Can't say enough about this gym! I've been a member here since 2016, so I've seen the gym go through many phases, Pre covid, covid, post covid. Regardless of the situation, the programming and coaching are always 10/10. The community is truly unlike anything else. They do a great job of engaging everyone and planning community events. I've been going to CFUS for 6 years. The programming and some of the coaches are top notch. Unfortunately I cannot say the same about the rest of the gym. The space is small and gets overcrowded, and the waitlist is often 10+ people deep. Membership increases every year without justification, and some members pay less than others. Management does not value its members, especially the female ones. I recently broke my leg and they required me to pay the full $300 membership fee if I wanted to use the equipment during open gym. It's disappointing that the gym has become less focused on members and more focused on profits. read more

I've been putting off writing this review because I knew I'd have a lot to say! After I left my gym in Arizona I had been at for 2.5 years I was so sad and had no idea if I was going to find a place where I got a great workout and also found a good community since all of my friends in AZ were from the gym. I dropped into a few places like Crossfit NYC: Black Box (HATED it) and 5th ave (nice but inconvenient location) and I'm so happy that Union Square was my "third time's the charm" attempt. The facility is basic and not fancy schmancy like Solace or Equinox, which is exactly what I want from a Crossfit. I don't need all the bells and whistles, I want a good workout! And Coach Jay Adams' workouts are like NO OTHER. They're incredible difficult (I can't Rx anything anymore) but very scalable for beginners or people like me who do CrossFit every day but just still kind of suck at lifting but go for the sweat. I sweat hard every day and never get bored. A lot of people are intimidated by Crossfit, and trust me, while it's really hard when you push hard - you can absolutely do it! I'm by no means a stellar athlete and I still go 5x a week. The coaches are all great. Jay, the head coach, is so knowledgeable, helpful, and a mastermind with programming. Shout outs to coaches Nikki and Liz (but they are all great) who I tend to see the most of and always give me great advice, especially since I'm really challenged on squat form. They're always trying to improve everyone's form. On top of that, the community here is wonderful. I love all my friends here and the gym regularly has fun events like trivia night, an annual fall BBQ, a Christmas party, networking nights, competitions, and more. If community is what you're looking for, this is the place. A few things to know: 1) the locker situation isn't great, but you can leave stuff just in the gym space and it's safe 2) there are showers, and they have a towel service which is great 3) they have an on-site physical therapist, Tyler Kenton 4) you can order Kettlebell kitchen to be delivered here 5) they carry water, Fitaid, Rx bars, etc. Highly recommend CFUSQ for Crossfit newbies and veterans alike! read more

Went to my first CrossFit group session here! The space is really great and well equipped and the instructor/community was very encouraging. I had a great time with the challenging workout. I like how we moved around the space and worked with partners, plus they played some fun music :) Hope to visit again soon - I've heard that they have really good COVID policies and safety precautions in place. read more

Sometimes, when the day is done and you rest your tired head on a pillow you probably bought on the internet, instead of slipping off into dreamy dream land you worry about your deepest fears. Before I started at CFUS maybe I worried about my health, my job, my friends... and since CFUS all that has changed. Now, my health? yeah its great, I workout at CFUS and have seen results for the first time in my life, great results! I can't believe I wasted so much time and money in other gyms or doing other fad workout classes. My Job? I'm way less stressed because the workouts keep me sane. My friends? Ok, I know it is the worst crossfit stereotype, but it is almost impossible not to make friends when you spend so much time with like minded people. Yes, I made a lot of friends at CFUS and I see them every day so I know they are fine. So, back to the pillow. It isn't like suddenly I have no deepest fears, they are just different. Now when I lay down at night I think "what if Covid means CFUS can't reopen", "what if Jay (the head coach) is inspired to follow his dreams and open a bakery upstate instead of programming for workouts", "what if I have to take a rest day tomorrow". I know, it is a lot, but some how I deal. Don't let that discourage you though! If you are trying to decide if CFUS is the right gym for a drop in or a new membership I'll tell you that the defining characteristics are the programming, the coaches, and the members. Programming - Every wod is up on their instagram so check for yourself. Somehow every day Jay finds a way to create a new wod that is both fun and thoughtfully designed to make you better. He is a gift. A true gem. Coaches - The coaches are extremely engaged even though the class sizes can get large. You never see the "just read the wod off the whiteboard and walk away" kind of coach here. I just wouldn't fly. Members - People are really fit and friendly at this gym. Fit in that they are super motivating to work out with because they push you to get better. Friendly in that anyone you talk to is happy to help. Ok, it is NYC, so don't exactly expect the level of outgoing welcome you get in the midwest, people are more shy in NYC, but if you talk to them they will probably be happy you did. Becoming a member of CFUS 2 years has changed my life more than anything else I've done since. read more

