Warning: The Royal Melbourne Show takes place during school holidays, so it will be crowded. Plan your day, either go in the morning and leave around 2-4pm or go in the afternoon and stay for the fireworks. Don't be silly and spend the entire day here, the shows repeat themselves for this reason, so you won't be missing anything.
The only reason I went this year, was because I had free tickets. I wanted to get the full experience, the first time I went (three years ago) was all a crowded blur to me. So, as recommended we made sure to time ourselves and catch some of the shows. W saw the sheep shearing, the wood chopping, the motor cross and left right before the crowd from the after fireworks. We missed the other ones like the Milking Barn, the daredevils and sway pole thrill show.
There was plenty to choose from when it came to food. They transformed the MasterChef building into the Winning Tastes Pavillion- but it was too crowded to enjoy. Zumbo had a pop up dessert bar, the tarts were so sweet, we should've split something between the two of us to keep us in a sugar check. We ate at the Winning Tastes Courtyard, with food trucks from Burnt City Smokers and Willy's World Famous Fried Chicken and BBQ.
Hands down, my favorite part of the show was the animal nursery. For $2, you get a cup of feed and can take your time petting the sheep and lamb and goats with chickens running around, and walk around to see the baby ducklings and baby pigs and baby chicks. The dog show was neat as well.
I also enjoyed the Spotlight Makers Pavillion- to see the cake creations and winning photography. It was fun watching the carnival rides twirl swaying ride goers up in the air and screaming as they went up and came down. There are no shortage of rides, but any sensible person has to be smart at the show. If you aren't careful, this show will take all of your money in one day easy. With entrance, food, rides, and show bags, it does add up, and quick.
Pro-tips: some show bags do sell out for the day. Richmond was up for the AFL Grand Final this year, low and behold, their show bag sold out.
And on a good note: this show is brought to Melbourne by the RASV. Most aren't aware, but the show provides farmers, growers, and producers with an important opportunity to showcase their produce and connect directly with the community. Bringing country aspects to the city of Melbourne. read more
