I cannot recommend Kate Ellen and the team at Crown Nine enough! Her work is just gorgeous and the customer service is top tier. My partner and I got both our engagement and wedding rings from Crown Nine. We actually picked out our engagement rings in 2020 during the covid lockdown so we did all our communication and shopping through email and phone. I decided to get a custom Montana sapphire and Kate sourced 10 stones for me to choose from. She was so patient with me after I saw 5 stones and asked for another round of 5 to be sure I wanted the stone from the first round. After receiving our engagement rings they took mine back 3 times--free of charge (!)--and tweaked a few details I wanted changed since I wasn't able to try it on or look at it before receiving it because of the pandemic. He and I get SO MANY compliments on our rings and I love telling people who made them. A year later we came back for our wedding rings and the service was just as exceptional as before. We just had our ceremony last week and we're so happy with our rings. You will not regret purchasing from a local, small, woman owned, company that makes stunning work. I walked in looking for a birthday present for my wife, and Christina was kind enough to show me the wares. We looked at several pieces from local and out-of-state designers, but nothing quite caught my eye. Right when I was about to leave, she suggested a ring by a local San Francisco jeweler, with a "stone" made out of found abalone shell. It felt like the right one, so I bought it and my wife loved it. We still need to bring it in to exchange for sizing, but I'm hoping that will be as easy and painless as the search! Edit: Had to drop some stars when they charged for resizing. Sorry, but this should be part of the cost of the ring and was never disclosed during the sale. This is going to be kind of weird review, because I actually didn't purchase anything from Crown Nine, but I had to leave a review because if it wasn't for them I would never have found my dream wedding set! I had been to countless jewelry stores looking for something unique for my wedding set, and we stopped at Crown Nine and while their designs are lovely, it wasn't quite what I was looking for. Bummed and about to leave, the woman running the shop stopped me and asked what I was looking for exactly. She then proceeded to write out the names of 5 other jewelry stores in the bay area that might have what I was looking for. Low and behold the first one we visited (Zaver & Mor) had EXACTLY what I had been searching for! I could not believe it. While I didn't purchase anything from Crown Nine I have to say that the customer service was incredible. She cared more about helping me find what I was looking for, even if it wasn't from her. You don't see customer service like that very often these days, and I just had to give that some recognition. I'm looking forward to an occasion when I can purchase something from them! I work just above Crown Nine in the Old Oakland neighborhood. My partner and I were excited to support the neighborhood. She made us an engagement ring, but the aftermath was far from positive. We tried to speak to Kate in person, hoping to understand her point of view. Unfortunately, she refused to see us. So now, it seems most important is to simply share our experience. This is from my point of view. 4 days after I received my engagement ring in a very sweet and memorable proposal, my diamond broke off my ring. I noticed a crack where the setting met the band. Thinking it was "probably still very sturdy, but I should check," I put light pressure on the setting, and the diamond (& setting) popped off. I'm so thankful this happened in my hand - the diamond belonged to my great grandmother, and it's over 100 years old. I don't like to think about what would have happened had I not noticed that crack. While Kate offered to fix the ring, she did not give an apology nor a refund (nor a partial refund when asked). She offered us 30% off our wedding bands. As you can imagine, our confidence in her craftsmanship was compromised, and we decided to see another jeweler (Sarah Swell in Sausalito, who I couldn't recommend more) for a new engagement ring, and for our wedding bands. What has made our experience with Kate a bit more twisted is that she turned her "Congrats Mickey + Brittany" Instagram post into an ad for the ring. She now sells the same design, for a fraction of the $2,000+ we paid for her to custom design a ring for us. I 100% understand we do not own the ring design she made for us. However, I was left both angry and very sad to have discovered this on Instagram. We've created a new engagement ring story for ourselves, and have found gratitude for the experience. I've never been more proud to be an Old Oaklander than I was this weekend discovering the new popuphood on 9th and Broadway. And of all six of the (amazingly awesome) shops/galleries I visited, Crown Nine really shined for me. One of the owners/jewelers, Kate, was so warm and down-to-earth, it was clear that she is dedicated to pumping some retail blood and a new sense of community in this neighborhood. She gushed about having discovered hand wrought nails from the 19th century in the ceiling boards as she was hanging her track lighting, and she said a local historian is investigating into the story behind this building - how cool! On top of that, the selection and curation of the goods offered at Crown Nine are splurge-worthy. From handmade cards to local t-shirts, fabulous hand clutches to deliciously scented candles (by one of my favorites, TypeLites!), and OF COURSE, gorgeous jewelry by Kate and others! The ambiance is clean, laid-back and spacious, so you feel welcomed and free to wander. They've also put QR codes on all the artists' wall tags, so if you want to know more about them, a quick scan with a smart phone will take you to a web page with their details. The shop is tucked away from the front side of 9th street, so it may be easy to pass by, but it is well worth further inspection! read more