This place used to be incredible. I started at its sister box - CrossFit 5th Ave - and came here a few times in the beginning of my CrossFit days. After a few years away from CrossFit I came back, to the box at least, as a weightlifter. The appeal of CrossFit Union Square was in their claim (on their website) to be a USA Weightlifting certified gym with a barbell club and a membership structure for weightlifters as well as crossfitters. The location is fantastic for anyone who lives and works in Manhattan. I was happy to pay the $265 membership and workout in a back corner of the gym. They have kilo plates, a couple Eleiko bars, separate squat racks - so that I wasn't taking up space in the "crossfit" part of the gym. This all ended abruptly and with such short notice it still blows my mind. The recently hired gym manager (whose LinkedIn resume lists Equinox and Barry's among others) notified me, in no uncertain terms, on a Sunday afternoon that "effective immediately" I was no longer permitted to lift outside of 9am to 4pm. I had gone to exhaustive measures to be sure that training in the early morning was allowed - I'd verified with the head coach, and the (now former) weightlifting coach. Who are these people that can afford astronomically high gym memberships and also do not work until 5pm? Who are they? At this point in my review it is relevant to note that both my boyfriend and I lifted at CrossFit Union Square, and while they have ample kilo plates (which are not used in CrossFit workouts) we came with our own plates and bars. We paid the CrossFit price for the privilege of using our equipment, albeit in someone else's space. We did not pay the advertised "weightlifting membership" price which was significantly less. I was told multiple times that price structure no longer applied, despite it still being boldly listed on the gym's website. Back to the new gym manager...what this signaled to me was that the gym valued future members more than current members - and that the rules can change on a whim, with no consideration as to their impact on the lives of those to whom they apply. I remember a handful of times where dogs ran freely throughout the gym during class. It may surprise you to realize that animals are a new obstacle you must dodge in your workouts if you intend to train here. Let's not even get into the fact that people have allergies, or that dogs don't take themselves to the bathroom. I digress. I cannot recommend this gym on any level. It is a poorly run business with very little concern for those individuals who are not ultra conformist to the ever-changing, and increasingly oppressive expectations placed upon clientele. The showers and bathrooms are severely lacking in both space and cleanliness. Go to Brick. Or Solace. Or anywhere else. This gym is not worth the money. read more

I'm a long time CrossFitter (8 years now, sheesh) who recently switched home gyms to CrossFit Union Square. I couldn't be happier. The programming is amazing (and amazingly hard, but in a great way that inspires me, and the coaches always help me with scaling); the members are committed and kind and welcoming and clearly a community; the coaches are friendly and inspirational and give the very best and most nuanced cues and somehow have learned my name already. It is a CrossFit gym that still loves CrossFit, if that makes sense. I dislike change, in general, as a human being. But I'm utterly delighted with my decision to join the team and my new friends at CrossFit Union Square. read more

Great box in the heart of union square! I've been coming here for almost a year now and I've been cross fitting for almost 3 years so I know a good box when I see one. There's a reebok store upstairs which is super convenient and the programming here is very good. You get a wide range of movements from oly, power lifting, long and short metcons, and gymnastics movements. The people and community here are supportive and there are a lot of us but there are also a lot of classes so no one class is super huge. The coaches here are all super nice and skilled so you will be in good hands! read more

I am a few years new to CrossFit. When I joined, I was unsure about my ability to lift heavy weights, to test my endurance and heart rate and do it with other experienced athletes. CFUS quickly became my home. I drop into many gyms when I travel and it is so clear that the programming at CFUS across CrossFit and weightlifting, coaching, and even the members are top notch here. It is truly inspiring to workout with this community, to be challenged and have fun with creative and results - oriented programming. I've been doing Crossfit for about three months at a gym in Brooklyn. I just recently started a new job in Manhattan and have been having trouble getting to my own gym. I decided to drop in and try Crossfit Union Square because of its convenient location. I called ahead to make sure there was room in the class, and they said yes, so I made my way to the 7pm class after work. The actual facility is top notch. They have very nice bathrooms, lockers, and a few showers. The equipment is all great, and the coaches seemed pretty nice. When 7:00 came around and we were asked to huddle up, I quickly realized how packed the gym was. There must have been 35 people in the class, too many to comfortably fit while doing the WOD. The WOD and strength workouts were well put together, but equipment had to be shared and it was hard to move around during the WOD because of lots of moving barbells. I also wasn't really able to receive individualized attention during the workout, simply because there were so many people. I am used to a gym with a 20 person cap, where the coaches are able to encourage and give advice during the workout. Despite the great facilities and the convenient location, I'm going to bust my ass a little harder to make it to my gym in Brooklyn. read more

This box is recently opened (three weeks at the time of this review) and conveniently located close to our favorite NYC hotel. We were in town for a long weekend and decided to drop-in. COST $35 pp for a drop-in class -- on par with other NYC boxes. TRAINING World class, literally. Chris E. "Supple Leopard" was our coach Friday morning and he was fantastic. He took us through some great pre-WOD warm-ups and static holds to fire up our shoulders in advance of the day's WOD. Programming at CrossFit Union Square is two-time female CrossFit Games champion, Annie Thorisdottor. You really can't ask for much higher up the CF food chain. The equipment is top notch and the facilities are great. I would suspect this will continue since this box is tied to Reebok. If I lived in NYC, I would definitely contemplate joining this box and calling it home. If you are in NYC and need a place to drop-in, definitely checkout CrossFit Union Square! read more

This is the second Crossfit gym I've belonged to, so I have some means of comparison in the Crossfit world... The gym and equipment itself is top notch. Everything seems well cared for, and up to date. The trainers are all fantastic, and give me as much 1:1 time as they can.I feel like I'm truly working to improve my form, not just the amount of weight I can push. Cons of this gym. Way. Too. Crowded. The class sizes are outrageous, and truly get in the way of my workouts. They need to instate some sort of cap or something because it truly is daunting. Also, the locker rooms are TINY. It's always a game of "let's not touch someone's junk while I change". Overall, I love my gym and there's a reason I keep going. read more

I absolutely loved loved loved loved this place. I was one of the first ones to join and I loved every minute of it. Till I herniated three disks. Easy guys. It seems simple but this is not for everyone. I really wish I could go back, I truly loved this work out. I just wish they paid more attention to the "not-so-20-years-old-anymore". I've been a member for 6 years and can't say enough about what an amazing box this is. From the coaching, community, location, and management, it's a gem in a sea of bureaucratic boxes in the city. In addition to the superior programming (very well thought out with an emphasis on strength), the owners foster a very special atmosphere by being present, being transparent on all policies/goals etc, and holding town hall meetings to learn what features/ improvements matter most to their members. read more
