I've been going to GymIt for a while now, and the experience has been great largely because of Jean, the manager. He's always friendly, approachable, and genuinely cares about the members. Whenever I've had a question about equipment, classes, or membership details, he's been quick to help and never made me feel like I was bothering him. The gym stays clean and well-run, and it's clear Jean keeps his team on top of things. He creates a welcoming atmosphere that makes you actually want to show up. They put in a big new turf and just got a whole bunch of plate loaded equipment. It's like a whole new gym. Staff is great as always.

The work-out space has been renovated, completely upgraded. It's an elite work-out space that's now on par with the elite physical trainers there to work with you. I've been a member long enough to see really noticeable and frankly awesome results that other members have achieved with the trainers - bulking up, losing fat and inches, just all-around fitness. I can't wait for the new equipment to show up, but it's worth checking out in the meantime. read more

I've been a member for over two years now and I'm not leaving anytime soon. For me, the location is unbeatable. I like that Gymit is inexpensive and a no frills experience (I just want to lift and that's it!) I come in, work out, and leave. I do see other people socializing, sometimes with staff, so there are some good community vibes around. The equipment variety has increased recently and I can see the owner is trying to add more options for members, which is great. More dumbbells, more benches in the dumbbell area, a new hack squat machine, booty builders (lol @ following Instagram trends). Anytime I've needed anything, I've felt heard and taken seriously. Once there was a cable machine missing a carabiner so it was rendered useless. I was stuck waiting because it was rush hour and all other cables were taken. I brought it to the attention of the staff and they confirmed my observation, went to order more carabiners, and then followed up with me to know it would be remedied. Also, I emailed one time about the pull-up bars to request flat, smooth pull-up bars be installed. The response I got had some fair reasons for why that wasn't possible, but included an offer to cover some of the etched bars with tape. Sure enough a week later there was tape on some of the bars which is much better for me than the rough etching. I do still wish they would add straight, smooth pull-up bars somewhere...all the ones they have are etched and/or angled which limits what you can do. But, with such a convenient location and price I'll accept the compromise. If you live nearby, this gym is pretty hard to beat. Do come in and take a tour if you haven't been and are considering. A lot of the pictures on yelp are of the Watertown gym which I haven't personally been to, but I understand is much bigger. read more

Cancelling this gym is an absolute nightmare. I moved away and a month before hand went in person to cancel. The from desk assistant helped me send an email to their support to cancel my membership. I moved away and a months later was still getting charged. I called and complained to the assistant at the gym they apologized and said it would be fixed and here I am months later still getting charged. They won't reimburse me and won't remove my card from the file. Do not join this gym if you do not plan to stay. Horrible. read more

