It's a wonderful throwback to the days of a cheap, well done shine (currently $3). Just sit back, read the newspaper, and let Mel hook your shows up with a great shine. I'm pretty sure that he's always there, and even if someone's in the chair in front of you, you'll only wait a few minutes. Four stars for the shine, one more for Mel.

I decided to try New Hartford Shoes and Service since my parents still live in Utica, and I am very happy that I did. I guess there is a new owner and he was incredibly thorough. He repaired the issues that were requested, but he noticed some other issues that werent apparent to me and made sure that those issues were also repaired. During this visit I brought in a pair of leather heels that had an intricate design that was slightly damaged. I also had issues with the one of the heels. He matched the leather almost perfectly and you can't even tell the shoe was repaired. Unless I find a shop in Albany that has established the same level of quality standards and professionalism, I will most certainly continue to be a customer of New Hartford Shoe and Service.

Their work isn't cheap, but it's a good value--and, believe me, you're far better off paying a fair price for good work than you are getting a bargain price for work that you'll need to have redone later. Note, by the way, that they do great work with not just upholstery but wood as well, and, when they work on an antique wood pieces, they do a good job of maintaining patina.
