At the ripe old age of 53, I've become increasingly determined to live to 100 with vitality. I…read morethink I might have a few genetic factors working in my favor, but I still need a plan and it needs to be executed consistently if I'm going to meet this milestone. The two twin pillars of this plan are predictably diet and exercise. For the past six months, I've been fine tuning the diet and am happy with the results. Now the attention has been turned to exercise. I've been running one marathon a year for several years now and I wanted to up my expectations from "finish" to "run a sub-4 hour marathon." That is going to take a lot of work for me and a different approach. That's where CrossFit enters the picture. I want to focus on strengthening my core and building up some anaerobic explosive strength to complement my normal running routine. CrossFit 1525 is the second CrossFit gym I tried out and I quickly decided it was the one for me because of its closeness to my place, its ample space and equipment and the overall ambiance of the experience. Although CrossFit puts a lot of emphasis on Olympic and power lifting (something completely new to me), I've yet to encounter a lug-head lifter/body builder type here. The 5:00 AM class I attend usually has twice as many women attending as men and it's a very supportive yet still competitive environment. Nikki, the owner, has assembled an excellent staff of trainers and created a culture of hard work that is still fun. I've met a lot of cool people I never would have otherwise and am also relishing the social aspect of this. As a newbie, I'm eating humble pie. I consider myself more fit than most guys my age, but when I struggle through a WOD (workout of the day) and typically finish, completely exhausted, at or near the back end of the class (times are rigorously recorded), I can see what a wonderful opportunity for improvement is in my near future (yes - I am putting a big positive spin on this). After three weeks, I'm seeing and feeling big differences in my body. With the exception of a bad rope burn on my ankle from rope climbing (wear higher socks next time, silly), I've also not injured myself because of good instruction on many skills that I've never encountered before. My shorter term goals are to put on 10 lbs of lean muscle mass and run a personal best in the 2013 Houston Marathon. I believe CrossFit 1525 is just the recipe I need. There are numerous things I can't do yet like handstand push-ups, but there is a "scaled" version of every exercise so that all can participate and get benefit. Has it helped my running? Just this morning I was pleased at my ability to explode into a sprint over the last 200 m of a six mile run and finish really strong. That wasn't happening before I started going to CrossFit 1525 four times a week.

This gym is great! I…read moreenjoy this gym dearly. I've been going to CFMH for over 2 months now and I can't get enough of it. The pricing and schedule is right in line with other crossfit gyms in the area. The owner is very helpful. She is helpful and enthusiatic about the culture of crossfit. The other coaches are great assets to the 'box'. They are also willing to answer any fitness/nutritional question in person or via e-mail or fb. The 'box' is fully equipped with everything a crossfitter would need. Plenty of weights, kettlebells, plyo boxes, jump ropes, tires etc. They also offer a nutritional challenge for the members for the summer, spring and fall. Yoga classes once a week and various health seminars. The other members are supportive and competitive. Once you go through a couple of WODs with them you feel like they are family.

So I was introduced to Sarah Provan by my nutritionist, Michael Florida. For me finding a personal trainer is almost as important as finding a boyfriend or a hairstylist. You have to vibe well and they must have an understanding of what you need. I was also very skeptical of crossfit because one it looks very intimidating and two lots of people get hurt through it. But since she came highly recommended by someone I really trust, I decided to give it a go. Day 1: Preview workout. She really sat down and got to know my fitness background, my fitness goals, and my style of working out. We did a preview workout which was challenging but very motivating because I got through it! Outside of training days: Because I also enjoy spin, she worked it in with my plan and also assigns great workouts too. Cardio blast is no joke! Training: Each and every workout session I learn something new and it is very exciting to me. The workouts are HARD, and I cuss and sweat and overly dramatic, but always always leave feeling very accomplished. Progression: In just about a month that I have been with Sarah, I have definitely regained strength, improved technically, am not as winded, and now can get up into a wall assisted headstand! Oh and dropping 5lbs of fat didn't hurt either!! I can't wait to continue on with my fitness journey with Sarah by my side!! Also with Sarah's training, I am feeling more confident and hope to join the classes soon.

Amazing. HIGHLY recommend…read more CrossFit Illuminati is perfect for anyone who wants to start being active, or challenge themselves to different lengths. In other words, whether you're a beginner or you're super fit, I think it's a fantastic place to come to. I've been a competitive swimmer for about 12 years and just began triathlon. Definitely not a land person, but I'm all about challenging myself and trying something new. I used to hear from a lot of people that CrossFit wasn't good for you because people don't really care about form, so it leads to injury. It's definitely not the case here, you have coaches here who watch over you and make sure you're doing exercises properly before adding weights or furthering your progression. I've learned a lot! I was worried about coming in and being completely lost, but I had been in contact with Jason beforehand and I wasn't lost one bit in the two free sessions I came in. Right away, he was there to guide me. Jason was very patient and super encouraging! I absolutely love the atmosphere in here. There is a team sense, you just have to be willing to speak up and talk to people here. They're all super kind and supportive. I'm just sad cause I have to leave for college now, but I will FOR SURE be back here on my extended breaks!

Top-notch facilities and a great atmosphere!!…read more I've had a wonderful experience at Memorial City/Club. The facilities are well maintained, clean, and equipped with everything needed for a comfortable visit. Whether for fitness, recreation, or social time, the space feels thoughtfully designed. The staff is professional, friendly, and always helpful. The overall environment is welcoming and well organized, making it easy to relax and enjoy your time there. Overall, Memorial City/Club delivers quality service and a great experience. I would highly recommend it and look forward to visiting again.

Not to be confused with Memorial City Cub, which is actually a bear. Legit…read more It's a pretty elite Gym which only serves people that work in the area, and it's kinda fancy but also kind of expensive which I suppose makes sense, because if the earnings of the people that work around here are anything to go by, then this is expected to cost a lot. But it does seem a bit elitist, and also I think the fact that it opens at 5:30 can be a bit of a problem, because if you work here at Memorial City and you start at 8, that might be okay as long as you only want a quick workout, but if you work somewhere else in Houston and you start even as late as 9 then good luck getting done with a 2-hour workout and getting to work in time.