DO NOT GO HERE. Tried to cancel my membership over 2 months ago, had sent an email to cancel and received confirmation and was STILL charged for 2 months. The company had also sent out email telling members they could not freeze their accounts during the beginning of covid, so everyone was being charged. I had spoke to the manager and he refused to give me refund as "it was not the companies fault and they only had a few employees, how were they supposed to monitor every email sent". After 20 minutes of the manger yelling and talking over me on the phone, he concluded that an email is not proper documentation, but then would ONLY verbally confirm my canceled membership WITHOUT a refund, as a again they don't know what to tell me. Lots of good equipment to use; never have to wait. COVID safe, as everyone wears masks. Got recommended by a friend who pays $25/month, only to come and have the price suddenly increase to $40/month. Good gym but a bit on the expensive side for me, since I don't go every single day. EDIT: Thanks for the reply, updated my review to 4 stars. There's a cheaper membership for $13 biweekly you can pay for if you're planning to go here long term instead of a month by month basis. Thought it was good until they were arrogant and rude to me because I had a bad hair day and didn't want my picture taken that day. Apparently they make notes about these things and hold it against you if you ever tried to bring up their employees being rude. It's like being in a courtroom, they have no problem calling their customers liars regardless of the bad treatment. Therefore after telling their over testosterone manager Kyle he was rude, the operations manager Steve, was even further rude calling me a liar and then canceling my membership keeping all of the yearly fees / membership cost I paid. Therefore if you want to be treated like garbage, exploited, lied to, and then canceled because you spoke your mind go here. If you don't go to planet fitness they'll treat you much better and for more inexpensive costs. Whatever happened to good customer service, ever since covid everybody thinks they can treat people however they want. Gym It is the absolute best value in the area. For someone who doesn't need a juice bar or pool and just wants to get a lift in, this gym is fantastic considering the price! It's very clean and has every equipment and machine that you'd need. I do have to go at rush hour (5-7pm) because of my work schedule, and while it's definitely busy, I haven't had any issue with not getting in the workout that I planned. Locker rooms and showers are also very clean! You can also upgrade to the premium membership and get perks like massage chairs and guests for not that much more $/month. I was worried about moving to Boston and finding an affordable gym with ample equipment, but this has been perfect and I recommend to everyone! GymIt is a great facility for solo fitness go-ers. The gym is clean, has plenty of equipment (even kettlebells and TRX bands), and is well-lit giving the gym more of a studio feel than a basement. For a "budget" gym, you're getting more than you pay for compared to some other chain gyms with similar monthly prices. Unfortunately I canceled my membership due to their policies on partner/group workouts. Here's the story: I signed up for GymIt based on reviews and location so my friend and I can workout together that's closer to her housing. She wanted to workout with me because she knew I was experienced and can give her guidance. The front desk staff didn't bother to give me a tour, but I knew what I was looking for in terms of equipment, and it had about 90% of what I was looking for (it has no bench or squat racks fyi). On the first day after our first workout together, I was scolded by the manager about their "no training" policy. I wasn't aware there was such a policy in place, especially since I told the guy at the front desk prior to signing up that "I am looking for a gym that my friend and I can work out at." I was confused, so I asked him to give me details on the policy and what he meant by "no training", because I was NOT training. I was doing my routine that I've done for over 14 months, and my friend is simply following my routine. According to their policy, if I showed anyone how to perform exercises and/or wrote in a log, then I was "training". First, that is my personal log, not hers, and I was recording my progress. Second, since she has no/little experience with exercises, not showing how to properly deliver proper form and etc. would not only render the exercise ineffective, but can also be very dangerous (ie. letting someone do bench presses that has never done a single rep in their life). I admit that I did do more talking than workout on our first day since I had to explain what each exercise is to her (as well as a lot of spotting), so I kindly acknowledged their policy. The second time it happened, I once again ask the manager to define what "training" is to them, because this time I did no training whatsoever. Everything we did today my friend already knows how to do, and I was working side-by-side and sweating it out with her , so needless to say I am extremely confused and a bit irritated. In response, the manager said that because I had a clipboard and writing things down, I was "training". Um, no. Almost every dedicated fitness individual has some way to track their progress and routines, so simply writing anything down does not justify "training" anyone. Plus it was MY log that I was writing in, not hers, and if he cared to even peek at my log, he would have known. From his explanation, I then asked what the difference between "spotting" and "training" is, because that's the most I've done with her when I wasn't pushing reps myself. In response, he said, "when the weight is falling down because she can't do another rep." Again, um, no. Spotting does not mean to just simply catch a weight as it's falling. Spotting also includes the reassurance of proper form. Having someone watch you do the reps and correcting you is proper spotting. What's the point of spotting someone if the first 17 reps were incorrectly done and on the 18th rep he's too smoked doing incorrect nonsense? So after 5 minutes of trying to understand their policy and the manager pretty much ignoring any additional questions, here's the low-down with examples for you hopefully to understand their "policy": - If you're coming in with a friend or group, you can NOT have anyone dictate what the group will do as a workout. According to their policy, this is "training". Everyone will have to do their own routine, or quietly mimic someone's workout so you don't violate anything. - If your friend(s) is doing an exercise incorrectly, you can NOT tell him/her that he/she is doing it wrong, even if it's a safety risk. According to their policy, this is "training". - On that same note, no one is allowed to ask anyone questions regarding exercises, fitness, diet, etc. either save for their staff. According to their policy, this is "training". - If you carry a personal log with you and you're working out with a friend(s), be prepared to answer some very uncomfortable questions, because they will stop you on your way out, assume you are "training" someone and tell you not to do it again. I understand their push for safety, insurance reasons, etc., but their "no training" policy can easily be mitigated simply by having their staff monitor each area and make sure that everyone is using the machines and doing the exercises correctly. What they're doing is their way of enforcing safety without proper monitoring (I've seen their cleaning staff wander the gym way more often). Bottom line, solo = good gym. However, if you're looking for a gym that you and your friends can go to without harassment, try somewhere else. read more

