I booked a room through Booking.com/OYO and paid in full. I received a call from the property, cancelling my reservation, due to maintenance issues. I still have not received a refund and cannot contact OYO. read more

We enjoyed the timeless pub-like atmosphere and the well crafted, reasonably-priced drinks while relaxing in comfortable chairs. We didn't have dinner there but it has been good in the past. I wish the bar area was a little cozier.

Our twin room was very well appointed and comfortable although bathroom was small and the single wardrobe was cramped. Overall though we were very satisfied for a one night stay. Our evening meal was beautifully cooked and presented, although our reserved table was in the centre of a family birthday party which made conversation difficult. It was a fairly noisy evening with parties but the worst late night noise came from the pub next door where bottles were thrown into bins into the early hours and shouting from their customers kept us awake. However, this hotel has great atmosphere, a good selection of drinks and an excellent breakfast menu. Would recommend it to anyone although perhaps not those with young children.

It has 39 comfortable rooms, two award winning restaurants and a late night cocktail bar. There are also a couple of conference rooms. The original cast of Last of the Summer Wine often used to stay here and there are many pictures of them dotted about the place. We once enjoyed a pleasant weekend staying in the Rivelaux suite, named after Baron Wilson of Rievaulx (Harold Wilson, former prime minister, who was born in Huddersfield). We had a toddler at the time, and he was also made to feel very welcome.

The beds were just a tad hard for our taste, but that's all I could possibly complain about. Everything else was great, especially the free WLAN (Swisscom!), great room service food (delicious burger with proper chips) and a tasty breakfast with bacon, bangers, hash browns and all sorts of fruit, cereal and pastries. Excellent value for money, especially when comparing it to what we would have paid for three nights in a hotel back in Switzerland. :-) Service was very attentive and friendy. Now that we're back home we miss being asked if we wanted a poached egg in a Yorkshire accent. A very pleasant stay.

I had to find another hotel. Booking.com confirmed the hotel had cancelled the booking but said I needed to see them about the refund so they are blaming each other. I booked the hotel the day before I was staying. Turns out that in the small print at the bottom of the Booking.com page they say a £200 cash deposit has to be sent via bank transfer 7 days before the booking. Obviously if you book the day before your stay you can't comply with that, but they accepted the booking. I didn't see this requirement and was driving down from Glasgow the next day. I had no missed calls but apparently they had been phoning me to tell me. I did pay in advance so 2 months later I've not managed to get a refund.
