Interesting experience but great workout. My friend and I do lots of drop in fitness classes. I'd say we are both pretty fit. She is a personal trainer and I am signed up for two different fitness classes throughout the week so the pace of the class worked well for us and was a great challenge. While it was a great workout, I can't even tell you what was going on in that 50 minutes. The music was unbearably loud. The instructor's mic was even louder and all any of it sounded like was noise. The coach was fine, but he didn't really coach? Everyone was expected to be doing the same thing, which is unrealistic. From my perspective, if you don't run, there's no point in taking the class because Barry's coaches the treadmill for runners only? The most unique part of our Barry's journey was the fact that no one wiped down equipment... no one wiped down their treadmill after we switched to the floor and I understood this until the END. I assumed we all would wipe EVERYTHING down at the end. Nope. Everyone just walked out. My friend and I stayed after to change and freshen up, but I never saw anyone go in and wipe any equipment down. That's kind of gross but what do I know? We should we wiping down equipment throughout class just to be safe rather than sorry. I know I would be open to taking another class, but still would love to know how these classes are formatted because it feels like the coach is just shouting random things and you kinda have to keep up or you're screwed. read more

Branched out from the Chestnut Hill location to the downtown one, since this location is closer to my office and I was feeling a Friday workout. The Red Room here is much bigger, and, maybe because I went during the mid-day lunch hour, the locker area felt a lot more spacious and I wasn't dodging everyone else to get my clothes/bag. And this is the OG Boston Barry's which celebrated its 10th birthday last year. That said, I do think the front desk girls can be a little nicer. No hi, no welcome, no other intro upon me walking inside. I kind of felt like I was intruding on their conversation. It was my first time at this location and so I decided to figure out on my own where the lockers were. (Note #1: The one perk that I really appreciate with the mobile Barry's app is that it lets you bypass the front desk and check in on your phone. Alas, if you sign up via ClassPass, you still have to check in in-person no later than five minutes before the start of class.) My class was with Kate and she was super friendly/led a good workout with a mix of sprints/hills. The class was also blessedly small. (Note #2: I know it may seem corny to some but I love it when instructors tell you to high five/fist bump the person next to you. It's always a bummer when the other person is too wrapped up in their workout/their reflection in the mirror to notice me extending a fist bump and then me awkwardly retracting it.) Parking: From their website, they validate parking at the 33 Arch St garage. On the weekends, it's a flat rate of $6, so you can do a class and wander around the area afterwards. read more

Great class!! They had some great first timer deals (3 classes for $50) so while in Boston my sister came here. I love the location, but I expect it could get tricky finding parking in the area. The music is loud, the instructor is loud and everyone loves to work out (hella fit folks up in here).. which is the vibe I like. However, I know this may not be for everyone. I would also recommend to the business owners to put some visual support on the treadmills like my home gym (i.e. Level One/Recovery = 5-7 mph, Level Two = 6-8mph, Level Three/All Out = 7-10+mph, etc.) because I think this would help the people who are newer figure it out. read more

The classes are good, but it's very expensive. I contacted their management about over $1000 worth of classes that I couldn't use in time due to a severe injury, and passed along my PT information for them to verify. They didn't bother to respond in the past month, so I guess it's on me to eat the cost. All I was looking for was an extension, not even a refund, but I guess once a customer has paid they aren't important enough to provide with even basic decency. I'd highly recommend you avoid this place. read more

The workout itself was so much fun. It's been a while since I've sweat this much during a workout. Music was fun, and energy in the room was good It was my first class and I was so excited for it. However, the front desk barely helped me navigate what to do unless I asked them questions. The instructors didn't help much at all and I had to get assistance from people attending the class instead. The instructors would try to hype me up, but I was disappointed in the lack of help to get me started. I was basically figuring things out all on my own. read more

I have been to this studio 3 or 4 times over the last few weeks. I really tried to give Barrys a shot because its so convenient to drop in, plus the scheduling is very easy. I just think Barrys has gone down hill the past few years. 1 instructor for maybe 40 people is wild. The instructors aren't correcting bad form nor did I feel like they care about my personal development. For example they would say grab a heavy weight and a light one. Thats terrible programing! You wouldn't walk into a gym and squat either heavy or light - youd use percentages - like 70% of ORM. Just feel like this place is a waste of money, unless you just care about the vibe of the people. Also i hate the music here. read more