I've finally join a gym. After months of deliberating and procrastinating, I did it. My rotation buddy (who have gym commitment issue) have tried almost all the gym in Boston (spending upwards of $90 a month) finally settle on this gym. She love the fact that it's basically 24/7 (weekend is more like 20hr a day but still). I join because it's down the street from my rotation. It's also super cheap for a gym in Boston. Regular membership is $25, and VIP is $30. So I got the VIP to try to get my friend (free guest on weekend) to come workout w/ me but I have 0 friends I guess. Also if you buy drinks it's cheaper w/ the VIP discount. Plus free classes + 1 free hr of personal trainer. But I use none of that because I'm scared of being judge for my fat-pack. Anyways enough about me. More gym-review: The gym hours is great for those who work until 9pm but still want to get a quick workout in. Or those who randomly wake up at 4am and can't get back to sleep. It's conveniently located on the B line + bus 57 so if you're too lazy to walk to your gym, it's easy to get to. There's a lot of different type of machines. The gym isn't super big, but there's always something available you can use. Usually friendly staff that say Hi to you. Lots of lockers in the locker room, though random members don't always put a lock on it so it's annoying to open your favorite locker # only to find someone's random stuff there. Best gym bargain in town if you don't care about having classes. $20 per month for the standard membership, or upgrade to the Value membership for about an extra $7 and you can bring a guest with you EVERY TIME. And yes, you can bring the same guest with you each time. Since I use a gym only a couple times a month, I piggy back on my husband's membership and for the extra $7 can go with him anytime I want (I know, aren't we cute?). There is ample, modern equipment, in good working order. I've never waited for a treadmill or elliptical; usually there are dozens available. The machines don't have individual TV's, but there are about a dozen large TV's up on the wall. Most of the cardio machines have iphone plug-ins, but they all have the old iphone connector. I have been going here for almost 2 years now, and they've had all the equipment I've ever needed. I'll miss this gym when I move next month. It's the cheapest gym around and it's not a "you're getting what you pay for" type deal. It's a clean gym with hardly ever any equipment needing repair. There aren't any guys huffing and puffing, yelling as they drop weights (that shit is annoying). The rewards points are an interesting incentive, albeit hard to obtain... I only have a measly 645. Give it a go, they also give nice sign-up incentives as well. read more

Great spot for this neighborhood. Cheaper, cleaner, bigger + brighter than BSC and other gyms in the area. Being able to bring guests for free on weekends is a huge perk since I have frequent visitors to the city. I come here sometimes with the lovely Lauren M when I'm too unmotivated to go to the gym myself and am taunted by promises of tart froyo after. Plus, with a name like GymIt! (it's a noun AND a verb), who can say no? Parking is $1/hour in a covered garage behind the building, which I suppose could add up if you go a lot. But membership is something like $20/month, or $27 to bring a guest. It's a nice facility with a bunch of arc trainers, elipticals, bikes, rowers, and circuit training stuff. They have a studio area that looks like it would be perfect for group classes, but I don't believe they offer any. I think they're open pretty okay hours and everything is super clean. This Gymit is incredibly inexpensive. The hours are fantastic. Kind of? On Monday it opens immediately. This man should be running this place. Because the owner Matt Harrington, only cares about the bottom line. He will promise the world. Then change the terms. And on the weekends, we had to call Brookline to see if someone was coming. And we had several old people who where cold! And if you ever ask Matt Harrington to fix something. He will say you should buy a heart rate monitor. If you care about this feature. And he has allowed the staff to smoke weed outside. And people have actually smoked cigarettes in the bathroom. When I asked about why he hasn't put signs on the recycling barrel? He said that isn't important. The last GM who really cared was Lisa Dibona. But she quit at the end of 2018! And then he hired someone else. He was fired about 6 months later. And if you ever complain. He will not like this. And you will be pushed out. And when I complained 3 times about children sleeping on the treadmills on Sunday's. The answer was that the father was there. So I guess it's okay to let children sleep on the machines when you work out! And when I went to a much better gym. All my questions where always answered. And the place so incredibly clean! So you get what you pay for! And when my new gym closed in the middle of March. I only got charged for a half of month! Unlike Matt Harrington's Gymit! read more

Aw yeah, I am back and here to stay. So long, BU gym, so long. I went for the first time since my last review on Wednesday night. It was awesome. Real Housewives on the TV right in front of my AMT. Then, I went last night and the channels had changed. There was some wacked boxing/ wrestling match on and weird dudes kept hovering around my machine watching two men tangled in strange positions on the tv. Next time, I will observe what is on the tv and ask the customer service people to change the channel to Bravo before I start working out. Everything else is pretty much the same. I did notice that the staff people seem to walk around a lot and survey everything. No one approached me, but I thought it was kind of weird. Also, they only accept Visa and Mastercard. No Discover or Amex. Cry for all the cash back bonuses I am losing out on! read more

Trying out gyms in the area this one is quite nice. It is a basic gym without all the fluff which makes the price right. They have parking in the garage around back that is validated. I really liked the bathrooms and showers. They were clean and nice and kind of spa like. Not the hard plastic curtains. The space is nice for doing cardio and for weights. I tried a day pass and was going to sign up but found I could join Evolve for about the same price but get two locations based on where I live. If it doesn't end up working out than I will def be back. read more

