I had a very positive experience with Critter Cavalry Rescue. I picked out a dog online that I thought I wanted to adopt and filled out an application. I included photos of my home and yard, along with personal references and my vet's information. Judi contacted me to let me know that the foster mom of the dog I wanted felt that he would do best if placed in a home with other dogs. Unfortunately, I have two cats but no other dogs. At first, I was disappointed, but Judi then suggested a different dog and sent me the info on him. She put me in touch with his foster mom, and the rest is history. The transport from TN to VA was excellent, and Tim, the driver, kept me informed along the way. Coal is a perfect fit for our family, and while I've had him only four days now, I can't imagine life without him. I've dealt with other rescues in the past, and this experience truly stands out as the best. The fact that CCR chose not to give me the dog (I thought I wanted) because it was in the dog's best interest tells you all you need to know. During a very sad time in my life, I attended The MARS adoption event (2011) and adopted Skeeter from Critter Cavalry Rescue. I met Candace Giles there, who was very thorough in her background search of me, because I was adopting one of her fosters. I am glad she did. After speaking with Candace, I was touched by the countless hours and work that her organization puts in, to help animals in need. So, my husband and I began to foster for CCR. We also became "failed fosters" to Xena and Aries. A pair of GS siblings found underneath a bridge in Nashville, that were taped inside a box. The stories of these poor pups is heart-breaking! It was truly an eye-opening experience. You have no idea how hard it is to care for these (mostly dogs) for weeks and then having to give them back, because they are on transport to their forever homes. There are vet visits, sitting hours, acclimation, socialization, basic skills training. So much that the potential adopters do not see, goes on behind the scene. CCR is a wonderful organization, with many volunteers. Our Skeeter is going strong at almost 15! I would definitely adopt from Candace again, or even foster, if we still lived in TN. read more

I work with a rescue in Ala. that transports pets to New England, so I'm well aware of the costs involved. I can't say enough good things about Critter Cavalry rescue and couldn't have asked for a better experience as a first-time rescuer! Yes, they are very thorough and ask for a lot of information, but they do this to ensure the animals they rescue go to the right homes and don't have to endure any more trauma in their lives. If we had listened to all the negativity, we would not have Honey, our beautiful Pom Chiweenie, previously known as Treasure and let me tell you she has been a real treasure to us the last 5 plus months. We love her so much and couldn't imagine our lives without her! She had previously endured so much being found on the streets of TN alone and scared with puppies when she was just a puppy herself. I don't even want to imagine what she went through. CC worked with the local shelter to ensure she was saved, spayed, had most of her shots and went to a great foster while awaiting her forever home. Everyone we dealt with from Carol with the application process, Shannon who checked references, Karen who was part of New England area transport and helped arrange her interim foster mom Alyssa, have all been great. We were able to speak to Karen and FaceTime with Alyssa and Honey while still going through application process. We were lucky to pick her up only a couple hours from us, Tim and Harold were great with transport, and we had her home with us only 6 days after starting the process. Karen still follows up periodically to check on her. In my opinion, these volunteers go above and beyond to help these animals find loving, hopefully forever homes. I just adopted a wonderful rescue puppy through the auspices of this organization. I cannot sing their praises more highly. From the beginning of the application process through the final pick-up of our new fur baby from their transport operation, their attention to detail and genuine care for the dear rescues in their charge is ever so apparent. I had a very pleasant and somewhat easy experience with critter Calvary adopting my loving, sweet, calm flat coated retriever mix rescue. I was pleasantly surprised they checked all references. The only reason I can't give them a 5 star rating is the Vet records caused me to have to do some extra work on my part. I had to reach out to the foster for more info after I received the dog. The foster was very communicative and quick responses. I also didn't receive the rabies tag they have to mail it to me. The communication was great. The transport was seamless, but I expected to have the dog food the dog had been eating at the foster and a toy pr something to help him transition easily. Considering it is all volunteer based I understand the imperfection. for my first rescue experienc. I'd use this rescue again and refer others to them. We were a little nervous about adopting a 100lb dog who was a year old. Critter Rescue was so honest with us in calls after we were accepted to adopt him describing him perfectly. I was looking online for a kitten to adopt, I found a kitten on the website. We're I absolutely fell in love with now They have these filters, so you can look for specific Types my specific type was for a male kitten. When I found the kitten I was looking for and I thought everything was okay.I contacted filled up the forms and adopted this kitten. Come to find out the kitten is actually a female, and nobody at this organization or the previous foster parents ever decided to check the cats veterinary record, stating that the animal is actually a female. Everything that was posted online about this animal says he's male. When I asked gwen the lady that I adopted the cat through if it was a male, she said, yes. Now when I contacted the organization through email, I was ignored when I tried to text them about the issue. I've seen that my message were read and ignore it again. And finally, when I called candace simpson to try and resolve this issue.I was laughed at and hung up on. Unfortunate how this situation was handled by these people. read more