Great jewelry, cute store. Good for gifts & a treat for yourself. My only wish is that things were priced. If I'm browsing, it's a pain to have to ask for every single thing I'm looking at. There are ranges that are so large it's hard to tell if what you like is in your budget. I'd much prefer price tags rather than discussing price. Maybe I'm old-fashioned but I'd rather talk about other things then how much everything costs. It's to me part of the pleasure of shopping to have access to this information easily. read more

Did not end up going with Crown Nine but had a consultation with Kate Ellen regarding a custom engagement ring. I feel compelled to write about the experience. After listening to and looking at some examples of our stylistic direction, Kate calmly explained her view on how matching our tastes with the artistic direction of the jeweler is a key component to ensuring we are happy with the outcome. Makes sense, of course, but we are new to this ball game and so appreciated the professional advice. Kate followed up after our meeting with a detailed overview describing what she her our stylistic direction to be and which jewelers she thought would be a good match for us. We were overall so impressed with Kate's professionalism, warmness, honesty, and genuine interest in helping get us on the right path for our custom design! And she nailed it: the jeweler that first came to mind for her is now the one we have decided to work with. Engagement ring aside, we do love Kate's work so will definitely be back. read more

In an alley way, a little sign on ninth showing the way. I guess it's a jewelry shop but its much more than that. There's a small spattering of clothes and accessories, paper goods and art. I ended up finding a cute hand printed tea towel for my friend's christmas present, so cute, it had a print of strawberries and rolled up in a little green strawberry basket. There's a broad price range in this place. It may take a bit of perusing but you can eventually find a few options within a lower price budget. Thumbs up this place is cool. This rating has been a long time coming. We bought my husband's wedding band here and we absolutely love it! It's unique and feels great to have supported a local shop. Just about every Christmas since our wedding my husband will get me something from there and I have never been disappointed! Kate is very warm and friendly and doesn't pressure you to buy at all. Also one time a necklace that I bought there fell off the chain. I tried doing a patch job on it but it kept falling off. I took it in and in a flash it was good as new. Crown Nine is more than just a fabulous new jewelry store in downtown Oakland that sells really unique, fashionable & highly desirable jewelry - they also offer jewelry making workshops. Specializing in metals not beads. My friend & I signed up for the Mitsuro Wax class together and it was some seriously good bonding time. The class size was nice & small, [about 7 total] so we all got one on one time with the teacher, Kate Ellen. The price of the workshop was pretty reasonable & included material costs. Most workshops here cost less than $100! We were guaranteed to complete a ring by the end of the class so we'd have something to show for our hard work. We actually made a bunch of ring mock-ups in wax & at the end of the class, we each selected one piece that would be sent out for casting in silver. How cool is that? Any day now I am going to have a one of a kind silver ring designed by me : ) The mission here is to offer jewelry making classes that are affordable & not too complicated. Anyone who is interested in jewelry making can try it out, enjoy the creative process & go home with an original design. I really like this place a lot and plan to take more classes in the future. People really need to support these gals because it's one of the best new additions to the Oakland art scene. read more

I couldn't possibly recommend Crown Nine more highly. Kate and her team are not only creative geniuses, but they are so kind, understanding, and helpful. My journey with them started last year when my then-boyfriend and I went to look at possible engagement rings, and having an appointment just for us and Kate to discuss the options felt intimate and special. Being quite clumsy, I of course knocked the stone loose from its setting almost as soon as I got my beautiful engagement ring, and the Crown Nine team fixed it very quickly, and cleaned it too. When it came time for my fiance and I to choose our wedding bands, of course there was only one place we'd go! We had a virtual appointment to discuss what we were interested in, and customized a couple of the options offered in Crown Nine's Vow collection. Kate was so attentive and thorough, which made picking the rings so much easier, even in these weird times. My husband and I married in a tiny ceremony earlier in November and are obsessed with our beautiful rings; I plan to go to Crown Nine for all my jewelry needs. It is surprising I haven't left a review for Crown Nine yet! Maybe because I want to keep my unique pieces to myself. :) I have been stopping in since they opened as part of Popup Hood 5 years ago! I've picked up a few items each year, as nice splurges for myself. What I love: Kate offers lots of accessible, unique jewelry and the team is super friendly. There are lots of jewelry stores all over town that feel pretty snooty to me, and this isn't one of them. Additionally, there are a lot of "hipster-ish" jewelry stores around town that don't seem to have jewelry that is particularly well made. Here you get the benefit of having artisan jewelry that feels like someone dedicated to their craft made it - not someone doing an experiment to supplement their day job. I end up wearing stuff I have purchased from here 3-4 days a week and receive compliments all the time. The baubles stocked at Crown Nine make a statement, as loud or as subtle as you'd like. Lots of pieces are limited edition or small run so you don't have to feel like everyone has your stuff. She also stocks repeat collections from many artists, so you can stick to a theme if you like. Crown Nine also has a lot of great events - trunk shows, showcases and more so get on the list. Stop in, and look out, you may get sucked in by all the sparkly (and matte) eye candy. read more

