"I'm crazy for trying and crazy for crying
And I'm crazy for loving you"
(Willie Nelson)
Crazy Hot Deals takes the dollar store philosophy to the sixth power. What I mean is the exact same product can have a different price on six different days.
The store is closed on Thursday when new stock is loaded in. Then on Friday, everything in the store (big, small, and miniscule) is $10. Whatever didn't sell on Friday becomes $8 on Saturday, then $6 on Sunday, all the way down to $1 on Monday. That's pretty interesting, right?
The store is a large open industrial space. There are no shelves or racks, just scores of wooden bins on wheels. Each bin contains the goods - open boxes, half open boxes, ripped open boxes, sealed plastic bags, ripped open plastic bags, and loose items. Nothing is neatly displayed, it looks like someone backed up a truck and dumped everything out.
We went on a Friday so it was $10 day. And what did we see for sale for $10? Lots of Halloween and Christmas products (masks, costumes, ornaments), lots of sealed plastic bags with totally unidentifiable stuff inside, inexplicably lots of wigs and loveseat covers, doggie diapers, toys, hats, party novelties like plastic sunglasses, and a huge box of keychains.
I also saw a box of broken dishes and a lovely pack of shower curtain hooks with dead bugs inside.
What was frustrating was the packaging of so many items rendered their identity to be an absolute mystery.
The bins were so messy and disheveled that shopping there seemed little more than dumpster diving. There was absolutely nothing in the store I would pay $10 for. Nor $8, nor $6, nor $4. For $2 or $1 -yes I might have. But the gamble here is that something you'd buy at a lower price might not still be there on a lower priced day.
One funny note - at 1:00 there was an announcement that new stock was coming in, and about 30 people raced over to the back right corner of the store to check out the new goods.
You know that song by the Who with the lyrics "meet the new boss, same as the old boss"? Well the new stock sure looked a lot like the old stock, except the boxes and bags hadn't been clawed open yet.
I doubt I'll be back. Well maybe I will on $2 or $1 day! read more