Tried a class here via ClassPass. The front desk staff was welcoming and the studio was very clean. The music also was not deafening as mentioned in other reviews. The instructor was very motivating and did a good job demonstrating the stretches. I take away a star since I prefer a place that does corrections as I'm by no means an expert with weights. I appreciated they gave shout-outs at the end of the class for first timers. I left with a nice adrenaline rush and a nice burn in my muscles so it was worth it but not sure I would pay for any time of membership. read more

I absolutely love Barry's, and I actually started going in Boston. While I frequented the chestnut hill location more because it was closer to my campus, I loved going downtown to this location when I wanted to pair it with a city excursion. This location is the oldest fo the three Boston locations, but the energy here is always the best because more people are coming in after work. All the instructors are always amazing and push you to the next level. I took a class with Kelly when I was back in town this weekend for a visit. She is so great at walking everyone, from the workout pros to the first timers, through the right form for each movement. I felt right at home during this class and it was great because my friend and I could wk 100ft over to pick up a healthy lunch out of a variety of options. I attended my first 6 am class today, and it is like working out in the club. very loud music and enthusiastic instructor!

On par to Orange Theory with one less station, much louder music, twice the people, and all red. If you're not an OT person this might not be for you because this is the "manlier version". Barry's bootcamp focuses on treadmill running and weight/bodyweight training in ~50 minute class. You're assigned a number and that dictates your treadmill and floor location. Note: If you need a water refill ask the person at their protein shake counter to refill your bottle using their sink. I found it difficult to hear the instructor over the music while running as she was telling us how fast to run, when to increase, and at what incline. I kept hearing "OKAY SHREDDERS" when she was actually yelling "OKAY TREDDERS", as in the treadmill people. If you're asked to wear earplugs if the music is too loud for you then how do you hear the instructor? I also had difficulty seeing her demo the floor moves since she stayed at like slot 8 out of 25 people and everyone was standing in my field of vision (I was station 21). I'd look at my fellow classmates only to find them doing other workouts/advanced moves. The gentleman that swapped places with me between treadmill and floor left sweat all over the treadmill and floor equipment and didn't bother wiping up after himself. Not only was that disgusting but made everything slippery. The bathrooms are okay. Long toilets with just the right fit door. Showerheads that need limeaway. Bougie body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. Basic hair dryer, tampons, qtips, and cotton balls. No need to bring a lock. Bum in the lobby until your class is called. You'll notice Barry's does attract a certain type of clientele. read more

I've gone to two sessions here and I've never been disappointed. This is by far my favorite workout studio because the instructors are so motivating and everyone around you works so hard that it makes you do the same. I would recommend signing up through ClassPass if you're worried about price. New students pay $20 and continuing students pay $30. Each day has a specific routine that targets a specific body part. I've tried the full body with Kelly W. on Friday and butt/legs with Chris M on Tuesday. Both of them are very clear about what they want you to do. Chris has this amazing talk-show host voice and honestly I love it haha. You'll be given a number for which you stick to throughout the workout. At first it's kind of confusing because you'll be doing treadmill for the first round, weights second round, and then back on the treadmill and then weights again. You'll also be sharing your equipment with another person as well so if you were placed on a treadmill first, there will be another person at your strength training bench. My first time was with Kelly and she was so sweet and informative. While on the treadmill, we did a lot of sprints with and without incline. This is definitely killer, depending on how fast you want to go. Strength training was pretty fun, we used resistance bands during butt and legs and omg my butt was ON FIRE the next day. There are lockers, hair dryers, 4 showers with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and towels for use. Bathrooms and locker rooms are always clean and tidy. read more

