The Wool Merchant was off to a good start before we arrived - after being let down elsewhere we were well looked after here.
This is one of those great local places - friendly, clean, more than a little northern with some Italian influences (I think it is part owned by Italians - the restaurant downstairs definitely is). The staff were great - from booking to leaving - with the added adventure of my locking myself out of my room inbetween - we were well looked after.
The rooms are good sized with proper pine furniture (none of this weird box-bed rubbish) and big bathrooms (proper baths and separate showers!). The hot water supply isn't perfect, to be honest (is it ever this far north??) but works with some fiddling. The walls are a bit thin too but the hotel is a quiet place, no noise comes in from outside. Which is good, because it seems Halifax becomes quite the party town after sundown.
Overall - much better than one of the semi-budget chain options you'd get for the same price. The restaurant downstairs is worth a lookin too - decent pizzas ahoy. read more
