We stopped at Crawpappy's while we were in Alma. Not one single regret! We started with boudin balls. They were crispy on the outside and moist and delicious on the inside. I had the Sue Special which was blackened catfish over rice and smothered in etoufee. It was delicious! My husband had popcorn shrimp and fries. He enjoyed them. The foot was great, but what was even better than the food was the staff. They took excellent care of us and were so friendly! The owner came by to check on us. Again, another super nice person. Crawpappy's Cajun Cuisine in Alma was so good! We started with the boudin eggrolls, and they were amazing - super flavorful and perfectly crispy. Then we had the blackened salmon and it was cooked beautifully with great seasoning. The red beans and rice were delicious and tasted like true Cajun comfort food. Ok this place is a diamond in the rough!! The menu has plenty of options for you to choose from. I personally recommend the fresh fried cracklings. The only thing I would complain about is I ordered a Sue special which is étouffée and fried shrimp The étouffée is really good but the shrimp very clearly came from a bag. Service was friendly and helpful for us being first-timers. The ambiance is divey, but in a nice way. Not gross or dirty. They lean hard into the Louisiana-cajun style. It's fun. Highly recommended. Oyster shells litter the parking lot at CrawPappy's Cajun Cuisine, giving it an authentic Louisiana feel. Outstanding hospitality, like none I have ever experienced, overwhelmingly warm, friendly, welcoming, and phenomenal Cajun food! Pick a table and you will be quickly greeted and asked two questions, "What would you like to drink?" and "Have you ever been here before?" The first question will get you a cold beer and a "No" response to the second question will get you a sampling of the chef's skill. Three little sample cups, one each of Red Beans and Rice, Etouffee and Gumbo. You will immediately realize that you came to the right place. But now you have to pick. One or all. A table next to us yelled out "it is all good!" I responded "but what do you recommend?" A reply came without hesitation, "Sue Special!" Sue special it was, Blackened Catfish with the spicy Etouffee. Add an order of Boudin Balls. The Boudin Balls OMG, crispy crunchy on the outside and a flavor like they had been fried in bacon fat. The Blackened Catfish under the rich Etouffee was done right. My wife went with a small bowl of perfect Gumbo. Everything was as I described in the beginning of this review, phenomenal. The service was superb. As we were walking out, the owner came out of the kitchen, greeted us, thanked us for coming in and invited us back on our next trip through. Cool Louisiana Cajun themed décor, with a big swamp gator stretched out on one wall, bright art on another, scenes reminiscent of NOLA, and a little Mardi Gras purple and gold with the iconic Fleur-de-lis. Some of the best Cajun food that I have had anywhere! And yes, oyster shells scattered in the parking lot gravel for authenticity. Got me wondering though. We were delighted to experience the wonderful food at Crawpappy's. I enjoyed a Boil and my partner had Blackened Salmon. Passing through town, Crawpappy's was highly recommended by the few locals we spoke with and they were spot on. What a great find!!! Tracking home from vacay and found this hole in the wall spot!! Totally missed the photo opp for the crab cakes and alligator tail. The crab cakes were top notch, could be the best I've ever had!! Gator tail was stop on good also. Gumbo, Étouffée, blackened catfish and shrimp, Cajun pasta, Haystack, and a hot dog.... In celebration of our awesome Supreme Court I came up here to see what's up. It's some down home cajun cooking over here. Homemade food they way restaurants should cook. Pork skins are fried up to order and they are awesome. Gumbo and Etouffee are rich and flavorful. Shrimp came out hot with a crunchy batter. Bread pudding soaked in rum. This is the real deal. I had originally headed out this AM for breakfast at Grandma's in Winslow (always a 5 star for me). We arrived to a barren parking lot, and the usual stunning view. Grandma's is celebrating their (her) 50tb wedding anniversary. Congratulations to them. I had to shuffle and redirect. We chose a second location. I got distracted on my phone and realized too late the driver went the wrong direction. Now, I had to select a 3rd choice. Well, '...all things work together for good..." and I found Crawpuppys's Cajun. They don't need my review. Everyone already knows how wonderful they are. They are. Very. So I will make a few observations based on my personal dietary needs. Nearly all of their delectable dishes incorporate Nightshades. (Pout) I tried ONE of their 'sidewinder' fries and it was near perfection. I ordered it with simple salt. The cracklin's (fried pork rinds) were fresh, light, and noisy when they reached the table. Next time (there WILL be one/many) I will order it with (only) the simple salt. I also ordered the fried crawfish tails with a side of fried okra, and one fillet of fried catfish. (I SO very much miss ROTC and their renowned and as yet unparalleled fried catfish.) These items were also excellent, except next time I will ask for no seasoning (beyond sat). Our server was also five stars . She was prompt, pleasant, and patient (as I discussed my dietary needs). She was responsive (to my needs). And attentive without being doting. We ran across this little gem via yelp and thought we would give it a shot. We are SO GLAD WE DID! We were greeted, seated, and had a waitress right away. Our waitress was full of jokes and personality! She brought all 6 of us samples of the etouffe and gumbo without us even asking. She guided us through the menu and everything we had was delicious! Super good cajun interpretations on the outskirts of Alma. Good menu selection of actual cajun food and lots of fried seafood options. Strong on the roux's that are legit. Catfish dishes start with large, thick catfish filets which are better than most of the "catfish houses" in the area. Full bar also (unusual for the area). It's not a large place but has good interior seating with a nice covered outside area. Old house looking but clean, well staffed and friendly. Roast beef poboy came out like beef stew (includes carrots). If you order "dressed" it comes out with a special sauce that has horseradish sauce. Shrimp poboy was night lightly battered like a traditional Cajun shrimp poboy. I only got poboys on my visit. So, anyone Cajun that is looking for Cajun food; this is my take on the poboys. They do use real French bread, but it was very fresh on the day I ate there (bread was soft and absorbed all the juices). Found this great spot on a road trip- so so good! We had our dog with us so we couldn't eat inside but they brought our food out to us at a picnic table out front and made sure we had cutlery, napkins, and refills. We were in Alma from out of town doing some shopping and checked Yelp to see what was noteworthy as a lunch option---I am so glad we checked to find this place! I had the blackened catfish on top of rice with etouffee, and my husband had the same dish with fried catfish. We couldn't resist taking home leftovers, so we ordered a shrimp and cheesy grits on the side. The grits are what will be served in heaven. They were incredible!