I am 100% addicted - and this is coming from someone who absolutely detested running the mile in high school and didn't run at all in college. You literally cannot go wrong with a single instructor - they're all excellent. My favorites are Brittany W (her playlist appeals to a younger 20-something crowd which I love), Greg U (diversified playlist - somehow I always get higher mileage in his classes), and Candice (very tough overall). After 20+ classes, I can run comfortably at a 9mph pace and sprint at a 12.5+. I am in awe of the transformation - I've been spinning (Flywheel, Soul, etc) for 2 years now and haven't noticed this much toning as I have in only 3 months of Barry's. My endurance has improved dramatically and I literally feel like a different person. Classes are not intimidating at all and everyone is focused on improving themselves, so there's no judgement if you can't keep up. Less emphasis on the motivational talk but instructors know just what to say to encourage you to run 1mph faster. If you're reasonably athletic and work out regularly (cardio 3+ times a week) you probably will be able to handle a 60-min class. If not, the class might be challenging at first but you slowly get used to the motion. After my first few classes my body would be unbearably sore 2-3 days after, but now I can do back to back classes and not feel much the next day. The only thing I would warn newcomers about is to take it a little bit easier on your first few sprints. I was over-ambitious and tried to sprint at a 13, and it led to my knee and ankle joints feeling really off for 2 weeks, during which I wasn't able to run at all. So definitely pace yourself! For people who say you can get this same workout in an Equinox gym where the monthly membership is half the price of a month of Barry's - obviously you COULD, but there's something very special about Barry's - it's truly the atmosphere and being among 40+ other people who are enduring the same thing, that pushes you beyond what you could ever do by yourself at a gym. read more

I love barrys! I have been doing their classes for years at many locations. Came to this new Brentwood location for a workout, got home and misplaced/left 4 diamond rings in my class and thought I threw them away with my towel. I was so devastated when I realized the next day as one of them has really sentimental value to me. The team at Barrys Brentwood was SO nice, honest and helpful in trying to find them for me the entire next day after my class. Nico, the manager made a mission to find my rings and HE DID!!! In terms of intensity and calories burned this is my top workout stop. My only issue is that I literally can't lift heavy weights and there aren't any modifications suggested. If your form is off they will not tell you so you have to be very careful. These classes aren't for people who don't work out on a regular basis. The treadmill sprints are intense and if you aren't used to cardio it could be quite shocking. I modify what I need to and get an awesome workout. Everyone is focused on themselves so you don't have to worry about anyone spying on you. You will work really hard for an hour and it will be worth it!! read more

Jessie's lower body workout on Tuesdays are my absolute favorite class! 2 sets on the treadmill and 2 sets on the floor. She targets your glutes like no other. Her song selection is always hip hop with edm mix, which I love. Her class is high energy and you will leave feeling as though you got your a*s kicked! 10/10 recommend taking her class! read more

This is an update to my previous review. The workouts are challenging but not worth the price. The music is still extremely loud, way beyond OSHA and NIOSH recommended levels. Gyms need to understand that extremely loud music does not equal more motivation, it equals hearing impairment! For the Butts & Legs session, I asked Garrett (the girl) to turn the volume down a notch. To my surprise she said I CAN'T. Told me to get some earplugs instead. What a way to please customers... try wearing earplugs while sweating like a pig, it's so uncomfortable an not hygienic. I'm definitely not going back to Barry's ever again. To put some numbers to the loudness of Barry's, I measured the noise levels for three classes. The average level for all three were above 105dBA To understand what this means here's some info directly from OSHA website: "OSHA allows 8 hours of exposure to 90 dBA but only 2 hours of exposure to 100 dBA sound levels. NIOSH would recommend limiting the 8 hour exposure to less than 85 dBA. At 100 dBA, NIOSH recommends less than 15 minutes of exposure per day." read more

I am a Barry's Bootcamp aficionado. Jessie is my favorite instructor and I especially love the Chest, Back, and Ab class on Wednesdays! I always leave class feeling sore in the best way possible. These classes are a mix of treadmill and floor sets. She's motivational and plays fun hip hop and electronic dance music. And before I leave, I make sure I wash my face with the Oribe ritual face cleanser! It's a staple in my skincare routine now. read more

