I'm not a huge fan of northern French cuisine as it tends to have too much dairy in it for my taste; however Cote are very amenable to offering alternatives where possible so I didn't have much trouble finding something acceptable. Their lunch and early evening menu is very good value for money; however we were too late to partake of that on the Friday evening so it was a la carte and the specials menu all the way! It was starting to get busy but the staff seemed to be coping well - at least until they tried to serve us with the wrong set of starters... things went slightly downhill after that. Next, my side dish of butternut squash failed to arrive with my main course of hake. Our server was very apologetic of course, and once remedied it arrived fairly promptly - or at least before the fish went cold. The next hiccup was with the order of our second bottle of wine. The first had been a complimentary one that you get on your return visit if you register with them on their website, so naturally we took full advantage of that! However, when the wine waiter brought the second bottle (recommended by the house), he erroneously said it was a Languedoc wine, when in actual fact it was from the Loire. That's a pretty basic mistake for a wine waiter to make, and blaming it on his line manager is a pretty feeble excuse that smacks of poor training. Then another flask of water arrived, although we hadn't even started the first one as they had failed to provide water glasses! Oh well, we'll just carry on with the wine, shall we? We had enough room for dessert, and at this point our ever-apologetic server surprised us by offering a half-bottle of dessert wine for the table at her own expense. Jolly nice it was too. Clearly they were having a bad night when we visited; however the actual food was top notch, the staff could not have been more attentive and apologetic, and they did their utmost to sort things out. I don't blame them for the cock-ups and it certainly will not stop me from enjoying the delicious food here in future.

You are greeted immediately by a cheerful and charming server--the kind who can be friendly without seeming intrusive and enthusiastic without seeming phony. The menu is adventurous and authentic, with specials that include the likes of frog's legs. It is a joy to find a restaurant that doesn't kowtow to local tastes but instead does what it says on the culinary tin. The chef really knows his stuff and delivers bold, rich, FRENCH flavours that melt in your mouth. But be forewarned--the portions are also authentic. A bit smaller than what you might normally find in a Scottish restaurant. But as French food is swimming in fat, that's probably a good thing. The pre-theatre menu is a steal, but if you miss that there is also a standing tasting menu where you can get any three courses for 19.99. The portions are a bit smaller than the a la carte, but the price is right. There are also small carafes of wine on offer, for those nights when you want a bit more than a glass but not a whole bottle. (What nights are those?) Should you find yourself in Perth, make a reservation at this deservedly popular little gem.

We went for lunch about 1.30ish on Friday afternoon. It was really busy but luckily there was a table free. The lunch menu is £14.50 for 2 courses and I thought it was really good value. The food was sublime (not what you would expect in Uddingston!). I had a Butternut Squash Veloute with a poached egg and some a parmesan twill. Watching all the food programmes going, I had saw this made a few times and always wanted to try it. It was soooo good. Basically it is just a fancy soup but the beautiful poached egg and the veloute were so delicious and creamy. I then had slow braised beef with mash potatoes, glazed vegetables and gravy. There was a huge portion of delicious soft beef. The mash was creamy and yummy. All in all, it was one of the best dishes I have had in a long time. We then shared a Banana sticky toffee pudding as we were too full to have one each. The sponge was lovely and soft and the bananas were caramelised on top. Truth be told, I could have probably ate this myself looking back. Staff were lovely and attentive. I never tried any wine but they had an extensive list. Go here if you want amazing food at a reasonable price.

My favourite however still has to be French, from classic Escoffier to the more rustic I love the way in which they seem to be able to celebrate produce. After a walk to the Castle Terrace Famers Market Steph and I decided that lunch out would be a nice reward for our newfound healthy lifestyle and gym going. In search of reasonably priced and yet reasonably healthy food we came across L'escagot Blanc. With 2 mains for £10.90 this was ideal for us. Once you have a chance to sit down and take in your surroundings you are taken by the charming, rustic French decor. All of the staff are French and greet you in their mother tongue, something which I love. Steph pointed out the staff don't wear uniforms, something which we both agreed added a homely feel we loved. To the food, after some deliberation I opted for the warm fish terrine and Steph the homemade rillette with gherkins. My terrine was fantastic, the flavour was very well measured and the texture soft. I can't say I have had many fish terrines in my life but this was certainly the best. It came with a crayfish sauce that set it off brilliantly. Stephs rillette was also lovely, but I was happy with my choice :). The rillette was served with a jar of gherkins so you could have as many as you would like or not as it were. For our mains I chose the Lyon Saucisson with puy lentils and Steph had the Fish of the Day which was pike. My dish came to the table in a pot and was served by the waitress, great restaurant theatre. What made this even better was that there were seconds to be had in the pot. As the manager said to us on the way out their food is what great French food is all about, simplicity and great flavour. The sausage and lentils went brilliantly together and the qaulity of the sausage was great. Just one of those dishes that make you go YUMMMM. Stephs pike was equally impressive, so gently cooked the flavour was tremendous. Soft soft fish with a tomato sauce, it worked well. Again simple and delicious. There can't have been many more than five ingredients in either dish but both were so tasty.

