There is a posting not to feed them because they can get sick. I think someone must have fed one of them because he was lying pretty much lifeless in the grass. Po thang! There's lots of camping areas, group picnic sites, a boat ramp, disc golf, walking trails (um negative for me), equestrian camping, a dining hall, swimming area, fishing pier, parking everywhere and lots of BUGS!!!!

We went on a Monday afternoon, it wasn't busy, less than $20 for my family to enjoy the day and beat the Texas heat. The swimming hole is a man-made spring fed lake. There's a couple diving boards (one is a high dive), a setup net for water volleyball, a BLOB and plenty of extra room for swimming. Plus I was told they are going to add a couple big slides for next year. Beautiful scenery and lots of places to get shade (with tables) for picnics or cooking out. Bathrooms are nice with a small shower (shower could use a little upgrade but it was suffice for its purpose). Friendly owners and staff. Overall great place to spend a summer afternoon. I highly recommend a trip for the family! Tips: bring life jackets if you plan to do the blob. You can not do it without one and they are not provided (although you can purchase one for around $15). Careful walking in the grassy areas...there are stickers. Camping is only aloud for RV's. Daily admission for swimming is $4.50 (free for two and under) and $2.50 to park. AND the park is dog friendly, which is a bonus for many.

Merry Christmas! Didn't want to waste the day by staying secluded at the apartment all day. I…read morewanted to go hiking and to enjoy a cigar next to a campfire. All accomplished...woohoo! The only drawback is I had to rent a campsite for the day in order to get a fire blazing. Kind of sucked since I wasn't planning on spending the night. Oh well! It was all still worth it as I supported nature and TPWD. The hiking trails were challenging and invigorating. Thankfully they were also very clearly marked. They were a challenge with all the natural rock and rock cliffs. Penitentiary Hollow was the main attraction of the hike. Wow, Lake Mineral Wells rocks with awesomeness! Please camp here!

I am older and have less than great knees so I sat out the trip down into the canyons. But the views at the top were breathtaking. The family had a great trip.

Been visiting Possum Kingdom Lake through good times and bad, sunshine and drought, storms and…read morefires. Still it perseveres as one of the most popular and beautiful lakes in the state with a pretty vibrant community. Our good friends have a house on the very far end of the lake, so up until recently, there was no water for a couple years. All dried up and eerie.... Luckily the water levels are back up and they can return to their normal out-on-the-water lives, which means I can too! Our friend has seen the water levels change throughout the years, and he says it always comes back. Possum Kingdom is super festive on the 4th of July with great firework shows, and they also have diving competitions. Hell's Gate is probably the most popular natural attraction -- lots of cliff diving/jumping. The scenery is quite pretty, especially for Texas, and the stars on a clear night are bright and beautiful.

The people running the campground were friendly and helpful. The only thing that was inconvenient was the distance to the water spigot from our rig (approx. 40ft, thankfully we had an extra hose) and there is no sewer access at individual spots. There are however a few stations within the campground to use before you leave. There were also a lot of people with young children, younger adults partying, and the occasional car going through with loud music blaring but for the most part everyone seemed to respect the quiet hours (after 10pm.) Overall, I am happy with our decision to spend a few days here and would do it again!
