I had no idea until this last one (late June 2022) that there were so many quality galleries on the UES. This one was amazing! Most of the tribal art there was aboriginal Australian along with a Korean artist. The curator did a great job explaining the background of the artists and the art itself snd we just had a great time. While a small space, there was so much beautiful works to see. Definitely will be coming back and highly recommended!

It's easy to walk past and forget it's here or not notice, unless you're a fan of art galleries like I am. I've been here many times and I was here recently. I'm recommending art lovers plan a visit. It's also much more of a specialty gallery catering to specific types of art: when in comes to modern master tapestries and ceramics, this is the place to go. Jane and Charles and extremely knowledgeable and have amassed quite the collection (or should I say inventory?). They have truly beautiful pieces - even if you have not been considering these mediums, they are still definitely worth looking at. Be forewarned, however, that both Jane and Charles LOVE to talk. So be ready to chat and be in the gallery for a little while. You'll be glad you went.

Founded in the 1920s, this family owned gallery is housed in an impeccable French neo-classical townhouse. Matisse: The Pursuit of Harmony (April 9 - May 22, 2026): what a treasure to spend hours slowly studying and admiring Matisse's paintings, drawings and sculptures in person. I overheard someone from the gallery giving a private tour say that a majority of the works were loaned to them from private collections (can't recall correctly but I think only 6-9 pieces were from museums). I had enough time to go back to view paintings that really made an impression on me, especially L'Idole [The Idol], 1906, oil on canvas.

The security guards were so nice and welcoming, and even though the galleries were truly elegant, no one seemed snobby or distant. Most people - both staff members and participants - just seemed happy and excited to be there for this historic art experience. The galleries themselves were incredibly beautiful and - from a purely architectural standpoint - worth seeing. If you know someone who is into stunning buildings, then def take them there on a friendship or romantic date. Though this particular exhibit was a real treat in and of itself. People were pointing at various paintings and sculptures and going crazy over them. Perhaps the most amazing thing about this free exhibit, is that you don't need a reservation nor a membership to see it. One can literally show up without a ticket, stand in line and get in (when their time comes). Bravo to Acquavella Galleries for making impactful art and artistic education so accessible to the general public. It felt much like a museum with many fossilized bones, items from the sea, and taxidermied exotic animals, including two lions and an albino peacock. The most expensive items are in glass cases but there is plenty that can be touched and held. I was quite surprised that my husband didn't purchase more that he did while we were there. The people working in the store were friendly and knowledgable and we enjoyed speaking with them. Evolution is definitely worth a stop.

The appearance of these portraits kind of reminds me of a persian rug, but it's still pretty neat. Matthew Krishanu: Falling Into Place: The setting of these paintings is in South Asia. There is a variety of banyan trees and religious figures. Jaiik Lee: Still In Flux: The vessels are painted in a variety of porcelain colors. The physical appearance of these jars are identical to hot air balloons and the vessel at Hudson Yards. The first floor and second are currently shucks & aww where functional objects are infused with humor and visual wit, where context and function meet. Where the second floor presents and represents the mundane to be extraordinary. And the show stopper- the golden rain drops, each suspended making a fantasy look. The 3rd floor had three different artist presented coherently together, probably what I liked best about the gallery, the whole room was collective. The shop is exactly what its name promises--an entire world of miniature rooms, furniture, and tiny accessories--but what makes it worth visiting is the sheer charm and craftsmanship packed into such a small space. Even as someone who doesn't collect dollhouses, I found myself appreciating the detail and creativity on display. The shop is filled with incredibly detailed miniatures and tiny, beautifully crafted pieces that are fun to look at even if you're not a collector. If you're already into miniatures, this place is probably a dream come true. No one really interacted with me while I was there. So the visit was more like browsing quietly on my own. It wasn't unfriendly, just hands-off. Still, if you're in the area, it's a quirky little spot that's worth a quick visit--especially if you enjoy unique shops or want to see some impressive miniature craftsmanship.