I decided to change my thought process and allow myself to have another splurge since this was in a different city, in a different part of Scotland. I'm so glad I did because this was a magical experience I won't be forgetting for a long time. Making a reservation was a bit nerve-racking because I know how a small town like this can book up. Also, the website was being a bit of a pain so I decided to email the restaurant directly. I communicated with David over email a few times and I was impressed with how happy he seemed to be to have us dine in with them. Walking in, the place feels so homey, with a tartan carpet and a lot of wood accents. The tables were cute and beautifully set. We were the first inside, so we were able to choose where we sat, which was a nice touch. Not to worry, the restaurant filled up pretty quickly after that. David was our server but he was also training a new employee. She was shy but just as lovely as David was. And David is quite lovely. So friendly, so knowledgeable. He made us feel so comfortable and gave a lot of fun stories to go with the wine we were drinking. We went with the Land & Sea, with the wine pairing. I'd highly suggest the wine pairing. A lot of unusual wines that are masterly matched to the food being eaten. And this food is so good, you want to be able to have a lovely drink to accompany it. Everything was just fresh and tasted sublime. The potato dish with the Isle of Mull cheddar and truffle oil is the only thing that doesn't come off of the menu and I know why. It's an amazing dish and I could eat it everyday if I had to.

When planning the Oban leg of our Scottish tour, Etive Restaurant came up time and time again as…read moreone of the premier fine dining establishments in the region. The venue is intimate but not stuffy, swathed in a darker blue color palette with tartan-print carpeting and plenty of maps adorning he walls. The cartographic imagery was very much in theme, as Etive has a clear central driving force: it is a love letter to the terroir and sea-equivalent (merroir?) that produces the best Scottish ingredients. The name itself is a reference to Loch Etive, near which where the restaurant's predecessor was located in Argylle prior to its move south to Oban in 2017. The restaurant was commended in the Michelin guide starting in 2018. David, one of the co-owners and resident sommelier, was our waiter and his passion for both his roots and the restaurant program clearly shone through. We started off with some pre-dinner aperitifs, of which there are but two choices: a Gibson martini and a negroni. Both were sensational. The martini told a maritime story by marrying a local gin from the island of Iona, stinging nettle liqueur, and some briny pearl onions. The negroni comprised of local 100-proof gin was rich and well-balanced. We also had a lovely Rioja with dinner (Arzuaga Ribera del Duero Crianza 2018) that was a solid recommendation. Then commenced the tasting portion of the evening which, for me, was the "Land & Sea" experience: Homemade bread with cultured butter - simple but delicious. Not sure what it is about the butter in Europe, but it's so complex and well-salted compared to the stuff back home. Smoked Salmon and Steelhead Trout Tarts - two little savory fish pastries in flaky pate brisée crust, served on a framed topographic map as a plate. Delicate and smoky flavors and pretty presentation. Crab Cornetto - crispy cones stuffed with crab meat and topped with thick trout roe. The crab was sweet and fresh, but the caviar was surprisingly not especially salty and I felt that the bites could use some extra salinity. Atlantic Brill - thin moist fish over a stew of eggplant, tomato, and eggplant. There were nice tangy and rustic flavors here, but this wasn't the most memorable dish. Potato chowder - pureed and whole potatoes in an impossibly decadent dish with funky Isle of Mull cheddar, truffle oil, and finely chopped chives. Like a classic baked potato on steroids, in the best way. Venison Loin and Haunch - the lamb was just perfectly cooked, one of the best iterations I've had. The deer - served two-ways as both a juicy steak and shredded meat - was paired with earthy and vegetal elements in the form of broccoli puree, foraged chanterelle mushrooms, and crunchy leek. The tangy and full-bodied sauce underneath was wonderful as well. Oban 14-year-old Whisky Ice Cream - tasted just like single-malt whisky, which was just fine for me. The wood and sea spray notes came through, as well as some nuttiness from the toasted oats. I do think it could've done with a little more of the heather honey to give it a tad more sweetness, as it is a dessert after all. Bramble Souffle - an excellent finish that married tart blackberry with sweet, aromatic English tea in the form of a gooey warm little cake with a creamy scoop of Earl Grey ice cream. We absolutely loved our experience here, not only for the delicious food but to witness the respect the team has for Scotland's natural bounty. How many restaurants makes the effort to list the specific lake, village, or island of origin for every major ingredient? Run don't walk here if you are looking for a memorable meal in Oban.
