on my international flight to and from Honolulu, and domestic flights from Auckland to Queenstown, and Christchurch to Auckland. This is the only year-round direct flight to and from Honolulu and New Zealand, which is great. Though, I wish they have flights on Saturdays, so I have one more day of vacation! The flight attendants on both flights were friendly and professional. I purchased their Sky Couch seats (similar to the Couchii on ANA). I found these seats to be a little more spacious and more comfortable than the one on ANA. The entertainment had very clear screens for economy, and very easy to operate. Huge kudos to the pilot on both flights. The entire flight was SUPER smooth. The smoothest flight i've experienced. The take off was smooth, and the decent and landing was exceedingly smooth. My ears will always pop, but not this time, and could feel the tires just touch the runway. It was great! The domestic flights were as good as well. No one told me Queenstown has a super short runway, and crazy windy weather! Christchurch to Auckland was quite smooth though. The check in process was very easy with many kiosks, and clear signage. The staff at the airports and flight attendants were friendly and nice. I'll definitely play with Air New Zealand again! Kia Ora!