Have seen this shop from its start by Kate, and it's where a milestone diamond ring and my engagement ring came from, in addition to most of my favorite everyday pieces on rotation. The annual Plaid Friday trunk sale deals the day after Thanksgiving are so good they are worth planning to be in town for, and SO appreciated! read more

We loved Kate Ellen's work, the aesthetic and the store and her approach to sourcing responsible stones. I was super excited to commission her and her team to make our custom engagement ring. I thought long and hard before posting this review, as I really wanted to understand the disaster that happened next, beforehand. But I want to alert people, that this might not be the place for custom wedding / engagement projects. Buy off the shelf instead or find a more professional studio. Once we had a design, we scheduled some appointments to pick out stones. They were flexible with times, but once there, we kinda got a vibe that she'd rather be somewhere else, not super welcoming. The stones weren't what we originally asked for, so we asked if we could see others. As she has to request them first, she charged us $50 to see others (!) This was after we'd already spent a fair amount buying wedding bands and the deposit. First alarm. We picked out the stones, which were great, and had the final design ready. Kate Ellen sent a quote to my fiancé (now husband) and he, being a numbers guy and used to commissioning design work, asked for a breakdown of the tax % on the design charges. The next response we had was that Kate Ellen wouldn't work with us any more and we should go somewhere else. This was after we'd invested almost 2 months in making appointments, the design, choosing stones (they wouldn't sell us them) and spent money on wedding bands, deposit etc. I really, really wanted to understand what had gone wrong. We were not only deeply disappointed, but this such a special occasion for us (like any couple) and we now had this really bad vibe about everything. Not cool. I asked to meet her to find out. Still a mystery - all I got was that our 'business style wasn't a good fit.' She did kindly offer to refund the wedding bands if we wanted, but by that point we'd already married (with a borrowed engagement ring) and had our friends bless the rings so we moved on. But the whole experience left us disappointed, confused and a little frustrated. I feel like there is a vibe among the Bay maker community that "I'm an artist, this is my craft and I don't talk money as it devalues my work etc." We get that, but at the end of the day you are running a business, providing a professional service to paying clients and should be able to give more consideration for customer service. Don't lose it if people ask for breakdown of charges. Instead, politely refuse. It's okay. And, above all if you're a wedding jeweler, understand the emotional consequences for the client when you drop a ring project 2 months in at the last minute. Finally, if you don't like to do custom work, don't offer it. The good news and happy end to this tale is we found Rebecca Overmann in SF, who was professional, warm, expert and has created a beautiful piece. All's well, that ends well. Pretty curated shops can be kind of intimidating when you've gotten used to leisurely online shopping, but not this one. Kate, the jewelery design who opened the shop, and showcases work from other local designers, is sweet and friendly. She told my boyfriend and me the stories behind much of the wares. When we came in again, she remembered us by name. It's this attention to detail that makes this store really special. I love Crown Nine and all the jewelry in this shop. They are really one of a kind pieces, but by far my favorite jewelry is made by the owner Kate Ellen. She is warm, friendly and so knowledgeable about the artists she carries in her store. She can help anyone find the "right" piece, whether it is a gift or for yourself. She also has a good selection in different price ranges. There is no "hard sell" at this shop, which is nice. She also has a return policy that is unheard of in small boutiques. Such an awesome spot with such great people. This is the kind of jewelry store I wish I'd found before we bought my wife's wedding ring. Beautiful pieces, exceptionally unique. The kicker: we were talking with Kate about this that and the other thing, got to mentioning a gold/diamond necklace of my wife's that was knotted up in three places. Told me to bring it in. They not only unknotted the piece, but did it for free. I can't think of another jewelry store I could walk into, cold, and get such great vibes - and then such friendly and open service. I visited this store today because someone from a near by restaurant said they had nice jewelry. Well, I walk in and the lady barley greeted me let alone had eye contact with me. She was "extra" busy on her iPad to engage a potential customer. She NOT once asked me if I needed help, if I was looking for anything, if I've ever been to the store or anything. I must say it was a very cold and uncomfortable experience. I tried to get her attention or see if she would engage a customer by asking questions but her answer were dry like she didn't have time for me. I was a bothered honestly, it was NO one else in the store so she could have shown some attention to me as a customer. I asked her if she owned the store and her reply was "no, I just run the downstairs". She shouldn't be running the downstairs if she can't be friendly. I honestly left feeling like I didn't fit the mold of their customer base so that's why she could careless about interacting with me. I will never go back to this store again. read more
