Interesting experience but great workout. My friend and I…read moredo lots of drop in fitness classes. I'd say we are both pretty fit. She is a personal trainer and I am signed up for two different fitness classes throughout the week so the pace of the class worked well for us and was a great challenge. While it was a great workout, I can't even tell you what was going on in that 50 minutes. The music was unbearably loud. The instructor's mic was even louder and all any of it sounded like was noise. The coach was fine, but he didn't really coach? Everyone was expected to be doing the same thing, which is unrealistic. From my perspective, if you don't run, there's no point in taking the class because Barry's coaches the treadmill for runners only? The most unique part of our Barry's journey was the fact that no one wiped down equipment... no one wiped down their treadmill after we switched to the floor and I understood this until the END. I assumed we all would wipe EVERYTHING down at the end. Nope. Everyone just walked out. My friend and I stayed after to change and freshen up, but I never saw anyone go in and wipe any equipment down. That's kind of gross but what do I know? We should we wiping down equipment throughout class just to be safe rather than sorry. I know I would be open to taking another class, but still would love to know how these classes are formatted because it feels like the coach is just shouting random things and you kinda have to keep up or you're screwed.

F45 is a franchised gym that offers a fast-paced fun group workout roughly alternating days…read morefocusing on upper body, cardio, lower body, and full body/abs/cardio. The workouts focus on "functional" fitness and are 45 minutes long (except for one hour-long session a week), hence the F45 name. The workout for the day is the same program whether you're exercising in Australia where the program began or here in little Rhody. (Very cool today to take a 9am session here while my daughter took the same one in LA.) Pre-registration is required as there is a limit of 28 participants in any class - at least in this club. The goal to to move fast, sweat, and develop some camaraderie with your fellow participants and partner for the day - high fives are pretty much mandated. Two staff members work at every session. They explain and QUICKLY demo each move and describe the circuit. You and your "partner" - assuming an even numbers of people in the class, you are paired with someone who moves through your circuit with you - start at an assigned station and receive direction and timing from a video screen demo'ing your move as you do it. The staff regularly visit everyone in the room giving support and encouragement and some comments to assist with your form, weight selection, and (in my case) an explanation of the occasionally confusing progression through the circuit. The sales material says the program works for all fitness levels but if you are not used to regular strength training, this probably isn't for you: it's fast and many of the exercises are complex (upper and lower body combined even on leg- or arm-only day, with cardio because of the limited rest periods so it's always a HIIT program), the weights start at 10 pounds, and many of the safety tips aren't consistently given (knees above ankles for a lunge, roll your shoulders back and don't collapse into it...), and it is WICKED FUN!!! The staff are friendly, the club is clean, the equipment is great (y-bells, Thor's hammers, multi-handled sand bags, in addition to the expected kettlebells, dumb bells, etc). Pricing is higher than a "gym," more like a Pilates or yoga studio. Again, I loved it - but this won't be the place for everyone.

It was probably one of the most energizing and luxurious fitness class I have tried thus far, and I've tried maybe a dozen in Boston through Class Pass. Definitely pricey but you pay for the ambiance. I'm glad I got to try the Full Body strength class since it had a good mix of everything. Arrive early to use the massage guns. The treadmills were actually quite nice and comfortable, and the floor exercises were pretty standard and targeted the arms, legs, and core. The instructor Mike was excellent - he explained the exercises clearly, gave attention to each of us individually at some point, and overall really pushed everyone hard. It was a bit crowded in the class, but not as bad as some other classes I have been to -- the worst was the women's locker room in which it was impractical to have 15 people in a small room and only one bench. Maybe it's not as much an issue for the men's locker room. Other than that, I enjoyed the class a lot and will be sore the next few days!

I decided to try my first Barry's class and didn't know anyone there. As someone who works out a…read morelot and has been to different fitness classes, I did enjoy the workout, but there were a few things that didn't do it for me. First, it's definitely an exclusive type of crowd. Everyone in my class clearly had money and seems to be pretty cliquey. There is a smoothie bar you can order at to have your severely overpriced smoothie ready after your workout. It was actually kind of ridiculous. You'd be surprised how many of the people use it, which I guess good for them?! Anyways, from a first time perspective, I would not recommend to someone trying to get into fitness and looking for an accepting community. Not one person said hi to me apart from the worker who checked me in and the coach when I entered the room, and it didn't seem genuine, just basic customer service. I was fine and did my thing but that atmosphere can definitely be a turn off and it can be really intimating for new people. This vibe translates into the class too. There was a lot of platitudes during the class. Very much an air of fakeness to how the class is structured and how the coach interacts with people trying to make it seem like we're all part of a family. The class reminded my of OrangeTheory, going through high-intensity interval circuits and alternating between aerobic exercise on the treadmills and resistance training with weights and benches. The room is oddly dark/dimmed and the music is LOUD. They do offer earplugs in the front, but wow they pump the music. Like I said, I did enjoy the workout, but it wasn't something I would go out of my way for, especially at the costs Barry's charges...!