This is probably the best/hardest workout I have been to in Boston. The studio is nice, but what I like about it is that it gets to the point. It is not like one of the spotless boutique-y barre studios in Boston, it is just a very versatile space. The locker rooms get sweaty and crowded, but that is to be expected. They do have showers and a lot of people seem to go before or after work. For the workout, it is different each time and different depending on the day (another thing I like). My favorite is Arms & Abs day. It is typically about half on the treadmill doing high intensity interval training and then half on the ground doing work on the mat or with weights. The music is good, the trainers are motivating, and sometimes it seems nearly impossible, but I always come through feeling like I worked hard and accomplished something. If you feel like rewarding yourself, they have an excellent smoothie bar. But be forewarned, it'll cost you ($11 per smoothie). read more

This was the second Barry's studio I've visited in Boston and definitely my favorite. I, unfortunately for my wallet, have become a HUGE fan of Barry's after now stopping in at roughly 10 classes. The workouts are challenging, the environment motivating, and the majority of teachers fantastic. As someone who has never been confident in my running/sprinting abilities, I've been overwhelmed in coming to terms with what my body is able to do. I've felt empowered and incredibly strong. Trying to figure out the best way to make these workouts affordable, but definitely a self-proclaimed devotee!! If you're taking your first class, I'd strongly recommend Kelly (total badass, creative workouts, SO sweet) or Jessie (fun, amazing music, so kind!). read more

Coming from a guy who's been lifting in the gym for about 10 years, I can tell you that Barry's is no joke. Since you can push yourself as hard as possible without inhibiting anyone else's workouts, you can really get that cardio on while working on your abs. You'll be amazed to see other people do better than you too, as working out at the gym doesn't quite give you the strength to push the intensity as high as others who've been going to Barry's for a while. It won't give you swole muscles, but maybe that's not what this workout is about. The workout is a combination of high-rep weight training and cardio, where you go from one to the other for about two to four rounds. They play up-beat music and everyone's encouraging each other. Not quite as intense as cross-fit, but definitely great place to mix it up a bit. read more

I came for the first time with ClassPass last week with the encouragement of a friend and was pleasantly surprised just how much I loved Barry's. The staff knew I was a newcomer and the instructor prioritized teaching the style and equipment of the class before we started, even moving my position closer to the center of the room so he could help me out if needed. Half of the people in the class start out on the treadmill, while the other half is doing weights/floor. The instructor simultaneously instructs both groups, which I needed 1-2 rounds to get used to when he was talking to mine. You switch a few times throughout class, during mine it was about 3 times and the intervals of the workout were different. The first set on the treadmill is a little difficult to follow because you're trying to get used to so many things at once, but it definitely got easier afterward. I started on the floor and definitely preferred that, because I could tell from the weight routine (that I had just done) when it was almost time to switch. There wasn't a lot of modifications offered, but I think you'd need more than one instructor to help with that. I did the full body workout and I left feeling tired but accomplished! They also have a smoothie bar. You order a smoothie before class and then it is waiting for you when you finish. There is no place to fill up water (a little commercial scheming I thought) but if you ask the smoothie bar they are more than welcome to fill ya up. read more

A friend brought me to Barry's a couple months ago and I'm addicted! Great class format with reps and treadmill. They also have the option to do double floor if running isn't your thing or if your legs need a break. My favorite instructor is hands down Chris M - super positive workout, but also challenging! If gentrification was a gym, it'd be Barry's. There was nothing special about the workout that warrants the price (I get it.. they take up prime real estate so their rents must be very high). The music was incredibly loud-I don't love having Justin Bieber blasted in my ears since there are like 8 speakers and all of them are next to the treadmills. Talking about treadmills--why am I paying someone to have me workout on the treadmill for half the class? Maybe accept less students per class, have them ALL workout on the ground, instead of switching back and forth between treadmill and bands/weights. I am visiting Boston for a week and wanted to get some exercise in to stick with my regiment. After watching the intense promo videos and reading the reviews, I nervously signed myself up for a class- back, chest and abs. I consider myself to be pretty active and in adequate shape and was curious as to how i'd fare. What I liked: -The instructor asks who has any injuries or is new and reviews the modes of the treadmill with you and perodiocally checked in throughout the class to make sure I was still alive -it was a great workout and I liked that you could choose if you wanted to incorporate cardio on the treadmill or not. I wore my garmin and burned around 800 calories -good music that keeps you pumped -fuel bar -locker room w locks included and shower w shampoo, facewash, etc It is very pricey- if I lived in the area this would be a limiting factor for me. That being said, they do kick your a** for you, which is hard for some of us to do ourselves at the gym. Needless to say, I survived and felt great. I felt very energized after the class. I'll see how I feel tomorrow and decide if i'll join another class before my flight later this week lol! read more

