Dan will not follow through on his promise, sends unqualified people to do jobs and does not take responsibility for his actions. As a result, I now I have additional property damage that will cost more money to fix as well as the aggravation that comes with all of this.
I asked for someone who could inspect and adjust a torsion spring plus install a new garage door opener. Why? Because the motor on the old GDO died and it was very likely due to an unbalanced door. Can anyone guess what would happen to a new opener if it's installed on an unbalanced door? The answer is you're likely to be in the market for a replacement sooner rather than later because it will be overworked when opening/closing the door. Only adjusting the torsion springs would avoid this kind of problem.
So here's how Dan & Crown Construction went "above and beyond" to take care of me:
1. He sent a carpenter to do the job. Of course i didn't actually know he was a carpenter until Dan disclosed that to me. More on that a little later.
2. He arrived at 4:30 pm when appointment was at 11 am.
3. The guy didn't have the right tools for the job (shocker!)
4. He took almost 4 hours installing the opener when Dan said it would take 2 at the most (I had to print every single page of the installation manual for the poor guy so he could finish in 4 hours!)
5. The installer never indicated adj. the spring was not part of the deal. He simply stated he did not have the proper tools, but promised to get the a guy over later so he could do the job. He even took pictures of the springs so he could take back to his company for someone to review it and arrange the follow up.
6. Allison called the next day to follow up on the installation. I told her during that call that I was expecting someone to come out to do the spring adj. She said that she would check with Dan.
7. No one ever called or came to check/adj. the spring.
Fast forward...a few weeks later, after coming home from grocery store and entering my home, I heard a LOUD noise from the garage. Yup, you guessed it. One of the torsion springs broke!!! Which one do you ask? The one that I asked to be adjusted. Yep, the same one that the carpenter guy took a picture of.
So now I am stuck without a workable door, again. This time, I need to have both springs replaced - no way to get around this. I called Dan to explain the problem and see what he could do to make this right. I started out by explaining that I had specifically asked for this service in order to AVOID this problem. In fact, I mentioned that his guy took a picture and everything and promised to get back to me. Dan immediately went on the defensive, denied ever offering me that service and admitted that "if he had offered that service, why would I send a carpenter to work on your garage door?" EXACTLY, why would anyone, under any circumstances, ever send a guy to do a job if he is not qualified or capable of doing it right?!? After I mentioned that I would be willing to buy all the parts if he would put in the labor to replace the springs (fair in my opinion), he emphatically said no. He denied any responsibility and said the only way to get it done would be to charge me an extra $300 for that work!
I get it, this is small potatoes compared to the "big" jobs. Dan in fact reminded me several times of how small my job was in comparison to all the other stuff they do. My point here is if he can't even handle this kind of responsibility professionally and with dignity, how can a homeowner have any confidence in this company to handle their next home project? Dan & Co. are very inviting and thoughtful up until they've cashed your check. Then you are on your own. So do yourself a favor and hire a professional company instead of Dan and Crown Construction of Plainfield, IL. I filed a BBB complaint to make them accountable for their actions. NEVER AGAIN. read more
