Oh, hell no. Crown isn't just tacky. It isn't just full of bogans. It isn't just sterile and antiseptic and soulless. It's actually, properly evil. It's maths designed to lull optimists into paying their money for no reason. It's architecture designed to trap and imprison you, to stop you getting out or even knowing what actual time it is. It's paid-for political power designed to stop pokies legislation applying to them. It's exits which are hidden, or which lead straight onto freeways. It's flaming jets of gas. Okay, the last part's kind of cool. Still, not a fan, not a friend, not upset if they went bust tomorrow.

If you're absolutely dying for some fun somewhere out of Sydney, a quick trip to Australia's second best city of Melbourne (hehe) is perfect for that little bit of a pick me up that you need. You're less likely to bump into people here and can have a hand (or two or three) at the blackjack tables to double, treble, or quadruple your hard earned. There are 350 table games to choose from or that electronic version of roulette if you're feeling particularly anti-social. The Star in Sydney just doesn't quite cut it compared to the Crown. It is after all, the most famous casino in Australia. The place holds enough poker machines (2500 of them) to leave you square-eyed, but there's always a bar nearby to help relax those tired eye muscles. It's actually the biggest complex in the Southern Hemisphere, covering around 2 entire city blocks. Best to join up for their signature rewards program - sign up is instantaneous, free and you can earn points for every dollar you spend within the complex (this includes shopping, eating and gambling anywhere within the entire Crown Entertainment Complex). You'll get a free card with your membership, and a $5 voucher to get you started!

It's a pretty site at night. Such a pretty pretty site. At a closer glance it is starting to show its age, even though it was just renovated I believe recently... I guess some gamblers get some foot traffic in the door. It's a pretty entertaining place with some fancy pants restaurants on the bottom esplanady level along with a pretty nice food court. What is with all the smokers though on the balcony? We went to see the light show on the hour, but all we could see were smokers jammed on the viewing deck so we headed back in. There are a few nice bars throughout which play different music, overall a very entertaining experience.

Lonely at 6.45 pm no happy hour here

Crown Casino is a hub of activity that you have to experience if you spend a lot of time in Melbourne. It's pretty much got a world of entertainment for the aspiring hedonist. 3 world class hotels, over 30 bars, nightclubs, over 40 restaurants and cafes, cinema, bowling alley, designer shopping (Louis Vuitton, Versace, Burberry and Prada) and of course the casino, are just an indication of what we are talking about. In terms of gambling, Crown Casino is pretty much the only casino of any size in Melbourne. If you are a card player you can gamble 24-7 and the poker room downstairs gets extremely busy. In general, the standard of the poker players is very good with a host of regulars. On a Friday/Saturday night you can these guys waiting to take advantage of the drunk fish in the corner. I find that the pub poker competitions around the city to be really annoying, so if you want to find a proper card game in Melbourne, I don't know anywhere better than Crown Casino. The variety of people at Crown is always fun for people watching too.

I have a love/ hate relationship with the Casino. Its a world class entertainment complex, right in the heart of Melbourne and offers such variety that draws me there regularly. So I really shouldnt hate it all right? Here's what i love about the Casino: -The beauty of the fountain room -The opulence of the grand ballrooms and event spaces -The wonderful shows that are held here every weekend -The fun times I've had dancing the night away at one of the nightclubs -The world class restaurants that add to Melbourne's dining culture -The iconic flame torches that light the banks of the yara river, and illuminate the city skyline And here's what I hate: - The teenagers roaming around, looking for trouble - The parents I see dragging their kids around at ridiculous times of the night -The crowd that hits the McDonalds food court at 3am in the morning ( though thats probably my own fault for staying so late) -Trying to park in the evening on a weekend - The trashed party girls with their heels off stumbling out of clubs and bars in the wee hours, along with guys just looking for a fight. Personally, I think the good out weighs the bad here, though they could definitely do with cleaning up their act in the late evening.

I don't gamble, so take this review with that grain of salt. Crown is full of jingly, jangly, colourful machines that have people sitting in front of them looking mesmorised. It also has all the other accoutrement associated with gambling which I have to assume makes people who wish to part with their money happy. Crown is in a great location, has lots of dining and entertainment options and hosts a super-expensive hotel that generally accommodates visiting celebs. It aint Vegas, but I have been known to have a fun night here in years gone by.

Undergoing re-developments amidst organised chaos may be a good thing for this establishment; although the energy here is quite heavy. If gambling is your thing; come here - otherwise coming here occasionally to eat out or have a drink or two away from the CBD is occasionally a good thing: only in moderation, not too often. It's too big an establishment. It is great that Crown Melbourne exists, as it contributes to the Victorian (yet Australia's economy overall) significantly, and it is good to support that sometimes. And it is good that this casino pays a significant tax on patrons losing bets that funds community initiatives (back into the community) such as Melbourne's free city circle tram for instance. Some beautiful, striking ambience of opulence with adequate security staff for everyone's enjoyment. It is evident that this establishment spends a lot of money on their interiors more so than their exteriors; and the chandeliers in the main gaming area have stood the test of time since this facility opened in around 1997. Popular among locals and visitors alike. There is too much choice, and sometimes you have to argue whether or not this is always a good thing. Open 24 hours a day seven days a week. I love it and I hate it at the same time.

    One of the many bars.

As soon as you walk in here you can smell money , and what a smell it is. From the time you enter the main foyer . Where the Lamborghini's and Ferraris, Porches, etc , etc are , you know you are in for a treat, saw a Rolex for $380.000 , my partner saw a Louis Vuitton hand bag for $ 1000 . Oh well back to reality , BTW I didn't have a bet .

It is a huge complex, covering a couple blocks, and has a little of everything for everybody. Casinos, Food courts and fine restaurants, Moderate to high-priced shops. Lots of entertainment including cinemas and shows. We had dinner at DiFranseco, an Italian restaurant in this huge Crown Promenade center. Food was very good. I had their Barramundi fish, which was the best on this trip. My wife had Riscotto. Of course, we had plenty of appetizers, liquors, and a chocolate and a Tiramisu dessert. All was very good. Crowne Promenade is a very good hotel. The only thing we found was that our room, for whatever reason, does NOT have a phone charging cable. We even talked to the manager, who confirmed, and said our own choices were to buy or rent one. That's no help. You'd think that a phone charging cable would be standard at a hotel like this. It's the same ole, same ole breakfast that hotels serve - Boring! Having said this, we did encounter a situation that was unique and it had never occurred to us before. My wife left her reading glasses in the room - on the day that we flew from Melbourne to New Zealand! We had our tour guide, 'C'. interface and try to have the glasses sent back to our home in the States, figuring that it would be chaotic to try and have it sent to one of our hotels in NZ. I'm only reporting what I was told by 'C'. I don't know what the delay was but 'C' said the hotel "would look into it." It took 24 hours before we got a response, which I thought "Why does it take that long to 'look into it'"? Anyway, there might be some mixup somewhere, as 'C' said it would cost me $29 (AUS) to have it shipped. I understand that part of it, and thought that this is very reasonable, considering it needs to be packaged so it doesn't break during transit. It would be another 8 days before we got home. After we got home, it took almost another week for the glasses to arrive - and what was strange: There's an Import tax of $25 (US) on it! HUH? It was NOT made in Australia, nor did I buy it there, so ... why is there an Import Tax?? I was told by 'C' - that's the way Australia is and even he is confused by some of the rules sometimes. In either case, we're glad that Crown Promenade got the glasses to us, very nicely packaged protectively in a plastic case that was enclosed in quite a bit of bubble=wrap. WHEW! Thank You!