I'd never been to a bootcamp class of any sort before, but as someone with a long fitness background and a desire to stay fit for life (I've done marathons/tris/centuries, college swimming, actual military bootcamp, assorted high school sports), I'd always wondered what they'd be like. The short story is, Barry's is not for me. I found their motivational techniques offensive. Some people might find comments such as "I know it hurts, but like anal, you get used to it over time" or "your ass is your second face" motivational, but I found them demeaning.  I went on an "arms" day, but found that the arms portion of the workout involved lots of bicep curls and not a lot else. (In the interest of being clear, yes, we did some brief triceps work, and yes, the bicep push-ups we did would count as pressing and not curling, but that is about it for muscle groups activated.) There was no instruction on form and not a whole lot of attention paid to it either. We also spent half the class sprinting on a treadmill. I'm confident I could find a better workout for free in the classes offered at my gym. Maybe a different instructor would have yielded a better experience? read more

I definitely don't get the hype. My experience here was awful. Let me break it down: - Customer service: Did you know that you're penalized for coming just one minute late? Barry's apparently overfills their classes and has more floor spaces than treadmills, so I had to do what they cheerily called "double floor" exercises. This is total bullsh*t. I call it "cheating your customers" because I'm paying the same amount for half the experience. I'm pretty disgusted. I knew scumbag airlines did this kind of thing, but workout classes? Huge WTF here. I get that they tell you to come 5min early for risk of your spot getting taken, but offering half a routine? I was not aware of that policy at all and it really pisses me off. - Instructor: Honestly not great. She just yelled out commands, didn't really explain or do the motions with us. Since this class is split into two groups simultaneously either tread-milling or doing floor exercises, she would alternate commands at a rapid-fire pace, and it was super confusing and hard to follow. - Layout: This annoyed me the most of all. The room is set up like a long hallway with a row of mats facing one wall and a row of treadmills facing the other. So if you're not right in the middle of the class, there's basically no easy way to see the instructor. I swear everyone around me was super confused and not getting the hang of whatever motions we were supposed to be doing. - Routine itself: Just sucked. I didn't learn any new moves from the floor exercises, and the treadmill portion is literally just jogging at alternating speeds and resistances. Couldn't one just do this themselves at a gym? I do not get why people find this challenging or enjoyable whatsoever. Clearly I hated Barry's Bootcamp and would not recommend it to my worst enemy. I left feeling angry and completely dissatisfied, so so much for the endorphins boost from exercising. Don't pay the hefty price for this class. Don't even come if it's free. read more

So I went here because a) I'd been hearing about it for years and b) it seemed similar to one of my favorite workouts in DC (Elevate Interval Fitness). First of all, it was extremely bro-y, in a way that I personally found off-putting. But more importantly, there was absolutely NO focus on form. There were definitely times I knew I was doing something wrong and no one came around to correct me. Plus, the end of class was a two minute plank where if we fell to our knees, we had to do push-ups. The instructor kept yelling "I don't care what you have to do to stay in it, but stay in it." I just feel like that drives you to do planks incorrectly - I definitely was for the last 20 seconds or so. In conclusion, the workout was fine. Elevate isn't anywhere except DC, so if I go to a different city and this is my only treadmill/weights workout class option I'll take it, but for a class that's supposed to be the best workout class ever, I was singularly unimpressed. Best workout class I've ever been to in the city! Every time you go here get ready to be worked. You will leave this class exhausted and fulfilled each time. There are no easy classes. Each class is broken up into time on the treadmill and time on the floor. The treadmill segments usually consist of a mix of sprints, uphill, backpedaling and of course (some) breaks! On the floor (depending on the muscle group for your class) you will do a series of anaerobic that will KILL you. I promise you that each set will have you close to quitting. On top of the solid sequence, you also get a top-of-the-line experience. The instructors are pros and really know how to keep both the treadmills and floor people on track at the same time. The lighting inside the room is coolly dimmed and the music is always on tempo. You'll get some mix of electronic mashups and hip hop. Finally, there's a smoothie bar at the front where you can write your orders on the sheet before your class starts so that they have the drink ready as soon as you get out. It's perfect! So if you're into fitness you have to try it! And get ready to SWEAT! Get ready to feel pain. But ultimately get ready to feel AWESOME about your workout. Tip: Price is high but if you use ClassPass it's more reasonable! read more

