This is specifically for the Poker room. This was a very nice, big room. I took the game that was available with no list and that was $1/$2 turbo. It was a $100 max buyin. The turbo means that if the dealer feels like you're taking too long on the hand, they'll count down and you only have 15 seconds to act. This rarely came up and it just played like a normal game. Tipping is not allowed and there aren't free drinks either. The only improvement I'd suggest is chargers at the table. read more

It's not quite Vegas, it's not as bad as Reno. The room was large and comfortable, but you really aren't in the middle of the action in Melbourne. Getting around this giant complex is daunting, it's similar to Vegas where you think everything is around the corner and instead you've got a walk a mile through slot machines to get anywhere. The gym was fantastic, great views and the pool looked a-maaazing (in my best Aussie accent). Breakfast/brunch was particularly disappointing, even though Gordon Ramsey lends his name to the restaurant that didn't prevent this one from being quite bad. Only rating the table games: As an American gambling in Australia, playing here could be a frustrating and confusing experience. For starters, a lot of people piggyback on your bet. To me, it's an annoying trend, especially when people who don't know how to play blackjack comment on why you hit on 15 against a 10 and bust. If you don't like my decisions, make your own decisions! And I absolutely hate that in blackjack, they allow people to bet on other people's "perfect pair". Why should other people get to benefit on a sidebet on my own cards that I'm not even a part of?? And there's no variety in their blackjack games. All the blackjack games are 6 decks, with every deck shuffled back in. The whole point is to make counting cards pointless, but this type of play the player at such a disadvantage that it's actually RARE for Vegas to have this type of game. Another annoying point is that drinks aren't free for gamblers. They're already placing gamblers at such a huge disadvantage in their games, and now, really?? Gonna charge me $10-11AUD for drinks while I gamble? Even Vegas isn't so blatantly money-grubbing as this hotel. Finally, my last complaint is that they limit certain games to certain VIP players. I have to be Crown Silver to play pai gow? The ridiculous senselessness of this limitation is so mind-boggling dumb that I just can't understand the rhyme or reason for it. It's a pretty site at night. Such a pretty pretty site. At a closer glance it is starting to show its age, even though it was just renovated I believe recently... I guess some gamblers get some foot traffic in the door. It's a pretty entertaining place with some fancy pants restaurants on the bottom esplanady level along with a pretty nice food court. What is with all the smokers though on the balcony? We went to see the light show on the hour, but all we could see were smokers jammed on the viewing deck so we headed back in. Actually, all the local sports clubs have gaming machines ("Pokies" or Video Poker machines) in them, and they are everywhere! So legalized gambling is pretty ubiquitous down under. The Crown is a Vegas Mega-resort wannabe, but i would put it more on the Reno scale. Large, nice, but not like Macau or Vegas. Maybe Atlantic City. And Aussies have different tastes in gaming. They love their Pokies, this is well established, and you can find them everywhere, like slot machines in Nevada. But table games? Well they like their roulette, and the habit here is that they hand out roulette cards, so you can track the numbers on every spin of the wheel. Other table games? I had $100 on each hard way at the peak. And when the Yank finally crapped out, I walked off with $7,000! I was wondering if someone was watching me and was going to follow me out to the parking lot. Or if it was too close to $10,000 that I would have to declare it on my customs form, or get caught for money laundering. It's large but badly needs a lot of money spent on it to bring it near a luxury casino that it claims to be. We booked out Studio 3 (see link above) and it really surpassed expectations. Had reception area for a cocktail hour at the beginning of the night, with huge windows over the Yarra. Then moved inside for a beautifully lit room, and stellar dinner. Started with lovely cheese canapés, then had the lamb and chcicken main course, coated witha parmesan dukkah and some creamy smashed potatoes. The dessert was absolutely decadent, with rich chocolate tarts and luscious fresh whipped cream. Wine glasses were rarely empty and service was attention without being intrusive. Setup and takedown was easy with the help of the staff also, and for the money it was expensive yet seamless. Studio 3 also is double height inside, with a great balcony insdie, and double story windows all along the back wall to watch the sunset all evening, and the fire cannons blasting off regularly during our event. The flashing lights, the hushed quietness of it all apart from the pokie machines it all makes me want to turn back around into the daylight. But that's just me. Other people quite like it and it's hard to deny the entire complex is quite well planned and executed. The gaming floor is huge, there's a big screen for sport in the middle of the games floor, there is plenty of choice for restuarants, there's a cineman and the area leading to the ballroom is jaw-droppingly elegant. It's located in one of the best spots in town too, right on the river and there's people everywhere 24/7. I'm not a real fan of casinos in general and this has a lot to do with the fact that I don't gamble so I will abstain from reviewing the Casino per se. Other than that, I quite like Crown actually. It has a bit of everything - shops (FCUK, Witchery, Witcheryman, Politix, Chocolate Box etc and loads more upstairs), restaurant (Cafe Greco, Lucky Chan which is quite nice, Pub @ Crown etc). Of course, there's Village Cinemas which used to be my local when I was based in Southbank. If you are looking for a bit of fun, you'll enjoy Kingpin and the arcade on the lower ground floor. I still remember when I was still at Uni and living in the burbs, my mates and I would always hang out at Crown - dinner in the city, then a movie at Village and drinks at Barcode until the early hours - good times. However, we've grown out of it now which is fair enough. As a regular to there crown precinct I always enjoy visiting it. I don't always win but that's how it goes. With lots of pokie machines to choose from, tons of tables or automated games you will find something to try your luck at. If you sign up as a signature member you get benefits like free parking and bonus credits. I take advantage of the parking whenever I visit the city as it is close to teams to go wherever you want and it is cheaper than most city carparks. If gambling is not your thing then try one of the restaurants or some shopping. You will be impressed with both. For something more laid back they have bowling, an amusement arcade or my favorite the Gold Class cinemas. Excellent place for dinner, Crown has some of Melbourne's best restaurants lined up along the Yarra with stunning city views. All three hotels are extremely comfortable - Crown Prom is probably by favourite (4.5star), but the new Metropol (5) and Towers (5) are where celebs usually stay when in town (including Tom Cruise, Kim Kardash, Oprah etc). The Atrium bar is great, situated at the bottom of the stairs at the main entrance, there is almost always a musician playing, and the cocktails are excellent. read more

I actually wish I could give this place half a star, after years of going to crown casino. This weekend I was disappointed by a terrible experience. I haven't been in about 6 months and I come back to see the standards there are gone. They let anyone in looking like complete scum. I was at the outside Lumia bar and was buying a round. It literally took 20 minutes to nearly get served. When it was my turn the bar tender went on to serve the guy next to me, I then said it was my turn and then the bar tender said nah, the guy next to backed me up and even then the bar tender kept serving the guy next to me. Then I insisted and I was told 'wait your turn mate' by the unbelievably rude bar tender. Rude mid 30's tall guy that shouldn't be in customer service at all.. I then just left before I lost my temper then every single bar throughout the casino was under staffed and there was a ridiculously long wait everywhere.