We just received our new family member, Sadie from Critter Cavalry Rescue. She is a Welsh Corgi/Chihuahua mix. It was the first time that we used the internet to find a pet and have it shipped for hours to get to us. We were a little concerned to start, but CCR quickly put our concerns to rest. The woman that we worked with (Judi) as superb! CCR made this a great experience from start to finish. First, they make sure the adopting family is a good match for the animal. Then, they make sure the animal is a good fit for the family. Our new girl was thoroughly checked by the vet to make sure she was in the peak of health - CCR sent all her vet records with her. Prior to receiving Sadie, she was so well cared for! The foster-mom Ada, was so helpful in providing the details about Sadie's personality and care. When we finally received her, it was as though we already knew her. Ada cared for Sadie as if she were her own - and it showed when we received her. The delivery van arrives over night, so be prepared - that's just how it's done. Ours new pet came after 3AM. The drivers were also quite personable. The van was clean and odor-free. I found a dog on Petfinder at animal control in Lawrenceburg TN. I called the the shelter and spoke the director, Renee. I explained that I lived in Ky and needed a couple of days to drive down to get her. She was so kind and said she would make some calls to see if a rescue could help me. Candace at Critter Cavalry and her fosters did just that! They managed to get her vetted, spayed and driven to Nashville where I picked her up. I would have never gotten this sweetie home without their help. I know that Critter Cavalry takes a high volume of dogs and cats in dire need of good homes. Running a rescue has to be exhausting on so many levels. I was lucky my dog did not have any serious health issues. In some cases they do and the shelter can't always make everything perfect but do their best. You must know the risks and be willing to commit if you adopt a neglected, abused or abandoned animal. I fostered for them (out of state) for 5 years. Nearly 70 dogs. We loved each and every one! Candace became a friend--she was super responsive to us if we needed something--put me in touch with a behavioral coach if there was an issue (i.e. pulls on leash or other small issue) and a vet if a medical issue, and made sure I had access to what I needed for the success of getting the dog placed. I loved that they really care about the dogs and gave them the care they needed. They don't just take the cute and healthy. They really Rescue! We ended up adopting one of our fosters from them. They are wonderful to work with and we'd still be doing it if we hadn't moved away from their adopting region. The weekly transport from TN to CT is operated by Tim (husband of co-owner of rescue) and another helper. They are the best! We lived an hour from where the transport passes through Maryland and it came around midnight. We were updated by Tim of the arrival time when he was enroute. Always a pleasure to see them! I adopted my dog (Laika) from Critter Cavalry way back in April 2013, and I was so happy with the experience and the group that I decided to foster for them. Laika is such an amazing part of my life, and in order to have found her way to me, someone needed to foster her, so I just wanted to give back and put that same energy back into the world. I've fostered well over 100 dogs in the past 8 years, and it's been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Sometimes fostering is stressful. Every dog is unique, and I think Candace and our other volunteers do a great job of matching up compatible dog personalities for my personal lifestyle. For example, I don't have a fenced in yard, so we know that high energy dogs that need to run around a lot will not be happy here. The thing that sets Critter Calvary apart from less reputable groups is that I never feel pressured to continue fostering a dog that is absolutely not working here. I never feel stuck with a dog. We have a wonderful network of local volunteers and there have been a handful of times when a dog is just not working well here, and we can almost always swap foster dogs, or step in and help eachother out somehow. It's really great to have that support system of people who have also worked with lots of different dogs that I can bounce ideas off of, or who will step in to help me out when I get overwhelmed. There have been times where I have too much going on in my life, and I take a short break from fostering, because I know that I just don't have the emotional capacity to be helpful to a dog, and Candace has never made me feel bad, or pressured me to take a dog when I am not in a good place. I never feel trapped with a dog that I can't handle. I have never had any experiences with the group that has led me to ever question their dedication to the health or care for a dog. The dogs have a long ride up to CT, and when they come up on transport, their have clean crates, the dogs aren't stinky, and it's absolutely obvious that Tim and his co-driver take excellent care of them on the way up and make sure that they're not sitting in filth or uncomfortable. Every dog that comes