I enjoy coming to Barry's a couple times a month and definitely feel like it adds important variation to my routine...the classes are CHALLENGING! Pros: - HARD workout that's unlike any other studio I've been to - Workout combines cardio and strength training - All the instructors are pretty good, high-energy and motivating - Nice changing/bathroom/shower area with lockers with locks - Free towels - Great location near Downtown Crossing, easily accessible from the Park St train station - SMOOTHIE BAR! Cons: - It can be confusing how the instructors are instructing two completely separate groups - Little (or no) hands-on corrections, not much attention to form...because of this, I definitely would NOT come to Barry's if you're new to the work out scene because I feel like you could easily get injured at a place like this - Do they wipe down the machines? This doesn't bother me as much as it may for other people, but definitely a consideration read more

A solid, 45 to 50 minute work out with an attentive, military-esque instructor who will get you moving the entire time! As someone who has done CrossFit for almost 3 years and am training for my 4th marathon I found the work out great for butt n' legs (the areas its was targeting). Here is the run down: Pros: -nice, friendly staff (very friendly, outgoing, and personable!) -student rates -CLEAN space -easy set up for class and all prepared for you to go to and from the gym easily during lunch or before work -package deals, smoothies, and food for after class (over priced but still, available none the less). Cons: -sort of a cluster fuck in terms of the set up/organization. I felt like the instruction was not great (I was sort of confused about WHAT we were to be doing) and its incredibly distracting when people in the class just stop working out. The 2 dudes next to me also loudly said to each other at the start of class, "Yo Dawg, I am so high right now..." so that sort of set the tone for the people next to me. They also were not able to do 1/2 the stuff consistently. -Music wasn't great :/ would have iced it to be louder/more hip hop and rap read more

I often frequent this Downtown Crossing location as well as the Back Bay location, but this is my first time writing a review. This location is a bit smaller but still clean and cute. It's located near a bunch of healthy lunch options for after class (Sweetgreen, Dig Inn, Minigrow, etc), which is nice. This Saturday, I took a 1:30 class (full body-upper focus) with Kelly W. It was pretty empty (this location is really packed on weekdays because it's such a business district) which I appreciated because then I wasn't switching off with anyone else going from floor to tread. I did the full body workout with Chris (great instructor), but the workouts change each day of the week, so I could see this being a good way to vary your routine. I really like Barry's. I get an incredible workout every time.. There's something about being part of a group that motivates you. I've never left there not feeling absolutely drained.. And feeling awesome. I also have to say that every time I have gone it has been 20 fit, hot women and me.. I would highly recommend it to any single men.. I don't mean that in a pervy way and I am taken at this point. I digress... It is a great workout and I think it is well worth the price. One caveat I would add is that there is no water bubbler ( aka fountain). So if you sweat profusely like me and don't want to pay 3 bucks for water .. Bring some with you. read more

I don't typically do fitness class reviews, but this place deserves all the praise it can get. I am a fitness instructor as well and I tend to be picky when I say "someone is amazing". But Derek truly is. He is attentive to everyone (even in the full classes), he remembers everyone's name once they come once or twice, he has the best music ever, and his workouts are always fresh and effective. He even remembers the fitness levels of the regulars and knows how to safely push people to their next level. I can't say enough good things about this instructor. The place is super clean, the sign up system is organized and Dustin, the owner, is a sweetheart. Overall, this is the best boot camp workout in Boston. I'm hooked. read more