The coaches are super engaged and truly care about each athlete. There is a true focus on safety and form, which isn't always the case at other boxes. They are all really talented at providing little tweaks to help fine tune complex movements. I've overcome my fear of the barbell from working out here. The gym itself is pretty large and has ample supply of nice equipment, which is kept tidy and clean. The prices are very reasonable for what you get, and there are a lot of packages to choose from. There's a 10% discount for Children's/Brigham/BI hospital employees. Finally, the community is the best. There are usually icebreakers if new people are present, and it really feels like a family. If you're debating trying out Crossfit for the first time, I highly encourage you to give it a go at COTH!

When I started (almost a year ago) I was "skinny-fat" You know that weird grey zone when people think you're in shape but when you take all your clothes off and see that spare tire around your waist and your flabby arms, you cringe? yea, that was me. Not to say I am a toned, fit, athletic model but I've had so many improvements (aka serious gainz) since starting last summer! I began by doing the "foundations course" classes. Its a great way to get one-on-one personal training with a coach to learn the basic movements and for the coaches to assess my strengths and weaknesses. My first couple of classes, I was thrilled to see so many walks of life there. It wasn't just shredded beef-cakes, and supple leopards, like I was expecting, but instead people older, younger, big and small. Crossfit is literally for everyone, since you scale based to what you are able to do. No one is pressuring you to work past your comfort zone (Which I was worried about) and never did I feel like I was going to puke after the workout since I listen to my body and moved at my own pace. Instead, there is a community( rather, a family) encouraging you and cheering you on! Its true what they say, often times in Crossfit, the person to finish last is the one that gets cheered on the most! I never had so many people cheer my name before! And every workout is different, which means- you don't get bored! Kettlebell swings, pull ups, clean and jerks, wall balls, deadlifts, rowing, double unders- I can go on!! All the coaches have lots of experience and come from different backgrounds, they each have their own special way of running class and are all very knowledgeable in their trade. Crossfit is for someone who wants to see what their body is capable of doing- never did I think I would run a 5k (let alone a mile) without stopping to take a puff of my albuterol inhaler. But guess what? I did it, and I have the coaches and the training at Crossfit on the Hill to thank. I cant even remember the last time I needed my inhaler! My endurance, strength, mobility and confidence has skyrocketed since joining. Some people think the price is extreme, but that's if you are one that puts their health on the back-burner. Fine, just keep sitting on the couch, watching Netflix and develop Diabetes Type II from living a sedentary life-style...paying for insulin/visiting doctors are WAY more expensive. If you're on the fence, just come in, meet the group and I guarantee you'll understand the magic that I'm talking about.

After spending COVID working out in my garage, I was missed having a community to keep me motivated in my workouts and 617 really delivered after I dropped in to check them out. I especially appreciate the programming at 617. Unlike other boxes that are geared towards advanced athletes, I find 617 to have a nice mix of movements with reps and weights that scale well across a broad spectrum of people. More emphasis on cardio as well. Other notes. It's easy to miss the building if you are visiting for the first time so look for the blue warehouse looking building sitting below the road. Also during busy classes, usually the morning ones, the parking lot can get quite busy and not fit enough cars. There is a lot in the park next door you can use and walk over.

The high ceiling lends itself to an open, airy and inviting atmosphere to work out in. The equipment itself - from free weights, to medicine balls, to bikes, are all in excellent shape. There's even an outdoor section, complete with rope climbs, tire flips, peg climbs, and other cool things I can only dream about watching on Ninja Warrior. However, as someone who's been to countless gyms in the past, what really makes or breaks a gym is its people - both the owners/management and the clientele. By this same token, what sets CrossFit 617 apart is its people. I had a chance to sit in on a class the following day - the sense of community and camaraderie between the instructors and clients was evident from the start. Everyone goes out of their way to make each other feel part of the family so to speak, and that goes a long way.
