This review is long overdue as I first darkened the doors of CrossFit Immense on my 48th birthday in September 2014. As you can see I'm giving this business and owner 5 stars. 5 well-deserved stars. If you're new to CrossFit like I was, I can't think of a better "box" (that's crossfit vernacular for "gym") to go to in order to try out the regimen to see if you like it. Having previously relied on my own gym routine of lifting weights and doing cardio, I wasn't seeing the results I thought I should be seeing and I wanted to shake up my routine and try something different. I quickly felt comfortable and over a day or two I was no longer concerned about my appearance or lack of skills. There are some seasoned athletes at every crossfit box, but my experience is that I see athletes at every stage of skill and fitness at CrossFit Immense. Lyman is the owner and principal trainer here, and he's very knowledgeable, personable and professional -- if you're starting out at a gym routine or even if you're a seasoned weight-lifter, it's always good to be well-coached -- you'll get that experience at CrossFit Immense. Coaching is an on-going, daily experience at a crossfit box, it's all part of your membership fees. I had never gone to a CrossFit gym before this one, I bought a Living Social deal to see what all the fuss was about! I have never been so pleased! Lyman is extremely helpful at getting all the moves down for each workout and help modifying things if you have specific injuries or cannot do the workout prescribed. Great gym with amazing staff. Clean and organized, always supportive. From day one felt comfortable and in "no judgment" zone. I have tried other crossfit gyms and have felt uncomfortable with movements and was afraid to get hurt. At crossfit immense Lyman takes pride in making sure his clients understand the proper technique and takes precautions for you to not get hurt. He will correct you if you are doing something wrong, it's like having a personal trainer there for you at all times :) Highly recommend! read more

I've been to quite a few Crossfit boxes, and I've done just about every "quick" or "DIY" workout there is. Bottom line is I know what I'm doing in terms of working out and I can tell you that Crossfit Immense is the place that I will call home from now on. First off, the atmosphere is exactly what you want when you're working out. It's hard to get results alone, so why even try? At Crossfit Immense I was welcomed in the very second I opened the door. Are you looking for competition? Then you will find it here. The two things that motivate me most in a workout are results and trying to beat the person next to me. Obviously, the results will come over time, but the camaraderie and competition you get with each WOD at this gym is unbelievable. One second you're trying to beat the person next to you, and the very next you're cheering them on to finish the workouts. People were yelling at me to finish before they even knew my name, and that's a reassuring feeling. The last thing I want to talk about is price. Folks, in terms of working out, yes Crossfit is a bit steeper in price than most other places. However, Crossfit Immense is actually priced cheaper than most other gyms in the Portland area and you get a larger space and more equipment to utilize. Not to mention the fact that you have someone write all of the workouts for you, gives you an online program to track your results and makes sure that you are making the best use of the one hour of time you have. Crossfit takes away the "I don't have any time" excuse because there are schedules to follow and a lot of time frames to fall into. This place is the real deal. read more

I started at CrossFit Immense about three months ago with a special need. I had shoulder surgery in February and am still in recovery but really needed the get my weight under control. I went in and met with Lyman since the gym is so close to my house and asked if he could help me with my needs and work with my limitations. He assured me that he could and indeed he has. He has coached me with my diet, modified my workouts to accommodate my shoulder and it has produced results. With his help and guidance I have lost 16 pounds since I have been there. Everyone there is so helpful and encouraging and it is truly like working out with your friends and family. read more

Wow, I can't believe it's been only five months since my first review to Crossfit Immense. I still hold true to my initial review as this gym is amazing. The coaches are fun and support you the entire way. Since my first review, I switched gyms to cut down on fuel cost and it was a hard decision but I "drop in" every now and again and it's like I've never left.. You'll love every minute of the WOD (workout) and you'll want more the following day... Give him a call or stop by and give it a whirl. Crossfit, it's good for the body! I was very nervous upon arrival of my first CrossFit class. However, after my first class I was feeling much better about it thanks to Lyman and Kelsey. They really care about your form and that you are doing it the right way. I never thought I would do crossfit or lift barbells, but crossfit immense made me a believer. I started coming after buying a Groupon (which is a great deal for a 10 or 20 class pass for very cheap), and I was really impressed with the coaching here. Coach Lyman did a great job of explaining and demonstrating all of the movements and exercises and really put an emphasis on mobility and doing the movements safely, as opposed to doing things too heavy or too quickly in the beginning. There are modifications for all fitness levels and I never feel awkward about not being able to do an exercise as written. Definitely a focus on functional fitness, mobility, and growth in a safe, comfortable, yet challenging setting. read more