up has a clean bill of health before they get on transport, and has been vaccinated. These dogs all have different histories, some are owner surrenders, some are a basket of puppies that end up on someone's doorstep, but most are strays that come from overcrowded shelters and a ticking clock. Emergencies can happen, and the dog's health always comes first. I have an open dialog with Candace if I suspect anything is unanticipated is wrong, and we'll work together to either get a vet consult, a dog behavior consult, or in rare cases, a visit to the ER. I have never been put in a position where I quesiton anyone's dedication to happy, healthy dogs. A common complaint that I see is about phone calls. I'll be completely honest... I'm a millenial and I'm terrified of the phone. I also have a full time job and a life, and every few months, Candace has to kick me in the pants and remind me that the phone isn't my enemy and that I really should get better at calling people back quicker. Other foster parents have large families and life just gets in the way sometimes. We really do try to respond to emails quickly and respond to phone calls quickly, but all I ask is that people understand that we're all just human, we're all volunteers, and there's always some emergency somewhere that takes up our time, so maybe if you're applying for a dog that's already adopted, it's possible that you get put on the back burner for a minute for a response. We don't have a customer service center. We're just people. Be nice, send a follow up email and ask for an update. If you act like a jerk, there's a good chance we won't respond at all. Don't be a jerk. We're saving dogs here, relax. Rescuing dogs can be a thankless job, and my heart has been broken over and over by how terribly people can treat man's best friend. Sometimes I'll get a dog that has absolutely no reason to ever trust people again, but yet they do. Over and over. Dogs have this amazing ability to live in the moment and not hold a grudge. I am constantly humbled by their willingness to let go of their distrust in exchange for some cookies and a cozy lap. I am humbled by the absolute pure joy in their hearts when I come in the door. It's a constant reminder to myself that I also possess the ability to be that joyful if I could let go of past grievances. I struggle with social anxiety, but when I see a dog who has every reason to be afraid of humans absolutely melt into butt wiggles and a wagging tail and a big smile when they meet their new family, it's a reminder that I can't control other people, but I can control how *I* interact with the world. read more

First off, I completely understand this is a non-profit organization and they are likely very genuine in the fact that they are in it to help home animals vs profit off their donors. That being said, these people are the most unorganized bunch I have ever had to deal with. I'm surprised they haven't been investigated by the State and/or lost more animals than they have. They likely need more funding and more volunteers, but their leadership needs a fresh change or at least a vacation. These people are burnt out. I was also allowed to speak to the foster mom of my dog for an hour before I decided to officially adopt (he was driven up from TN to CT so I didn't get to meet him first!). She was so nice about all of my questions and even had questions for me which I appreciated. It was an experiance that has made us question adopting from a rescue. They were supplied with all the requested information, contacts and sources. We had one phone call which was around the dogs care outside. I conveyed that we were certainly open to what the best practice was considered, because we had the land to do it. Then 5 days without any response after repeated inquiries. When we finally heard back their decision was made with out further discussion and made on an scenario that was certainly solvable. Thier communication was less than ideal considering the emotional investment on all sides to look to give an animal a good home. I would not expect we would look to deal with them again. The newest member of my family, Max, was rescued from what could have been his last breath; an inhumane situation in another state. In addition, Max is a special needs dog; he's blind. I want to preface this with the dog we adopted is a good dog and we love her. We adopted our dog in February. We were told she's a great dane/whippet mix. We did a DNA test, she's half dane/half pitbull. Not a big deal, but we are a military family and some places we live have breed restrictions. We absolutely did not want a pitbull. The initial adoption process was fine. The foster gave us a call and was super nice, however (personality wise) the pup she described and the dog we got were very different. For instance, we thought she was okay with other dogs. She's been kicked out of day care for rough housing. We've hired a trainer, worked with her endlessly, tried to socialize her.. we've made progress, but weren't expecting to spend the time and money for the basics. She's also very protective of the home which has pros and cons. The biggest issue with our adoption was we were told the dog was spade. Last week we noticed our pup was in heat. Brought her to the vet, not spaded. We did receive paperwork provided by the rescue she was fixed, but after reading it, it's clear they never really checked. It says she has a scar. Now we're dealing with keeping a close eye on her until she's out of heat, paying for the surgery, and recovery after the surgery. It would have been nice for someone to say "hey we think she's been fixed, but not sure.." Again, we love our dog and wouldn't trade her for anything at this point. We just felt this rescue didn't really do their due diligence or know anything about the dog. We could have adopted from the shelter near our house for 40 bucks and gotten a pitbull mix who was actually fixed. We paid 600 for our dog. read more