If you are looking to save money and live in the Allston area, this is an easy choice. The facilities make the price sadly. The staff is not super friendly but not completely unapproachable. It's usually busier after work hours but usually there is at least a few cardio machines and weights available. The TV stations are usually on shows that are not awful to stare at if you need that kind of distraction. The locker rooms are really clean and the showers are pretty good, except there are no spaces to put your dry stuff outside. There are no classes except a training workshop the gym holds. There are random events happening, like free pizza or a rose giveaway for Valentine's Day. Good gym for budget crunches. read more

Here it is 2018 and am happy to say I'm still enjoying my membership at GYM IT'S.!!!! I lost more pounds and two size smaller; plus gained more muscle along the way and this has changed my lifestyle for the better.!!! BY working out on a regular bases, I can enjoy the things I love to do more often in my personal life.!!! I have more energy and have my blood pressure under control and my doctor is happy with my new changes, so it's a win, win all around for me.!!! Now I'm working on toneing up on my part and I'm slowly getting there , hopefully by this summer's end I will be closer to my goal.??? It's taken me three years to get this far, getting in shape doesn't happen overnight and if someone tells you differently don't believe them, It doesn't work that way people.!!! First you must be willing to put in the time.... two: learn to eat more health on your part by making little charges in the way you eat or what you eat on a regular bases.??? Great gym for the price. I went here for years but am cancelling because I found a gym in a better location. Something to know before you sign up: Twice a year they charge a pretty large "maintenance fee" ($20 for no reason) on top of whatever you're already paying, which is always a really fun shock when checking your credit card statement. I know that's standard practice for gyms but it's pretty slimy. Also, if you want to cancel your account, you're automatically charged for 2 more months of membership (so that's pretty much a $50 cancellation fee if you have the cheapest plan). read more

A lot of the negative reviews here are hilariously crazy given the membership prices at Gymit. 1) Cheap Equipment??? -- All of the equipment ranges from perfectly fine to well above average and they are adding new things at a steady clip. The most recent additions include an Olympic lifting area, replete with bumper plates, and a long strip of turf with a power sled. You won't find this kind of thing at almost any casual gym. The cardio machines are totally mundane but plentiful and in good working order. Gymit gets bonus points for having ergs which, for some strange reason, can't be found in every gym. One suggestion would be to get rid of some of the completely useless machines, like the side twist thing, to make better use of the limited space. Here are my price-adjusted ratings for equipment: Cardio: 4 stars Weights: stars 2) Dirty -- Not really. This is a city gym, not a spa in a 5 star hotel. On the cardio side, people are religious about wiping down the machines. In the weights section, not so much, which is to be expected. Germaphobes can do what other germaphobes have been doing since the dawn of time: towel on bench. Here are some gripes to go along with my value-based 4 star rating. -- I haven't seen the staff do a thing to enforce even the no weight-dropping policy. One jackass was dropping 300 lb deadlifts from his waist which sounded like artillery fire. An employee should have been on his ass right away. Instead, I had to bring it up at the front desk know and it took several more minutes until someone talked to him. The best part? This kid just ignored him and went right back to dropping weights. This is an extreme case but the everyday occurrence of dumbbells crashing down from benches is also unacceptable and completely unnecessary. Weights should go down the same way they go up, on the knees. Try it folks, your shoulders will thank you and you can put the dumbbells right where you'll want them for your next set. -- Many of the trainers seem legit but a few should be fired immediately for teaching technique that will cause injury. The most egregious examples include squatting with toes pointed forward and benching with arms at 90 degree angles. -- Gymit becomes a zoo after work and I'm guessing it's also packed out in the mornings. Once again, this is to be expected at these prices but it could be a deal-breaker for some. -- The above gets exacerbated by certain bros taking 10 minutes between sets to socialize or play with their phones (a known testosterone killer). Thank you ladies for being considerate human beings and generally knowing how to behave in public. -- And last but not least, the men's locker room often reeks of some of the most vile dumps that I've ever had the displeasure of smelling. Can we get some air-freshener cans in the stalls? The automatic ones could never keep up. read more

Returned to town for a short- term membership. New management, new hours, new layout, new staff, new policies, new app and new students. Unfortunately, not the same Gym-It I used to love for many years. Overcrowded with disrespectful 18-22 year olds possessing poor gym etiquette on their cell phones. The 'Gym-It Team', now consists of ONE friendly enough student who oversees the entire gym at night and sits in the back manager's office with his friends, leaving the large front desk abandoned. Some unprofessional, inexperienced and untruthful guy named Rickey Richard is both Trainer, Manager AND Regional Manager. Luckily, after ONE workout, and a bit of a run-around, I was able to CANCEL my membership and finally get my money back. Not an easy task considering all requests 'must' now be written and go through the generic support@gymit.com. In summary, Gym-It now makes the bankrupt BSC look good! read more