I have been to a few crossfit gyms over the past few years and this one is by far the best! Lyman teaches you the lifts and goes over the proper form before each class. No matter your athletic ability or skill, Lyman makes you feel comfortable and still pushes you to your limit. You get a great workout everytime!! Kelsey and Lyman (they own the gym :) ) make you feel extremely welcome and comfortable. The atmosphere at this gym is awesome! I would highly recommend this gym to everyone! Bought a Groupon pass. First class here, everyone were super friendly. The instructor was easy going, and very pleasant. The class was quite big but there's lots of room to move about and get it done. There's s real nice camaraderie and members seem to interact and know each other well. Lyman forced me to do this! Naw, kidding! This is my second attempt at crossfit. I totally enjoy pushing my body to its limit and crossfit does that for you! I have be coming to Immense 3 days a week for about 4 weeks (got one of those 20 class groupons) and I have seen so many results! I like this gym because everyone does what they can and Lyman is not afraid to push your limits if you let him! I signed up for the rest of the year because if I can see results in 4 weeks, imagine the success I will have in 10 months! Lyman and Kelsey are two great trainers and they make you feel at home. This is a long over due review. This is by far one of the best gyms I have been to. I was a little apprehensive about the price but, glad I signed up well worth it! I mean I would spend that kind of money on a bar tab over a weekend, might as well get a motivating gym with awesome People and whole workout plan for the month. Lyman is very attentive and always helping me work on my form and developing proper snatching clean techniques. Where as I feel some gyms the coach doesn't really pay attention to you as much, this gym feels almost like I have a personal trainer. The staff and other members are extremely friendly. I would recommend this Gym to anyone looking for something more out of there workout. read more

Where do I even start?! I use to be a fairly active person once upon a time. For awhile I focused solely on trying to put on as much weight as possible and lifted weights in a traditional gym setting. I learned that maybe my goal wasn't realistic for my size/frame and started to become burnt out in a traditional gym. I became involved in group fitness types of classes such as spin and other more cardio based classes which I enjoyed far more. Unfortunately I had a health scare followed by an injury that had me out of the gym for at least a year. For some crazy reason I decided to JUMP RIGHT IN and try crossfit now that I am trying to get back into the swing of things. Lyman and Kelsey have been so incredibly welcoming. Each workout they somehow or another are not only completely engaged with breaking down movements and helping me scale my workouts, they continue to offer support throughout the entire workout making sure I have proper form and giving me pointers on how I could improve. More often than not I am CRAZY sore and have to take at least a week off before I am able to go back for a class. As of now, I have been making it in twice a week. I cannot recommend this place enough. The knowledge and support I get each class I take is enough of a reason that I would highly recommend anyone and everyone to give it a shot no matter what your fitness level is. I had never tried CrossFit before and am a little older than most the participants. But Lyman our trainer (and owner) has been great. He starts with a great warm-up to ensure your muscles are ready for a good hard workout. Lyman then follows with very specific coaching on how to perform the daily moves so that they are safely performed. Next comes the conditioning sets. They are hard but doable even to those of us out of shape by performing the modifications he always suggests. Once the hard work is done, he finishes up with a good amount of stretching. An hour's workout really feels like you've accomplished something. I was worried that that these classes would be too extreme but the way Lyman coaches is very encouraging and most all levels of strength and fitness can get a great workout with him. I was visiting the Happy Valley area and I stopped by for a couple of workouts. I'm still fairly new to crossfit and Lyman helped me out with my technique on some of the lifts. I've never been a fan of working out at the gym (gets boring) but I like Crossfit for the fact that all you have to do is force yourself to show up and do the workouts (1 hour tops). The workouts are pre-determined and well explained by the coaches before you do them. After only 3 months of 2 - 3 days a week at Crossfit Immense I am already seeing and feeling results. The atmosphere at Crossfit Immense is very comfortable for all experience levels and the people who workout there as well as the coaches (Lyman and Kelsey) are very friendly and encouraging. I started Crossfit at 51 years old, never lifted prior to that. Become addicted immediately. The coaches at CFI are amazing. I never felt intimidated in fact quite the opposite. Lyman is such an amazing person he is always inspiring giving me a lot of attention. Cana is just as awesome. I just signed up for my third year. There are a lot of other boxes much closer to my house but I won't even consider leaving CFI. 5 stars for sure. read more
