I popped in, to a delightfully temperature maintained simple bakery room. The smell hit me and I almost melted. I ordered and took a couple of croissants to a friend's. Seriously amazing. They cover everything: light fluffy, flaky, crunchy, layered. This place looks like a traditional bakery in a European village - I love it. I have been coming back ever since. I was advised that this bread was their best seller and I can understand why. It was fantastic with great texture and flavour and just the right accompaniment for the lovely, very well made soup. There was sensational coffee here as well. Deep, rich and delectable. Best I've had for a while. I was advised it was Code Black coffee . A beautiful brew with incredible length and brilliantly made too. I'm in a bit of shock about how much I enjoyed it here. Where Sugardough stands up is through the consistency and crunch of their breads. They don't over produce, so you won't be getting left over stock at the end of the day. This can mean that they won't have exactly the variety you're after, but you know it's fresh and that's of far more importance. They also do great (and consistently so) coffee, cakes, pizza slices and have some of the best pies in Melbourne. The interior of the store is quite beautiful, with a glass enclosure where they roll out and cut sheets of pastry. Behind the glass enclosure is where the assembly happens and they definitely don't want you to take photos there. I ordered the ham and gruyere croissant. It was definitely flakey. I found the ham and gruyere to be an excellent combination. It was flavorful and I enjoyed the creamy gruyere cheese. While the croissant was good, I don't get the hype though. I've had croissants that are just as flakey in other countries.
