I heard from a friend that the Rock Inn Hotel had been re-launched after a £1m refit with a…read morecut-price menu into the bargain, after all, these are the same team that have the Design House at Dean Clough and that takes some beating for quality and value for money.
I chose to book in advance to ensure that I would not have to wait for a table as I expected the weekend would be rather a busy time if everyone else had heard the good news.
I arrived half an hour before by booked time and sat down to a drink in the extremely comfortable and spacious bar lounge, overlooking the large rear car park and hillside beyond. The menu arrived a few minutes later and what a wondeful menu it was, too. Almost the level you might expect from a Michelin star restaurant but all available as part of the special deal menu although, as you would expect, some items carried a surcharge. This is still a good way to present a menu, as it allows you to go that bit further without having to bounce out of the menu into a la carte territory. The price was, by the way, £8.00 for two courses and £10.00 for three courses. Almost inconceivable when you consider the quality and presentation of the food.
Even though the bar was fairly busy, my feet were beginning to get cold and, i can tell you, if MY feet were getting cold, most other people's would have been feeling frozen, as I am not one that feels a chill so quickly.
Although, when I say quickly, I should point out that I was still waiting to order 1hr + 15mins after I had arrived, 45 minutes into my booked time.
I was eventually shown to my table in the conservatory dining room, which had good solid dark wood tables with low back, bucket type seats in assorted fabrics. The tables were fully laid out with fresh flowers on each. After being seated I was presented with a simple bruschetta hors d'oeuvre which, while very nice, somehow seemed a little over-the-top considering how long I had had to wait (probably while the chef was preparing these dainties for other tables).
The starter soon followed.
I had ordered a smoked salmon and crab salad, and it was wonderful. Shaped ito a circle, the salmon held in the fresh crab nicely and was surrounded by slivers of skinless cucumber in a light dressing. The circlet was topped off with a three-quarter eggshell, containing pefectly scrambled egg, which I poured out onto the top of the fish.
My feet were still feeling cold and this did spoil my enjoyment of the whole experience somewhat, though there appeared to be a number of other teething problems, as service did not seem to be running as smoothly as one would expect from expereienced restauranteurs.
Cutlery was forgotton, dropped, clanked around, as was crockery, making a little too much noise for the setting. Whilst there were a good number of staff around, I noticed that serving of courses to most tables was not syncronised closely enough to ensure that everyone was served at the same time, leaving some diners waiting a while until their fellow guests were served.
The main course I chose was roast beef and Yorkshire pud, with roast potatoes and a serving of fresh vegetables (the same portion served for one as for six).
The meal was excellent, although a little dainty if one happened to have a good appetite.
Definitely room for a dessert then!
I chose a pear frangipane with liquorice and chocolate sauce. It was delicious and not too dainty.
The bill was pleasing, as I had almost kept clear of the additional charges, but it would not have mattered had I gone all out on extras.
The place, irrespective of the lack of adequate heating, lacked warmth and friendly attention.
The food was excellent 8/10
Value for money 8/10
The service at table 5/10
The customer service and attention on arrival 2/10
As this was my first visit since the refurbishment, I will return to get a further take on The Rock Inn in a few weeks time to see if things have impoved once the crockery has settled!
They might just get 5-stars next time!