I've never left a negative review but I'm feeling a little scammed. Sounds like they might be better for dogs than cats. They got back to me quickly about adopting. I adopted a black kitten from them about a year ago and she's wonderful. When she came home she clearly had a respiratory illness and was sneezing blood. Brought her to the vet and found out the microchip in her doesn't match the paperwork I was given. I contacted Critter Cavalry a couple times to try to get it figured out but never got a response. I ended up using the site where you register your microchip # to get in contact with the family that had adopted a different black cat from Critter Cavalry, and we swapped paperwork to match the microchips that are actually in our cats. So they had just mixed up the paperwork for two similar-looking cats, mistakes happen, all good. Warning: next paragraph's a little gross. A year later I contact them about adopting again, and once again they are quick to respond, contact references, and take the money. I adopt a second lovely cat that I love very much. Soon after adopting her though she's losing fur and vomiting blood and worms: signs of a very serious infection that didn't start recently. (gross part over) I obviously take her to the vet and it turns out she isn't microchipped at all. When I type the microchip number into the PetLink site it says it's already registered to another animal. Thankfully they're able to verify she has a tattoo to show that she's been spayed, but who knows what vaccinations she might be missing. Fool me twice, I guess. Still very happy with the cats I adopted - they're perfect of course. Just maybe don't trust the people involved. read more

My experience with critter cavary was only helpful ,reliable and reassuring While we applied initially for one rescue when she was already spoken for volunteer Carol Stewart immediately went to work to find the right match for us. Everything they told us about our little Scout was true she's sweet loving and easy-going and best yet came house trained. We never had a lap dog before (our former family dogs weighed at least six times this little one) but her foster mom gave us a pretty good idea of what to expect . I commend the foster mom as that family clearly took wonderful care of Scout before we adopted her. They sent us videos and many pictures (as did Carol)and we were able to talk on the phone as well as text each other. I realize it seems a little offputting on how you receive the dogs from this rescue (For us it was 3:30 in the morning and it was 10° out) however it was clear the truck was very clean and well-maintained and the dogs were not in any distress in the transport. This will be a long one...bare with me! After searching and searching for months I applied for what was listed as a "7 y/o Shih Tzu." They claimed she was house trained and was an elderly owner surrender from a high kill shelter. I applied, within days my references were called. Both of my references reported only being asked if they thought I was a responsible pet owner and how long the dog would be alone a day, both calls less than 60 seconds. My vet references were never checked and almost immediately I was called and hustled into a next day transport. I was connected with the foster mom who they had claimed had her for a month, she reported the same..."sweet girl, house broken, and 7 y/o who had been vetted and was up to date on shots." Fast forward to the cost...I get an invoice for $1100!!! I could not believe that price for a dog of that age but at that point we were already in love so I agree. I am then told they only accept PayPal friends and family...anyone who shops online knows this is a HUGE red flag. I let them know I would not pay unless it was protected through goods and services particularly that sum of money and I would not be adopting. They finally agree. We get there to get her...immediately notice she is definitely a mutt of some sort with extremely bowed front legs (poor girl), appears younger than 7 and is infested with fleas. Within 2 days of having her home she has 2 seizures. Off to an emergency vet we go. Testing and scans deduced that she had a seizure disorder and low and behold was only 4 years old. In reviewing her records that came with her with the vet she had not had any shots or anything until the day I committed to adopting her despite having been fostered for a month. We've had her now for 3 months and she is impossible to house train (just another lie) and this past weekend had to take her to Cornell ER for what we now know is a bladder tumor. I am now $3k deep in a dog that is truly the sweetest thing but not at all what was portrayed. I thank God every day she got lucky enough to be with folks who are willing to make this commitment both financially and in caring for her. This has been a very hard lesson and I really should have trusted my gut! Even if they didn't know any of her health concerns I would still be concerned with the amount of money charged and the little checking they did on my application. DO NOT adopt from this "rescue!" I do not believe for a minute they are a true non-profit. Working with Critter Cavalry was a pleasure. For anyone trying to adopt a pet, i'm sure you've experienced the difficulties trying to work with some of the rescue groups. I found Critter Cavalry to be responsive, forthright and very well-organized. Candace stayed in communication and was a delight to work with as i found my way with the adorable little dog i adopted thru them. I absolutely love this organization from the bottom of my heart. In March of this year i adopted my best friend, Glory. Although im in NH and Glory was in TN, it was surprisingly comforting talking to the foster mom. It made me feel like I knew her before i got her! I'm so in love with her and i'm so happy. I started doing volunteer work and fostering with the organization and i really got to know the people. They truly care for the animals. I highly recommend! read more

