Now "Mi" soul is in tact…read more I groaned when the waitress brought my platter much sooner than expected. It was almost a painful groan as I instinctively grabbed my phone and snapped the picture you see below. Sssshhh. It is very quite in this little stand (I use "stand" as a term of respect), and there are only muffled spanish-speaking voices as backdrop allowing you to study the menu. Get tacos. Do not experiment. They are proud of them and you don't ask a plumber to do your electrical work. Need we belabor this point? Don't sit down too fast. Check the chilled salsa and salad bar just to your right. It has onions, cilantro, pickled onions, tomatillos, tamatoes, and around 4 various sauces including the green tomatillo (which could be confused with miracle science). Remember the rule. REAL taco stands like this are so proud of their meats alone that they NEED NOT include a chilled veggie bar (that just makes it a wilder and more passionate experience). Taco 1 (Marinated Pork). Call your nearest friends and neighbors for this one. Better yet, call your Priest as this will get you emotional and in need of someone sensitive to resolve your feelings about it. It's essence drips into the recently-pulled-from-the-oil corn tortilla and creates something magical. Taco 2 (Carne Asada). Shredded and delectable little slivers wrap the pickled onions and make the cold regular onions room temp in a warm embrace. Taco 3 (Chorizo). Like Liotta said in Goodfellas, "Fuuuuhgett about it." Note: Authentic tacos do not have cheese. Facts are hard. No cheese lovers allowed. You should only come here if you want to test your Mexican cuisine acumen.

They have a salsa bar as well as many fresh pastries. We had the quesabirria taco special and a chicken quesadilla. No pastries today because we were so full, but next time! We almost thought they were closed, but business seems to come in waves. Service was very quick, especially for there to only be one person working. Highly recommend stopping by to patronize this local business.

Oh my! I've eaten at a lot of Mexican restaurants around the countr, but Cafe Azul stands on the…read moretop of my list! I had Taquitos, which were made with the most flavorful and tender chicken I've ever had in a taquito. They were well presented with a drizzle of cheese sauce, on a bed of pico de gallo, a dollop of sour cream, and shredded greens. My son had one of their burritos, every bit as good. We had to try the desserts, so he had the fried ice crea, and I had the tres leches cake. Again, it was presented beautifull, and the flavor was perfect. We will definitely go back again. Worth every calorie!

Thought all of the stuff hanging from the ceiling would be dusty and musty smell but nope. It was clean and smelled incredible!¡ We live in hour away, and will make the drive back. Sincronizada Quesadillas The chicken was so tender and full of flavor. So simple but done well!!! The Mexican rice was perfect and the salad was the first thing I ate. Pescado - PHENOMENAL 10/10 Grilled Mahi Mahi, grilled shrimp, spinach and mushrooms over the most perfect mashed potatoes of all things. Topped with a cream sauce, pickled purple cabbage with just the right crunch and the edible flour made it almost too pretty to eat. The chips were served hot, the salsa and queso were great too. Will Definitely make the drive back!

There are many lovely options in the Black Mountain area for good meals. The comfort of tasty Latin American food draws us back! The food is so good, and the staff have always been quick to serve and relaxed/friendly. But my favorite experience is to sit outside at a table by the creek, sharing spicy food, a cold beer, and loving conversation with the natural water feature. Olé!!

This town and the adjoining town of Swannanoa was hit terribly by the hurricane in Sept 2024. They are really trying to get some tourist to come back . They need it. When you get off the exit go left and check out the adorable little town. Lots of boutiques and from what I can tell. This town has lots of little art stores and shops and really nice people. Come dinner time, we found this place. The menu was large and the staff very accommodating. The food was delicious. My husband and I have zero complaints about our food or experience. This was the first place I've ever been that served warm bean dip with your chips. It was delicious. I can't wait to go back. Go visit Black Mountain and show support by shopping and eating there. Take a drive up the mountain too. I'm already planning big to go back !

Great Road Trip Stop on the Way Back to Charlotte…read more After an epic day exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains, I found myself rolling through Shelby on the scenic route back to Charlotte. Traffic through town was moving slower than expected thanks to the endless stoplights, but in this case, it worked out in my favor because Papa's & Beer appeared on my right just as my stomach started demanding attention. The restaurant itself is bright, colorful, and festive. The dining room is filled with vibrant Mexican décor, colorful tile accents, booths and tables, and plenty of personality. They had a FIFA soccer match on the TVs, which was fun to watch while I ate. The volume was low, captions were on, and it added energy to the room without becoming distracting. One thing worth mentioning: it was pretty warm inside during my visit. There were fans running throughout the restaurant, but the air conditioning seemed to be struggling. It wasn't unbearable, but on a hot North Carolina afternoon, a cooler dining room would have made the experience more comfortable. The menu is huge. Tacos, quesadillas, seafood, combination plates, house specialties--you could visit several times and still have plenty left to try. I settled on the Carne Asada Combination, which came with grilled steak, Mexican rice, refried beans, salad, and a cheese enchilada. Before my meal arrived, my server brought complimentary chips and a warm bean dip that was downright addictive. One of the highlights was discovering their salsa bar. Nobody mentioned it to me, but curiosity paid off when I saw other guests gathered around it. The selection was excellent, with everything from tomatillo salsa and creamy sauces to chile de árbol varieties that brought some serious heat. As someone who loves spicy food, I was in heaven. My only criticism was that the salsa bar temperature seemed off. One container had a large chunk of ice floating in it, and a few of the salsas were colder than they should have been, which diluted the flavor a bit. The entrée arrived quickly. Portions were generous, and there was no way I was finishing it all after attacking the chips, bean dip, and salsa bar. The standout was the cheese enchilada. Loaded with melted cheese and packed with flavor, it was easily my favorite part of the plate. The carne asada was also generously portioned and cooked well. The rice was the weakest link for me. It needed seasoning and lacked the rich tomato flavor I expect from Mexican rice. The salad was also overdressed, although mixing some of it with the rice actually improved both. One small annoyance: I requested a side of white onions and later discovered there was a $1.50 charge. Not the end of the world, but I would have appreciated a heads-up before it was added to the bill. Service was friendly and efficient throughout, and when I left with a very full takeout box, the cashier happily provided a bag for the road. If you're passing through Shelby, stuck in traffic, or heading back from the mountains, this is a solid place to pull over, grab a cold beer, enjoy some chips and salsa, and recharge before the drive home. Life is too short to eat mediocre food. Keep exploring and find the places that surprise you.