Very Upset. I had to put my 8 month kitten down due to FIV, that wasn't disclosed as well as ringworm. Problems started from the start. They had messed up his paperwork and actually told us that we were getting a female. After that was fixed, we still received the wrong paperwork of another cat's records. Apparently they had been treating the ringworm and decided to stop the treatment halfway so we could get the kitten sooner, but didn't let us know. I had noticed it and reached out and they confirmed it was indeed ringworm. This should have been explained so I could keep an eye on it. This has been a nightmare. We had lost out family cat of 13 years and wanted to get another. We were not ready to deal with losing another cat so soon. I understand there are cats with FIV that deserve a home, but people need to be aware that is what they are getting into. This has been terrible for Binx and our family. read more

I have been reading through these reviews good and bad. Need to add my own as someone involved with CCR. The bad reviews sadden me that these people had bad experiences. This rescue is a volunteer based rescue. There are people who foster, people who drive, people who handle paperwork, people who check references and do verifications, people who train/rehabilitate, and shelter directors (not part of the rescue) that keep in contact with Candace for help in moving shelter residents. When dealing with a "volunteer" based rescue, there are a whole plethora of different personalities because the individuals who volunteer are different. For anyone who has been employed, you will understand that personalities don't always mix and when one person is "rubbed the wrong way", another may be just fine. Perception is different for different people! As for Candace Giles, every moving part in the rescue goes through her, coordination, decision, scheduling, planning, action, etc.... like moving puzzle pieces around trying to complete the picture. Hopefully anyone can see how time consuming and at times difficult this must be. I am sure it can be frustrating as well. For those who complain because an email is not answered fast enough or she has not gone out of her way for them, just remember that she deals with hundreds of people. Mistakes do get made sometimes due to the pure volume of animals being moved through the rescue, but we are all human. There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle and a lot of people playing. Especially when many animals are transported hundreds of miles to their new adopters each week. Seeing accusations that the rescue or Candace is money hungry and they don't care about the animals is just not accurate!!! Although it is not mine or anyone else's business, if she does take a salary, it is perfectly legal regardless of the non profit status. I know the woman and know she spends j98% of her time on CCR business. As for complaints about the adoption fee, I personally have been surprised by the amount of money that has been spent to help animals have a good life and to "just live". One of my own foster pups is requiring a specialized surgery out of town that in the end will most likely total $10k in Vet cost. I have heard stories from other fosters of the same nature. I was flabbergasted when I found out the cost but Candace did not bat an eye about it and just planned to help that dog regardless of the cost. The adoption fee is high but that is there for a reason. If you are not willing to pay the fee then go somewhere else to adopt. There is no need to make mean or snarky reviews when you are uninformed. Lastly, if you adopted a sweet pet from this rescue and it was unknowingly sick or became ill, I am truly sorry this happened. Where do these animals come from..... shelters, overwhelmed breeders, hoarders, unsuspecting people finding puppies/kittens under their deck or wild in the woods, places of employment from again strays, abandon buildings, people not wanting their pets anymore and looking for a place to give them up. etc..... You get the picture. Many times they come in lacking... parasitic, heartworm positive, flea infested, sick, underweight, anemic..... They are cared for and made healthy prior to adoption to the best of our ability. Dogs/cats receive a thorough Veterinary exam (and testing) and any treatment necessary prior to being adopted. Some of them are not in foster homes for very long and we foster parents may not be aware of any underlying issues prior to adoption. I WILL NOT believe that ANYONE in this rescue would deliberately send a sick animal to a new home. From what I have experienced, the volunteers in this rescue care too much! Do you honestly think we would be volunteering if we didnt? I have been fostering with this rescue for 18 months now and 78 (all) of my foster dogs have found amazing homes with great families and several of those keep in touch with me!!! Soooo, if you have had a bad time with CCR, apologies that things were not better for you, but if you are angry because you expected to receive specialized treatment above and beyond the rest of the people wanting to adopt, then that is on you. We make every effort to make people happy but you cannot please everyone all the time. For those who claim this rescue does not care about animals and is only about making money could not be further from the truth!. read more
